Yep, shall be doing an interim oil change on ours too.

Russell, think of all that extra money you are saving towards the oil by only putting 95 RON in......

Quite right.

Fuel costs me nothing, so I will use Super from now on anyway.

I was under the impression it was less critical with the 7 than, say, with the P1, which I always run on 97 + booster for obvious reasons.

I shan't listen to my Dealer anymore. Should have known better anyway. They thought the I/C waterspray worked by itself. Didn't have the heart to tell them the dash light was flashing because the tank was empty !

Got mine on Thursday and done close on 600 miles now. A quick trip back to Scoobymania next Friday and I will be well over the 1000 miles. Don't know where I would be without that red light and the buzzer at 4000 revs. Its soooo very tempting.

Just remember that the 4K limit stays in place until after the 1000 mile service. Be that service at 900,1000, or 1100 miles+

It's the combination of mileage and swapping the thin running in oil out that frees us of the bondage of the 4K limit, not just miles alone.

Incidentally, if I recall Euro WRX's don't have the 1000 mile service. Does the Euro STI?

Not sure about the Euro STI but I am going to get Scoobmania to do it anyway which will probably be bang on 1000 miles.

Quote from Diesel:
The best way to bed in a 4 stroke piston engine is to use good oil, and to minimise mechanical drag. This equates to revving it. The higher an engine revs, the shorter the time a non-smooth mechanical part gets to be in touch with another mechanical part. This way an engine runs in quicker and better.
But surley Diesel, whilst that makes sense, that will create a lot more heat and heat is the enemy of a new engine. Isn't one of the reasons for running in is that the metal has to expend and contract and when new, if too much of this goes on, damage can result?

Quote from Neil Smalley
I'm told, that for motorbikes the way to run them in, is as diesel says. BUT the engines don't tend to last very long. I guess it depends on how long you keep the car for, and how clear you want your concience to be on selling it on(I.e flog it knowing that you've not run it in properly).
Neil, firstly, that's not how motorbikes are supposed to be run in (well according to the manual and people in the industry that I know). For example, my bike manual says something like keep it to 4000rpm for the 1st 100 miles and don't run the engine for more than an hour. Keep it to 5000rpm for the next 500 miles and the running in Service is then at 600 miles. After that, don't run up to the redline @ 11,500rpm for more than a couple of seconds until 1000 miles and then it's fun time Now I've followed this procedure and have a fast, well running bike which requires not a single drop of oil between it's (single ) annual service. It's now three years old. When it had it's recent 3rd year service, I was chatting with the mechanic and he said that they (my model of bike) usually drink quite a bit of oil but he agreed with me that that was probably down to people not running them in properly.

I've always thought (and I think that my experience has shown me) that running in properly will produce a car which is probably not quite as quick/loose but will run reliably for a long time with no problems.

Matt

P.S. My bike gets thrashed within an inch of it's life EVERY time it goes out, sees the redline extremely frequently and is often held somewhere near to the redline, normally at least once a ride for more than a couple of seconds....

Cheers matt.

I was told that by a bike mechanic who used to work on Race bikes. So it figures that he would'nt mind rebuilding his engine a few times in order to get a faster bike..

It'll be interesting to see if the STIs follow the pattern of earlier Scoobs. I've found with my MY01 that in the last few thousand miles (now around 14K) it has loosened up a lot. The car feels a lot quicker. When I go the car (with 800 miles on the clock) it was very tight and gradually freed up, but I was surprised at how different it feels now. It is certainly more noticable than it was on my old MY00 which I ran from new for 42K miles.

Moral of this story could be: Don't buy a car from Danny Fisher

Cheers
Chris

Must say I completetly made up what I posted regarding running in being a nonsense - sorry! Rioja power!

Mind you I just don’t really get the logic or black art of it all and was hoping to be thrown out the window with that posting. Didn't happen (yet) though.

Instinct tells me not to take an STi on a trackday straight off the boat - but all these specific rev limits and all that??? If a crank bearing is at it’s new and tight end of tolerance, and needs to shave metal off the touching surfaces to sit comfortably, then this has to and will happen whether you are going uphill in 5th or sideways in 2nd!

D,

That's the point of oil, the surfaces do not touch and if they do, that's one big bill for a new engine please

I think the main point of running in is to (gently) get the metal used to expanding and contracting....

Well in that case Matt, the cooling fan should always be on, and you should run a thicker antifreeze mixture with those 'icy white' bits in it - like the chewing gum

I remain unconvinced! So cynical yet so young (errr, ish)!
