SUSPENDED FROM WORK
With shoplifters you can definitely tell the professionals from the genuine customer who has just forgotten to pay.
With the staff the thing was no one thought they were guilty, it was almost like a perk of the job! So when they were quizzed about it they would say 'But I wasn't stealing, it was just a pack of sweets', they looked innocent because in their eyes they were IYKWIM.
The really guilty ones were the lads who were getting their mates to drive up to the loading bay....or the overnight shift who were getting rid of the evidence (all the empty bottles and wrappers hid in the suspended ceiling in the staff-room)....or the checkout women stuffing cash in their bras. We had managers sacked for theft too even after they had sacked other members of staff

That beggars belief. I assumed they would be honest.Saying that, I could be tempted with a packet of Maltesers (joke)
If it's the one I'm thinking of she forgot to pay for some make-up.

From: If you're not braking or accelerating you're wasting time.
Right, now we're getting down to the nitty gritty:How many people have taken something from work,no matter how small, even a pen?
Would we all be in the same boat?
My opinion is that it's not the 'stealing' of the food that's the problem,
it's eating on the shop floor, which I think is very unprofessional.
This should only require a brief word in the ear for a first offence.
Good old British common sense..............it's not in any HR handbook,it's not in any Terms & Conditions,it's not in any Health & Safety manual. That's because it dosn't allow
jumped up little tw*ts to exercise any sense of power.

Fair point, i get some good results from "a few words in the ear" when i'm walking the floor....normally those words are "do some feking work" ... gets good results

LOL at this thread
A man goes to the doctors
"What's the problem?" asks the doctor.
"Well" says the guy, its my **** doctor it's orange!!"
"I better have a look" says the doctor.
There it was bright orange, "blimey I've never seen anything like it" says the doctor.
"What kind of work do you do," asks the doctor.
"I don't work," replies the guy.
"What no work of any kind," asks the doctor.
"No nothing," replies the guy.
"What do you do all day," asks the doctor.
"I sit a home watching **** and eating Wotsits."

She could appeal the decision and she will have another with a different manager or such. At my work, if you are dismissed and you appeal, you have the appeal hearing with the area manager.
I personally only know of one case where the original decision has been overruled, but that doesn't really matter here.
I suppose she has nothing to lose by doing that, but I hope she has some good defence set up ready for it/the other hearing officer takes pity or gives the benefit of the doubt.

I'd move on & put it all behind you. If you feel you have a case though why not go to tribunal ... doesn't cost much & will put the wind up em. If she was there <12mnths though (can't remember what original post said) then there's no point as companies can get shot of anyone for virtually anything if so.

Waste of time, like all retail jobs they will have probably had a regional legal team check it over before sacking her, or have done it before and set a president.....I'm affraid that was only going to end one way

From: It's like finding a cocktail sausage, when what you really wanted was a rather large saveloy.
So the lady in question was still on company time when she consumed goods which she hadnt paid for? TBH, I am not surprised she has been fired!
Unless she was on a official break, she should not have been eating anyway - and to do it on the shop floor!! But to make matters worse, it was goods from the store which she hadnt even paid for?!!
For a quick snack before clocking off, she has lost her job, and if she applies for future jobs which need a reference, Poundstretchers are within their rights to say why she was fired from the role, although they may refuse to comment on a reference request, which still doesnt look good for her! Not many people would want to employ someone who has been fired for theft from their employers.
