Text speak - a good thing or the devil's work?

Following on from the end of this thread in General:

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...lve-sound.html

Is text speak now socially acceptable or is it still considered a lazy form of communication?

A poster in that thread claims it is now used in various education and training establishments as an accepted form of written communication. If that is true (and I so hope it isn't) it is a sad day for the English language in my opinion.

Then again I am probably just old fashioned so what do people think? It is interesting to note that the SN terms and conditions ban the use of text speak. Is that a good thing or not?

Over to you.

Oh and the first person who replies in text speak gets a bloody nose ;) :D :D

Terminator X 03 May 2011 12:00 AM

It's an age thing ... I can't stand it which I guess makes me old! Lazy IMHO & is not English & never should be.

TX.

scooby-tc 03 May 2011 12:03 AM

it's socially unacceptable and lazy in the same way as dyslexia is in people being too lazy to learn to read and write from an early age IMO :D

Lisawrx 03 May 2011 12:05 AM

Woz jst about to.... oh fcuk it :lol1:

I was just about to post a thread myself, but you have beaten me to it.

(It took more effort to attempt to put that into text speak, than just writing properly...I must be getting old )

I think it is the work of the Devil, but to get in early, I don't think people should be so readily criticised for spelling mistakes etc. Not everyone is perfect, but I think to use text speak on an open forum is simply lazy.

Genuine dyslexia is not laziness, but I am guessing you know that given the :D at the end of your post... however just for others reading the thread I thought it best to make that clear.

So is 'IMHO' and 'LOL' not text chat then ??

I can't give a lady a bloody nose ;) :D

Agree on the spelling issue even though I will have a dig at people's spelling if they are trying to be a smart ar5e .... :o

LEUVEN 03 May 2011 12:14 AM

Not only is it lazy, but it's unnecessary too.
Gone are the days (or should be as it isn't 1995) of old phones, limited text sizes and number pads to write messages on. :thumb:

Lee247 03 May 2011 12:14 AM

I detest it. :thumb:
My kids are 17 and 20 and they don't use it, so..........................who does :D

As Lisa said earlier the terms and conditons of the site allow for some abbreviations, but not for fuill on text speak.

Outside of the forum rules I would broadly agree with that as, for instance, asap was a widely accepted abbreviation before text messages even existed.

Technically yes, but I would say the use of the odd abbreviation isn't the end of the world. That is very different to whole sentences/posts made up of largely illegible clap trap. :thumb: (provided of course that they are not overused either)

I dont do text speak as i dont know what the hell half of it means,it was before my time but as you point out ive had to google some of the abbreviations on here to see what they mean as even the kids dont know :confused:anyway back to the dv debate its more fun :D

MattyB1983 03 May 2011 12:24 AM

I didn't know what 'LOL' meant until a few months ago. My wife is into that Facebook crap and I noticed she wrote 'LOL' in one of her posts while she was showing me some pictures. I'm 27 and I'm not even up to speed

Not true. Even on my current phone, I am restricted to a set amount of characters per message. However, I will not resort to text speak (and the people I text probably wouldn't have a clue what I meant), so I have to just suffer the extra cost of being a gobsh1te. :lol1:

In fact, I may have had to ask.

LOL :nono:

Don't even get me going on 'facebook'. There's not enough hours in the day for that sh*te.. Before we had our daughter she would spend hours and hours on it, going through people's pictures and poking people. (poking people, what the Fu*k !!!!).
It's the status messages that really used to boil my pi*s, some of the crap was just pathetic, 'amy is now going to bed', who gives a Fu*k !!!

Sorry, off topic but that Facebook not only boils my pi*s but my blood too.

And this is where the issue gets blurry as you might use text speak because you have a genuine problem with writing.

As I said in the other thread maybe I am picking on the wrong thing as it isn't text speak per se that annoys me, but the people who use it because they are too lazy to write properly.

Obviously that doesn't apply in your case and maybe text speak is actually a bonus to you so that is an interesting perspective on it.

Have you ever written SIAL on another forum and then had a very difficult post trying to explain what you meant .. :o

MattyB1983 03 May 2011 01:07 AM

I think somebody should post a list up of all the different abbreviations and the meanings of each.
I really haven't got a clue about most of them, been sat here trying to figure out what 'SIAL' could possibly mean. I'm lost.
