I would nt mind paying any road tax amount if my money that i pay towards having my car on british roads goes to maintaining the roads i drive on i m sick to death of driving along roads and playing dodge the pot hole i feel for people like yourselves who have there scoobys on the road(mines just track) and are running the risk of bending £1000's of pounds worth of alloy wheels!
The tax brackets are defined by the make, model, engine of the car. The database is of course for UK cars. So any import does not link to anything on the database and so I think it goes under a 'general' classification. So if you import a 700cc car you'd probably be pi$$ed off at the tax. However if you get an American 7.0ltr muscle car you will probably be laughing your ar$e off
I think that's pretty much how it works.

yes my jdm my05 has 0 g/km stated on log book was imported dec 05. I believe some where imported and had the uk car co2 on logbook so pay as per uk car so later 06 cars will be in the high bracket, but I have noticed a few hatches for sale on piston heads still with plg road tax so may still be a loophole present just need to know what it is
And, back on planet sensible, I'm being asked to pay £110 a year
It really is financial suicide to buy and run a Scooby these days, those who have them cannot sell them so have to hold ..... it's a sad state of affairs.

Mines correctly registered as well. I have all the vosa and first registration documents here. Car was imported in early 2006 and registered last year. Tax is PLG class and is £215 per year!
TX
It was stored and then provisionally sold. The buyer paid a deposit but never paid the rest and kept making excuses. It was then stored again and I then bought it when API decided to put it back on the Market.

Up until last year, the Tax band was based on UK registration date, however this time last year that was changed to the first date of registration when originaly registered new, in it's country of origin. So an MY05 that was registered in the UK in 07 used to be the highest band, but it's now based on it's original Japan registered date of 05. This is why a lot of Imports had their tax drop last year.
^^ I have to laugh or I'd cry ... I had this very same arguement with the DVLA / Govt when my Spec C (54 plate, reg'd in 2008 though) was being hammered for tax. Needless to say I got nowhere at the time
Why did they alter it?
TX.
Why did they alter it?TX.
The initial hike in duty rates was done as part of a retrospective tax change in the budget, which they had to reverse due to a backlash from a large number of ordinary car drivers who also got hammered. When they dropped all these cars out of the new higher bands and went back to the previous banding, for some reason they chose to now use the original date of car registration when new as the date point. The previous labour government cocked it all up basically..

And 'WhatCar' states:- "you could get a lot more for your money elsewhere. The 1 Series isn’t particularly practical, either, and some of the cabin plastics are disappointing" Sounds a lot like a Scooby HatchBack?
BMW at £20,415 ... and the Cruise Control is extra, the Folding Mirrors are extra, No Dual Climate Control, MP3 Player CD extra, No USB Port, Rain Sensing Wipers extra, No Auto. Headlights .... so, in a nutshell, LESS for MORE Cost!! Yeah!! Really wise move!!

AND the BMW is slower .... a massive FAIL then.
That would be the 118d Sport then?

Didn't buy it to be practical - its a second car.
Car has auto lights and wipers and folding mirros. Don't use CDs anymore - I have an iPod (look it up on google if your not sure what one that is) Anyway, it was a demonstrator so didn't cost anything like £20k.
So its not less for more. Wrong again. The BMW is much cheaper to tax, fuel and service (5 yrs or 50k miles for £250
) and would leave a civic for dead on any A road.Oh, and it has a rear wiper - as standard.

p.s. I'm sure you've not forgotten the engine in your car is so good they can't sell it anymore.
