1/4 mile run
5 speed cross the line in 4
6 speed you need 5 just towards the line.
how many have owned newage wrx/sti.
not saying either are bad just both have different advantages but as standard are very similar in performance

This is the problem, all those who think the 5 speed is better just cant drive a 6 speed car, the 6 speed keeps the engine on the boil ALL of the time, the 5 speed doesnt.
I will give you an example.
Car 1, 260bhp MY00 uk turbo.
Car 2, 340bhp BMW M3 SMG (E46)
Car 2 puts foot down and off it goes from xxmph
car 1 cant change down gear from 4th to keep up as doing so means hitting 6.5k (totally useless in a uk turbo) or going to 5th (all out of puff), 4th is too long so cant catch said E46 M3.
(yes it did happen, and yes I was in the UK turbo)
Car 1, JDM Spec C MY03
Country roads, need to change gear for corners..... nil
go into corner, put foot down on exit and off it goes, nicely in the power band
25mph in town in 5th gear, put foot down and off it goes, comes to traffic lights, 5th to neutral.
Leaves traffic lights, goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd and if clear up to 5th, missing 4th out or even better, 1st, 2nd, little bit more power, 5th, sorted

Now if you want a quick 5 speed box, try an STI type R or RA, very close to the 6 speed box without a 6th gear

Yup agree with you there, they have different advantages, though the 6 speed has more advantages over the 5 have a look at what someone has posted about the 6 speed boxes, quite interesting but the gearing in 1st and 2nd are quite similar, 3-6 are closer giving better accelleration and performance due to keeping the engine in the power band better (plus shorter throw etc).

I owned a uk my03 wrx ended up at ppp spec approx 260bhp. Great car no regrets, I test drove the car I now own a my05 jdm sti and it didn't feel a lot quicker felt more solid and responsive on the road, but when you drive it on roads you know and keep an eye on the speedo you then realise how much quicker it is. Also I find the six speed box superb can always get the car on the powerband but I still say they are both good cars just different. But the sti is not just about off the line, it out performs the wrx in many ways, ok you can throw money at a wrx to get near sti performance but it still ain't an sti and ends up costing more than buying the sti in the beginning, the wrx with a few performance, handling and braking mods is very good, but to answer the question my sti would defo wipe the floor with my old wrx but I still like both of them,

same as a classic feeling more aggressive different cars models give different driver feed back but back in the real driving world of of the car going from a to b island to island there really is not that much in them all.
