Devil's work for the dare I say it youthful masses.
Acronyms such as lol are acceptable as they are just the shortening of words due to laziness. Actually on the net and the net only this is seen as acceptable as it is saving bandwidth by posting fewer characters into your forum/website/whatever
But full sentences of 100% text speak is encouraging illiteracy imo and the perpetrators should be shot on site

Think people know my views on 'txt spk' because it was my comments on the stupid dump valve thread to the original poster which helped create this debate. There is a difference between a genuine learning difficulty and blatantly writing in a deformed alpha-numerical form of the queens English. My little brother is dyslexic and doesn't write in text speak, indeed he makes the best effort he can with what writing skills he does have. I help him with things like letters and CVs and he helps me with PC issues as he's q natural whizz on them.
My point was (and I was reacting to) the fact some people actually glorify or try and defend deliberate text speak. My feeling is that the person writing in text speak asking for help is almost arrogant, because you have to do twice as much to help them, ie decipher what the **** they've said and then help them. Sorry but I'm not prepared to do that especially when the forum dictates quite clearly text speak isn't to be used.
I'd like to hear the opinions of th OP on the dump valve thread with regards to text speak...

Personally I can't stand it, if someone can't be ar$ed to sit down and write a message in coherant English then I can't be ar$ed to sit down and decipher what it is they are actually 'trying' to say.
As for Dyslexia it seems to me there are more and more people who are leaving school each year who simply just can't spell and use this as an excuse which is an insult to the genuine sufferers of Dyslexia.

Why can the mods just not update the forum with a spell checker, then each post will get checked andonly 'allowed' abbreviations of words can be allowed such as LOL, IMO etc.....On the other hand if you cant be bothered to decipher the message if it is in text speak then it is the origional poster who loses out, is it not? as they lose the wealth of knowledge. Therefore i fail to understand why people get so upset over this?
Incidently i thought text speak was becoming less and less popular due to modern mobile phones which have full qwerty keyboards, therefore not requiring multiple uses of the same button to make a word.
I am glad though that abbreviations are not subject to this rant, how ever being a newbie on here it is difficult to sometimes understand the terminology of some of the more seasoned members. BOV, FMIC, TMIC, (dont worry i got these eventually). Maybe there should be a sticky with common abbreviations of car parts?

Abbreviations are fine, but one that does annoy me is over use of PMSL. Especially when someone uses it when something is not even funny. LOL is fine, but probably gets used far too much. When typing it, how many people do actually laugh out loud? I suppose it's used to show that you're are speaking in jest or not being serious. Can't stand text speak though, you just know the person using it has their trousers tucked into their socks and wears a stupid hat. OK they're not all like that, but you know they are doing it to try and be cool and that annoys me.
Saying that I have a VTA on the Impreza along with a NUR Spec R and don't see them as "chavvy". I put them on because I like them, not because I thought other people would.
FULL CAPS TYPING IS ANOTHER THING THAT I HATE. Find it hard to read quickly.

I agree that txt spk is a pain in the backside
I am not sure how the auto correction software works but I would think that 'popular' Acronyms like LOL, IMHO and the above could be accommodated.

As for the reasons for 'txt' speak, it's use because a single SMS message is limited to 160 characters ( ... http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/tech...messaging.html ... ) so words became 'abbreviated' so people could fit in their missives in one go. The use of QWERTY keyboards doesn't change the fundamental 160 character limit.
As for people using it, they should be shot! If your text message needs shortening to less than 160 characters then PICK UP THE BLEDDY PHONE!

the 160 character limit was for when you were charged 12p for every text message. you made every one of the 160 letters count. in this day and age of free text bundles there is absolutely no need to shorten text messages at all. people use text messages like instant messenger now. they play text ping pong with their friends some times just saying "OK" in reply to a question.

There are times when I am at work when I receive a text, which I only see when on my break (we're not allowed to carry phones during our shift). So by the time I see it, the sender isn't always available for a 'chat', hence it is more sensible just to reply via text message, then they will have an answer as soon as they see their phone.
As for characters, I will not use text speak (as said earlier) so if I run over the limit, so be it, it'll cost me 10p instead of 5p. If I was even able to phone that person, the likelihood that phone call would cost more than 10p, as once you are speaking people often have a habit of saying more than is required. It's not so bad on contracts, with free minutes, but I am on PAYG, and I have to watch my pennies.
(add to that, sometimes I just don't want to speak to someone personally
)
