It's fairly logical that bird numbers would go up if one of their principle predators was removed from the environment.

Just to qualify this story, the house is five years old, the trees are starting to rule the landscape...
We had nothing alive in these gardens for some three years. But Last year we had, a heron ( bast'd ate my smaller Koi and carp ), robins and blue ****.

This year we've added magpies, jays, blacbirds and some large thrushes, "she" thought they were woodpeckers

And now young 'uns... one is now asleep in it's box in the kitchen, dog seems bemused by it all !

P.S. Cats aren't welcome here

I know as much as you do mate. That said, I agree with what you say that bird numbers would increase if one of their principle predators was removed. You've not however proved that domestic cats are the culprit. Indeed, your source suggests that farmers using intensive farming techniques are the key culprit.

I reckon the cats are off the hook (for now)

Responsible cat owners like myself put a bell on the collar, means they have less chance of getting the birds

We even have endangered bullfinches (both male and female) visit our garden despite having 3 cats.

Yes, it just couldnt fly, not good having budgies at the same time though coming home to find their water bath on the floor and only one of two budgies and one happy magpie sitting on top of the cage though luckily the other budgie had fallen down the back of a large wall unit and into a draw
Use to sort of squark/talk and could be a right cheeky thing given the chance!

In fact, nature is counter-intuitive. Often, if fewer adults survive the summer months into the winter, there is far less competition for meagre food resources and there is no mass starvation with its resultant population crash. There is often a population explosion in the following spring.

If we were to shoot all the magpies and crows, then the numbers of other birds would rocket.

Magpies are really evil creatures as they search out other birds nests and eat either the eggs, or the chicks.

No name needed... gone !

Got up just as dawn broke, tipped box onto shed roof.

Left some bread/milk/meal-worm, and waited.

A short while later a parent appeared and off they went.

dunx

P.S. It must be a male, it just sat on the fence all day waiting to be fed

P.P.S. It will be the Magpies that are the next problem.

I am merely the temporary occupant of this space, and when I die nature will continue it's fight to control our numbers...

Mrs Leslie says chopped up worms or grubs and maggotts fed with a pair of tweezers.

The cat would follow its inbred instincts and kill it if it gets the chance.

We would certainly follow yoiur example and try to save it.

The RSPB don't agree with you.

http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/garden...ddeclines.aspx

Whilst cats do kill many birds, the evidence seems to suggest they kill the weak/ill/old birds, and this makes little or no difference to the overall bird population, in fact it may help as only strong and healthy birds survive to breed.

Well done to the OP for helping out, experience has taught me to leave nature to take it's course, as I've yet to have any success rescuing injured birds. Still that didn't stop me driving 150 miles, to take a House martin chick that had fallen out of the nest, to a bird sanctuary.

It didn't need help, except in avoiding being eaten by one of the local cats...

LoL

dunx

P.S. Came back to the same spot on the fence today, but is at least flying around a bit.
