Many years ago I drove the road version of the ur-Quattro and was driven in the Quattro Sport (short wheelbase). Those cars were extremely good performers in pure acceleration and speed figures and were nothing but homologation specials which were needed to be made eligible for road use. There always have been and will be people who will want rough, unrefined and explosive performance from their cars and not much else. By today;s standards this is all not even academic as Audi would make today's equivalent to those cars as good as their competitors would or are. The fact remains they are no longer doing such things and the old RS2 was the last product that resembed that approach.

Both the long wheelbase Ur-Quattro and the short wheelbase Quattro Sport have had the 5-cyl, 20V turbocharged engine.

Once again, you cannot compare ANYTHING between these cars and the Impreza we all use today. Chalk and cheese is as close as it gets. Also, 10-15 years ago different methods were applied to reach the same goals as are aspired towards with cars of today.

How it handled? Viciously nervous and nowhere near as easy to keep fast and steady as any of the today's road version of the respective homologation specials. Crude, rough, unrefined - but so many members of this board like these characteristics. Oh, yes. it was really easy to be the 'fastest round the block'

Some Audi 4 hatchbacky nonsense thing tried to be clever with my Subaru today.
Left it for dead in 6th (mine that is).

Not a racing story really.

But tbf I didn't give you the facts:

Dual carriageway, I'm behind him/her.
They can't get away from roundabouts as quick as me but I'm not that bothered (even though I'm driving 160 miles home). The limit drops to 50, we both slow down, they pull into the inside lane, I slow down a tad slower and overtake.
I know the road and a mile or so further NSL will come back, where of course I'll be able to open the car up more quickly and so properly leave them behind.
Mr/Mrs Grade 1 Plank sees the NSL signs 400 yards away and decides to undertake me.
Well, try to. It's surprising how much pull there is, even in 6th at 55mph (and although that is technically speeding in a 50 zone, for legal purposes it isn't). My reason for the few mph more is that it's at revs that make the turbo almost fully spooled.

The clown tried to make a race of it but a nice roundabout 300 yds up the road (and Subaru getaway from it) stopped any more nonsense.
Well, it didn't. ***** thought they were carving me up 500 yds down the road when they launched into an overtaking manoeuvre, pulled back in suddenly - and realised that I'd got off at the sliproad. They might in fairness have seen me indicating through their red mist.

Not right for a 13 Reg Audi to be overtaken by a T-reg Subaru is it?

I don't need to race (took 6 months to learn that mind, and stories on here did help).
