Don't worry about the crank, AFAIK all Impreza cranks can take big power. Andy Forrest was using a standard 2.5 crank in his big power classic. The Impreza crank is very strong.

They are not STI 8's that would have been a 2002 car and no that wouldnt have been twin scroll (hence you dont use sti v xxx anymore as its too confusing), twin scroll units came in with the blob eye's (they would have been STI 9's if the numbering was kept up )

As mine is a Spec C engine would it have anything above and beyond a normal JDM STI 9 or were the differences elsewhere on the car.
Also, have just been flicking through the history and apparently the bottom end was fitted as a 'new' unit back in 2005. Happy days as the car has only covered 20'ish K since then ..

Sorry for jumping in on your thread as well buddy..

Dont think there is any other differences from the normal sti 9 short block wise but heads may have had different cams. Correct most of the changes where elsewhere on the car.

Excellent news should have plenty of miles of trouble free motoring

The 2004 engine will have the hyperutectic pistons and a crossed drilled nitrided crank

im buying a 29000 mile jdm sti 8 short block(2004) which is being stripped and checked etc, then my v4 sti type r (98) heads are going to be completely overhauled and fitted to the block.....new gaskets, seals etc etc.
i will be running stansard vf 24 with oe downpipe and no mods apart from the fact it will be mapped using an apexi power fc.

I guess the big question is what are you going to do with the 7/8 year old internals, if it's going to be taken apart then I guess you will be looking replacing some of the moving parts while the engine is in bits out of the car

Now you see why they stopped doing versions?
The domestic market had versions, the UK market didnt have STI's (neither did any other market), when back in 2002 they pushed out the car to other markets there were differences in these variations (turbo's, maps, ecu's, engines etc), to call them all version 7/8/9 etc would confuse due to you wanting a version 9 engine (which was a twin scroll unit from a 2003 car) or someone thinking it was the 2ltr unit from a 2005 uk car (2 totally different engines).

The best way to look at it (and the only way to see what jdm car would have been what version) is to follow the wrc, you will see the S7 (2001 rally car), the S8, (2002) the S9 (2003) or the S6 (2000)
Your engine is from a 2004 JDM STI, its as simple as that (and blobs would have started on version 9 if they continued using versions that is )
Just stick to model years and markets, less hassle

IF they continued using versions then it was a 2003 car, but as people call version 9 anything from 2003-2006 you just dont know
