iPad: The Microwave Oven of Computing
Well, I have an iphone, ipad and imac, so wrap me up in a parcel and call me a fanboy all you like............
The Ipad is a great little toy, it sits in the corner of the living room and displays nice family photos, if i need to check something on the internet, it is done in seconds.
It only really leaves the house when going on holiday and it is a perfect dvd player for the kids as well as the multitude of kids games I have on it.
I have a pc and an imac in the office, neither is a complete replacement for the other.
I have a multitude of Laptops as well as the Ipad, neither is a complete replacement for the other.
I have an iphone, which does replace any other phones that I have.
The Ipad is a nice little addition, it looks good, it' small and it's instant, was it expensive at £700, yes, but i wouldn't have bought it if I couldn't afford it.

Apple haters = far more passionate and obsessive than apple fans, its almost comical!
If you dont like the product or dont get it then dont buy one. End of.
Sure its a toy, so is my RC helicopter and all the other stuff I've accumulated over the years but its a great toy and I want one.

Mate, if they make a watch that will control my tv, I'm sold!
I'm not an Apple hater honest.
I just do not 'get' some of their tech, especially the I-Pad.
But may be that's the point. It doesn't have a specific purpose. It's a toy.

A version of Office, or just Word or Excel from MS, no, it does not have that (not sure wether a "yet" is appropriate, no idea if MS is working on one), however, that does not mean you cannot view and edit excel and word docs on the iPad. There is an app called Documents To Go, which allows view / create /edit of Word, Excel ad PowerPoint files on iPad and iPhone.
Oh, and if you just want to view a word document, then you don't need anything other than the ability to get the document onto, or viewable by the iPad, eg; use Dropbox. iOS supports read-only viewing of word files. Handy if you don't need to edit a doc, just view it, but I know that isn't what most would want to do, they'd want edit capabilities.
Branching off for a moment. If the iPad could not edit MS office documents, then is that really Apple's fault. It's not their productivity application so they have no control over document formats and such like.

). It was a genuine question as like it or not in the business world Excel and Word docs are the de facto standard. Personally I hate Word iwth a passion, but you have to be able to use it. If the iPad has apps that can read and write basic Excel and Word then that is a good thing.
I had one of these over 20 years ago while at college, they still sell them!

(Just incase you couldn't tell!)
Wow
All the apple haters have joined together on one thread
Never mind jack will beround later to sort you all out
iPad is a fantastic product and I've only used the laptop one since I got the ipad for my birthday last October
Infact I use it 5 hours a day mostly for surfing the web
So easy just pick it up switch it on and instant access
All my contacts and files are on it
I've got 2500 photos on it ,50 apps and loads of videos too
Just like my iPhone except iPads easier to read with my eyes
Laptops are so much nineties
iPad is the future
Who wants a big heavy laptop balanced on your knee
iPad is so much easier
Just wish I had a phone on it then it would be Perfect

I like the Microwave article. I think in a few years time tablet devices will be in most homes. I don't see what I would use them for yet though. Older tablets were very niche and didn't set off any trends, but Apples marketing and fanboy base has made them popular. Since then many developers have got on board and with Android joining iOS on such devices, then there are many more options. As developers create new ways to fully utilise tablets, people will see that they can be used for more then just browsing the net. They are still a little limited for the money to warrent me buying one. Android for instance, has problems with low latency audio so is crap for any kind of music app (may have been resolved in Honeycomb, but not read up on it yet). Apple really put me off without having anykind of standard interfaces, removable storage and the need for iTunes.
it all depends on your job really, My m8 whos a real technology hater, never buys anything he struggled at buying a Flat TV, and he earns 100k a year and has no mortgage
So many years ago i sat in his house id say about 15years ago and i said in time Pubs will close Internet social networks will come and gadgets will be a must in the house. All my m8s laughed and we cont to get wankered.
we all went out last week for a curry, and half of my Builder m8s who hate tech had Iphones, My m8 now has Iphone and Ipad, he actually said although he gets email on his Iphone from work, the Ipad has made it a lot easier to reply in the VAN than on a Iphone, If any of you know what i mean, I thought the phone was great , big screen fast and a good phone IPAD much better , now when i go back to my phone it seems hard work.
but im in IT so i use it as a tablet for meetings referancing Books on technology for the job im doing and so forth.
I do agree with some of you if your a Joiner or manual worker it got less use, apart from reading the sun and watchin **** at break time.
But again on Holiday its been great better than DVD player, my daughetr who is just coming to 3 has used it daily for Dora the explorer and Go Giego and can at 35 months old count to 6 in spanish, ( a dora thing )
I still think the Mac books are **** though, if i had 1 id flatten it and get windows on it, although that new 1 looks pimp

Excellent article. I don't have a microwave and I don't have an iPad.
Fingers crossed I've saved enough pennies to sort out my iPad issue next month, I have easily enough work for it now, my Macbook is brilliant but an iPad will do the job much better.
I doubt I'll ever buy a microwave, the last time I used one it killed the grass.

Apple also were not sure what people would make of the ipad when it first launched and we are now finding ipad is a platform and its the apps and the ease of use that make it so appealing. Schools are buying them as easy teaching devices, business are looking at adopting them for point of sale devices, data collection for medical applications and so much much more. People re starting to get custom apps written and the market is now finally seeing what apps and the ipad platform can do for business.
The main thing is its easy to use , more so than a pc and lighter.
We've sold thousands of them in 2 days.

Any school buying an Ipad needs to get a grip. Peoples irrational love of IPads will probably make them come up with a variety of interesting uses for them which is not a bad thing. Using them in a state school is clearly mental though.
I was on a call with the States the other day discussing a possible 50million pound deal,
The client turns over 100 billion, the product i do is Microsoft orientated, and at one point in the call it was Pivoting on if IPADs were supported as this cust had ****loads.
Its a big thing to be honest lots using em in Business,

I just booted a service provider who couldn't support iPads and iPhones, saying that they couldn't do Mac's well enough either.
Stick your head in the sand if you like, Apple are showing Microsoft users the future right now.
