Ye want to try tax a car here in Ireland!!!
Just put 3 months on the impreza, 172 euro for 3 months!!! And cost 77 euro to fill it with petrol yesterday!!!!
I love tax!!! I really do!!!!! (sarcasm is great)

Didn't realise we had to buy a car based on what they majority buys. If that's your logic, Ford have sold the most in the UK last month so you'd better go and trade yours in for one. Maybe you could even join the Honda boards and tell them your Ford is better.

Why is the Honda so expensive to tax compared to a bigger, better performing, premium brand, far bigger saloon in the form of the BMW 520D ? Seems pointless scrimping and buying a budget, inferior brand to be hit with such expensive tax?

The BMW 520d looks pretty good ..... but, 37mpg isn't quite up there with the Honda's 55mpg.

I would want the Touring - if they do one. Also, the BMW has limited cubby storage and the steering wheel rim is unnaturally thick. What’s more, there’s nowhere to put the key – and as you need to plip the fob to get in (the car has keyless start, but not entry), this is irritating. Another gripe is revealed as you try to pull away, because the electronic handbrake doesn’t release automatically, like most rival systems

The BMW's run-flat tyres are an absolute turn-off ... as is the fact that it is £10,000 - yes!! £10,000 MORE than the Honda for less equipment!!! That's not worth the Road Tax saving - is it?

That is opinion they are like arseholes and everyone has them. Most of us feel driving something economical,ugly and boring isn't worth it and for the people that work hard for their money they want something they love for their money. Cars aren't just about transport.

If road tax or VED is based on the amount of CO2 produced why not bill car owners once a year after the MOT on the difference in the speedo readings to get a mileage for that year and then some factor to take into account the greeness of the engine? Sounds fair to me.

My £425 VED 2.5 WRX only does 4500 miles per year so I would hopefully see a saving?

Also I think there should be some ability to offset your CO2 emmisions by planting trees or producing wind or solar power or recycling or cycling to work etc etc.

Lets face it its just another unfair tax.

Trouble with taking the CO2 from the MOT is that quite a few cars have no CAT so would be absolutely nailed!!

Other than that, what about rogue MOT stations?

I see you only quoted the lower figure of 37 in the case of the BMWs extra urban fuel consumption. In case you missed it, the higher figure is 55.4 , so it is more economical than the Honda too.

Hard to believe that a huge 5 seat, 184bhp premium saloon provides better fuel consumption than your small Honda hatchback.
You are absolutely right about diesel being the fuel of the future, Pete.
It would appear times have moved on from when you bought the Honda, as the BMW 520D clearly demonstrates.

If you're talking irritating...

Why have a key to turn AND a push starter? What a waste of time. One or the other surely?

If you're senile (like most Honda owners), why does it let you engage the push starter when you are in gear? Most rival systems don't.

It also lets you engage the push starter when the engine is running. Most rival systems don't.

Why does it have to beep to tell you to put your seat belt on before you've even started the engine? Most rivals don't.

The car is almost as irritating as you.

Like I said, the BMW seems like a capable car .... it matches the Honda in many respects - but, is it worth £10,000 more than the Honda??

2.2 diesel isn't it Pete?.....that would be £115 for 6 months then, since Honda discontinued that very engine because it would not meet the class' emissions figures......standard for a 2.2 oil burner is about £210 or so....i know since my freelander 2 runs one....

The Honda has a great many cubby holes, vital for storage. If you p1ssed in a bag like Pete you would value that too, also for his many pill boxes to keep the madness at bay (FAIL). Thing is in truth i doubt VERY MUCH if Pete ever owned an Impreza, since why would someone with his views buy one?....Also a lot of the old farts on here are convinced he never owned an Impreza due to a total lack of pics of the car.....

still, Pete is a troll, convinced he is an elitest, and as long as people like Les reply to him he will not go away.

I agree with the fact that some people would get round it and it would probably be impossible to police such a tax, but there must be something better?

Pete's not really old. He is allegedly early 40's.

If he is 73 as he says, why would he have bought a classic 10 years ago because of the whole WRX thing?

There aren't many people approaching their 70's who want to drive that sort of car, especially ones a few years later who chuck it in for a diesel conform-a-mobile on the basis of a quiet interior and cheap cost?

Like a lot of people he probably got to about 30, had a bit of spare cash, bought his 'dream car' and now (10 years on) has grown up and is driving a 'sensible car'....and probably now views his earlier self as a bit of an embarrassment!

And I bought a Honda diesel, because, and this is fact - it's a much better car for me than the new STi ... considering I am a Subaru man, that should worry Subaru UK somewhat.

Anyway - this is about Car Tax and the outrage which is an increase of £5 to £115!!

Rotton day at work followed by a demand for £260 tax for my 1.8 7 tear old two seater AND insurance rip off lot have put my insurance up by 50% AGAIN!!!!!

Whatever the insurers bleat on about claims putting other policies up i take with a pinch of salt

As to road tax gets right up my nose

Seriously getting near to not being able to afford to drive my car and sell the kids just so the government is ok

One day, when you have had a bit more experience, you may come to realise that your insulting comments, which are pretty ineffective and childish as it happens, actually weaken any attempt of an argument that you might imagine that you have.

Just in passing,it is difficult to work out why you should be so obsessive when it comes to the end of a post.

Isn't that just a complicated way of achieving the same as adding x pence onto a litre of fuel. No factor required, after all CO2 out is proportional to petrol in.

Think of the hassle when you sell a car mid year and have to declare the mileage and pay your emissions bill. What about hire cars?

The offset would occur automatically as an effect of this scheme. Cycle = drive less = less petrol = less tax.
