Fair enough, but in the real world on a country road the wrx is going no where.

And in fact i would like to see some on track lap times as i had a wrx running 265 and i think even that would not be leaving my mates clio197 who's only mod is an induction kit, and all that does is make it sound better.

60-100 - Clio 11.8, Impreza WRX 10.2
0-100 - Clio 18.7, Impreza 15.7

Interestingly, both have exactly the same bhp/ton

The Civic type r didnt match the figs either, but did better than the Renault.

I had a Clio 16V, the Williams' little brother. I loved that car, decatted it was pretty quick for what it was. Handled well also, but as Nick says, high speed was a little.......hairy! I would have another.

Ok so the wrx has it in the stats by a fair margin, but i am still a little sceptical about how that translates into the real world on a country lane having driven both.

I agree, the figs on paper discount driver skill, the car itself etc.

It didn't start like that though did it, we just said a standard wrx would be going nowhere on a country road in the real world.

Well the figures show it is quicker, so either the people you were racing didn't know they were in a race or they just can't drive.

in your defence though Ditchmyster, I did read your post as talking about the newage. Dont know if I was right?
Just checked and i was talking newage wrx at 215 bhp, but a classic at 240 that makes it about evens with a very slight advantage to the wrx, and i know for a fact that your going to need some extra horses to be leaving the 197 on a country road.

But he's not talking about racing, he owned both.

I have owned a newage wrx at 265 bhp now have impreza type r running 303, was at 320 when i left my mate in his 197, and iv'e driven the 197 he can drive it faster though as its his car, and i'll say it again.

You will not leave one that is being driven by someone that knows how to drive it, and you will be on the wragged edge to keep up if he is in front on a country road........... capishe

Ive a cupped 182 as my daily whip and well driven theres little to keep up with one on a b road. Even with 400bhp in my impreza and a well setup chassis i know there are corners local to me i can take as quick if not quicker in the Clio.

Kept up with Caymans and Z4Ms through the lanes on a number of occasions now.

If you wan a real giggle, get a 172/182. They spank the 197 all day long and are an absolute riot to drive.

Evo listed it as their all time "Giant Slayer!". I think those guys know what theyre on about too.

I'm on about racing not a country road, i'd strugle to keep up with a three wheeler on a country road, to worried bout those chuffing 4x4's coming the other way.

Tiresome at best i found my 172. Would rather drive the wife's Fab VRS every day of the week. Never again will i own a car which you have to rev the knackers off to get it to do anything

Just felt soooooooooo flat to me but i went form a 313/300 Scoob to an Elise to the Clio so it was probably always gonna feel flat with that history. I'm a person who's is deffo programmed for turbo power not cam power

Bit of a thread revival here, Came across a 197 earlier wanting to play, kept up quite well in the twisty bits, but overall he was no match. Not even close.

*On a private road, up to 70mph etc

Still can't shake my eldest, his 197 against my 400/400 classic.

But then, he takes risks I won't

It's all down to how far the driver is willing to push.........IMHO

I think your in need of some driver training my type r with 320 went away from my mates 197 at a respectable pace, and he said he just could not get close and was wringing it's neck

But there is bugger all traffic out here so no worries about getting stuck behind something and letting him catch up, over about a 10 mile run once i hit 3rd i didn't see him till we got to the bar, but we are talking twisty roads
