I've always been told to hold the revs at max torque level (3.5k?) just below the biting point when you wanna go release the clutch an off you go rather quickly

I've done 32 launches in my Ra at pod on a standard clutch with no problems with 1.1 bar boost on a TD05 16g launching at 6000rpm with a 60ft of 1.733 1/4mile 12.7 @ 104mph

No good on a turbocharged car IMO, as holding the revs at 3.5k with a steady throttle the turbo is barely doing anything and won't provide much torque until it spins up. So it'll bog down unless you slip the clutch a lot.

Full throttle blips to hold 3.5k will get the turbo spinning more so when you do lift the clutch, there will be more boost a lot sooner.

Without the LC holding steady revs on launch is no best idea as Ali-B said, with LC boost will build nicely

Here is our best run on the Santa pod

Holding steady revs is pointless without slipping the clutch.

Rev and rev it hard and then pull up the clutch with a bit of slip. The engine will be loaded so won't bog down and you'll be off!

Or use launch control which may actually launch the car too hard, and spin up the wheels.

Here's how I do it:

Rapid Full throttle blips to maintain the desired launch revs. RPM will depend on the turbo and 1st gear ratio. A UK TD04 with cats will be happy at 4K RPM. a TD05 or larger will need more revs.

Quickly bring clutch up to its bite point (you should already know where this is from driving in stop-start traffic ).

Hold the pedal just above that biting point for about the same time it takes to say 'elephant' aloud whilst giving the engine more throttle. Then bring the clutch up the rest of the way whilst flooring the throttle.

PS, I should get a launch vid up on youtube as there is alot of vids on there that don't seem to be able to launch properly.. and they change gear like a granny

I wonder if I can borrow my old Impreza back (still on the original clutch)

Thanks for this post, a lot to think about but my 3rd attempted I nailed it, with a video to show. On my friends closed bit of tarmac.

enjoy...

Don't have any incar footage, but, video of one of my races at SSO.

Give it death and dump the clutch seems to work for me, no ALS or Lunch Control.

Launch was OK on this one too;

Beat SteveBT over the line too.

Instuctions.

1) Give it about 5.5k revs
2) Dump clutch and hang on for dear life

THEN
(if you have a strong clutch and not so strong transmission)
3) Get out of car, walk backwards about 100 yards, picking bits of your gearbox up as you go!
4) Call APi and ask for a gearbox rebuild!

No idea... I don't think it's that fast.

There's a guy on here with a very high spec Legacy and he rips through the gears like it's a semi sequential box

Have a look at this one!

High spec Legacy (9.88 sec 1/4 mile)

And my Impreza wagon that I hill climb.

Launch will be different depending on tarmac, gradient etc so don't think there is a set formula. It will depend on how you feel your car goes best on the day.

I launched my car 3 times with the dccd on the first green arrow, according to torque app 0-60 was below 4 seconds each time. Tried it on auto and the reocrded time was 7 seconds

I doubt torque app is accurate though.

Default 0-100 times

I have tried a few methods. From dumping the clutch to trying to balance loading the car while releasing clutch!
it seemed much easier to launch when I had a smaller turbo! Even with a 20G trying to get enough boost for a decent launch is a struggle!

I struggle to get below 4.5seconds with a 20G on a Classic. I was hoping for sub 4 seconds! I have no idea how subaru claims a stock STI is just as fast!!

Curious what 0-100Kmh (0-60) time people are getting and with what hp.

Good thread. What sort of 0-60 and 0-100 times do people get, just interested. Spec would be great too.

Very sensible advice, Always worth loading it up in gear to the biting point on the clutch...apply handbrake to take the load, This will take some stress out on the drivetrain

Here's my old wagon with ESL Launch Control, FlatShift, Traction Control and ALS. It had a failed HG as you can see but still ran 11.5 @ 126mph on a stock location turbo. A 1.6sec 60ft on 215 section tyres

Datalog indicated 0-60 in 2.9 and 0-100 in 7.5. You can sort of confirm it on a stopwatch with the video, 60mph is the top of second gear and 100mph is close to the 4th-5th shift.

Did you know the HG was knackered before doing the run? There's no way I'd be completing the run if I saw water/steam pissing out like that

Why not? It was full of water to start with

I kept filling it up and going out but the misfire got worse. Cossie HGs and RCMS studs later and she's good as new.
