How many Subarus are there out there in the world driving around? Most of them use the generic OE filter made for Subaru by whomever, that we are discussing here
There would be a huge epidemic of failed Subarus out there if the filter is as bad as you guys are making out. My local dealership has 6000 customers, many of whom have cars with that filter fitted. That part number is the same one for a Nissan Micra, there's more of them out there than Subarus. Usually the Japanese Subarus domestically use " Micro " brand filters, that as far as l know are made in Japan. Top quality stuff.
You may not like the way it looks, but better informed, brighter, Fuji Heavy tecchies are
happy with the spec. and it is not giving them trouble - WORLDWIDE.
Don't talk yourselves into a frenzy about something that doesn't need fixing.

So what ?
The sump holds 4.5 litres [ ish ] it travels around the engine at 9 gallons a minute. That is the pump speed. The modified pumps just pump higher pressure. Until you get to the later cars that use a 12mm pump to increase volume to support twin Avics the volume up 'til then will always be the same.
The filter is there to catch debris, there should be no more debris in a high power engine than a low power engine. Unless it is falling to bits. Most high power cars treated correctly would have an oil and filter change more regularly than a 9000 interval road car.
Why put a magnetic sump plug in either the sump or the filter? Most of the moving parts that wear in a Subaru engine are alloy [ non magnetic ] Once there are steel or iron magnetic particles in the oil the engine is F*cked - you don't need a magnet at that point, you need a pile of money.
Don't waste it on a magnet that won't help you......

Intresting read David. One thing i will say is if people actually listen to you they will learn something. Ive always found the magnetic sump plugs amusing myself as like you say if it does its job and catches anything your engine is screwed anyway.

Thanks, I have been doing this a while and my training at Ford was comprehensive, as was my competition career working with the Ford rally teams. Some stuff is deep back in the grey matter, but training and comprehension just need a moment or two to recall

The twenty quid or so magnetic plugs being sold right here are just a con then?

From: The hell where youth and laughter go
When the filter split - it was a tiny 2" long hairline crack...Yet that was enough to spray out 3 litres of oil in the space of 30seconds of driving @ approx 2500 rpm!
Oh well, saved me having to rust proof the chassis

I havnt read every post on this thread either but one thing i do know it what holes that the filters have isnt important as long as the flow rates are matched, different brands arrive at the same flow rate in different ways but as long as they do match the flow the holes are irellavent as long as 1. the filter filters as it should and 2. the flow is matched to spec.
Oh one thing ive noticed though people seem to think just cos its pink it is superior. I mean WTF

No not a con, they do attract magnetic particles, so they work. BUT in an engine they are of little use.

Someone sent me this quote I rather like it.
"I'd like to remind us all that for the most part, internet forums are where people that dont know how do do something, tell other people that
dont know how to do something, what they read about how to do it."

Unfortunately when it comes to cars, Bad advice doesn't just stop with the internet, even on these forums I've read many times about guys having an issue then taking their car to various garages and being told 'yeah mate, knackered top end & it'll cost you thousands' & they then happen upon a specialist who takes a look and finds spark plug etc. is loose and all it then costs them is 30 minutes of time.
The internet is a handy tool, but unless you fully research and then understand what your looking at it's next to useless and can make things worse.

Your crankshaft, piston rings, little end pins, oil pump rotors and drives, camshafts, cam followers and the various types of roller bearings are all made of alloy? I guess your cylinder bores are too? Are you sure?
Once there are steel or iron magnetic particles in the oil the engine is F*cked - you don't need a magnet at that point, you need a pile of money.
In fact, why doesn't the engine just last forever?
Perhaps BAE weapons division, or the Army. They have both bought a tad under 5000 from me between them this year alone. Idiots these modern aircraft and land based weapons designers aren't they?

If there are no ferrous particles in your oil, what wears it out David?
The black stuff in the oil is carbon - quite hard that and non magnetic..........

You are a good [ very good ] salesman and they haven't thought it through.
Didn't I read something about MOD wasting money in the papers??

Correct. So assuming this carbon, which you suggest is harder than steel, wears away the metal it is in contact with, where do the worn off metal particles go if they are not in the oil?
