well, due to lack of source, ive just ordered a genuine subaru Blue one.

K&n dont make one for the classic
The local motor factors only use blueprint ones at £3 a pop, they are tiny
was going to use a champion one from halfords, none in stock

so,genuine one it is (£10.97 delivered)

David,i hope my lump dont come a knocking LOL ( i do all the **** things to keep it running sweet as well LOL,much to my missus disgust, can we leave yet,no,letting it warm up biatch)

Hi,

forgive me for asking but where and who says the Subaru filter is made by Fram.

I am not saying it is or isnt just I dont know for sure, I have a filter in my hand which says, "manufactured for Subaru of America" on the side, followed by "Honeywell made in Canada", they come in box's of 12, written on the box is "genuine parts, factory original " and the Subaru logo, these are supplied to us by Roger Clark Motor Sport and also from our main dealers.

We run them on all our race cars with no issue at 600 + BHP.

cheers

I for one will be listening to the wise words of folk like David @ APi and the Clinic rather than SN myth/some chap from the US with a video camera.

When they change their mind and use something else, so will I. Until then, I'll stick with Subaru OE.

i would just like to say that i fitted my first one of these blue ones a couple of months ago and the first thing i noticed was the holes in the top of it where bigger but not as many as what were on the old black ones, also the bigger holes on the blue ones where rough when you rub your finger over them and the black ones were smothe , ps my bottom end let go three weeks ago as well and im now running in my new bottom end on one of these filters but this is what the garage fit and use then this is what it gets as they put the warrenty on it and if dave and the gather think there ok then thats all good with me

As David has said there has been no problems with these filters. End off.
If there were it would have been common knowledge by now.

My incendent, on a previous engine, to one I have now. Could have been the ring, but perhaps it was more likely to have been wrong fitment.

You are forgiven.

Honeywell own Fram, amongst a lot of other subsidaries including Garret turbos.

Slightly off topic but a lot of OEM oil filters are not as good as the filters that they manufacture for the vehicle manufacturers.

The company that I work for had an independent company analyse all of the main spurious filters available (including the OEM manufacturers offerings) and found in all tests that the filtration and flow rates were not as good.

One oil filter was not even half the recommended rates from one manufacturer, it was quite frankly dangerous to use. When this filter was split and analysed the paper quality was pathetic, you may as well have used a nappy to filter the oil.

I always use genuine filters and wouldn't even consider using anything else.

HKS Hybrid are very good, £4 more than subaru oem but much better quality. They even have a magnet in bottom.
Mann filters also seem to be very good and fairly cheap.

I can tell you of two filters that have failed lately both blue, my car was on the rollers a month ago and even tho it had just had a new filter and o ring put on it... it started leaking and threw oil out

Stew at TFS Racing had his HKS drag car on the rollers and it spat oil out and caught fire, lucky we spotted it straight away

You should have seen Simons face when Stews caught fire... we were all waving like mad and picking up the fire extinguishers and he was just sitting there smiling as he didnt have a clue

As with mine, we didnt even know it had been leaking till the car came off the rollers and Charlie noticed the oil

MY scoob's just had it's oil change and OEM filter, but am i worried no

Why

1) if i do get an oil related engine failure i'll know where to look first, and past two years I've not seen a single problem & with a pressure gauge fitted i'll notice early on if bits of paper!! start building up in the oil feed lines

2) If there as crap as people make out then I'd expect to see millions of people globally bitching that their engines have blown up and independent examinations woudl highlight the filter

3) Been servicing and modding mine/others cars for past 30 years and yes
used Fram air/oil filters and never seen one explode

4) What you wont hear, especially in cases of oil filter casing failures was it then fitted incorrectly by a Tool who over torqued it etc.

5) Like any part for anything there maybe some that were dispatched into the public after a manufacturing failure, this can happen anything to anything we buy

+ you also need to be aware even buying aftermarket such as K&N is it K&N and not some cheap Chinese copy!!! while living and working out in the middle east saw many fake items ranging from cigarettes to motor parts and all looked just like the genuine item, at least with the Subaru OEM it does fail you can go back to them & then make enough noise to get fixed FOC.

This is turning in to a major can of worms. It is very unlikely we will have consensus on this subject. My point was/is the poor build quality of the OEM filter, although it may be 'fit for purpose'.

The other factor to bear in mind is we take our cars beyond the parameters that Subaru intended. This includes modifying and subjecting to hard use (ie track/rolling road). To this end I think it is prudent to uprate the oil filter as you would other parts on the car.

indeed, i certainly wont be paying £10-£15 for one from the stealers. If it was £5 then you mind, but £15 for a bit of cardboard is a ripoff

Well, on startup and until engine warm my pressure gauge shows 6 bar (87psi) and once warm 3-3.5 bar (43.5-50Psi) on tick over then giving it sum goes to 8 bar (116psi) if these filters were that crap i'd expect that to be lower, but if someone who also has gauge and K&N etc. fitted can post their readings then we'll all know

thing is most rubbish/mis-information starts from yank forums & it's based from what their mates sisters, boyfriend's, cousin down in Louisiana said at some time

No one is saying they dont do the job, but its the point that the quality is now **** and yet they still charge £15 for them

If anybody wants UFI filters I'll get a price for a quantity.
Set me a realistic target for 10 or more & I'll give it a go!

yeah but people are saying this, when i do oil change i do check the old oil for foreign objects but never seen paper etc.

If something is not up to the job then as mentioned, it would be on the forums 'just had oil change & filter blew up etc'

Paper as a filter, it does the job, but pay some more money and better materials like air filters, standard use paper, better is oiled cotton. but to say it's crap as it uses paper is wrong coz some people have posted (or future viewers of this post) are worried about having OEM stuff and could then waste money on getting something else which may/may not be genuine or actually be any better.

I base my information not only on the time i spent playing around with cars but also being an ex military aeronautical engineer, so have a good understanding of use of materials, components and the trade off with costs

This guy who did the youtube, how do we know he doesn't work for some after market filter manufacturer,

We need facts so as mentioned if someone can supply real world data for the other filters & if they do show these filters are rubbish then I will change for 1, but until then I'll stick with OEM.

Cheaper etc. is what drives the fakes market, it's a bargain so must get it, i think that wrong.

Put your handbags down boyz and get back in your prams! There is nothing wrong with the original Subaru filter, At the end of the day you decide wot you put on your wheels, Just don't believe everything you read, I'm a tech and fitted hundreds poss thousands of filters that have changed over the years and not seen any problems, This guy's just throwing you a curve ball, Poking a wasp nest, I agree with the GAFFER and APIDAVID, It's like banging your head against the wall.
P.S Well done RUTT Nice one.

That original video in the OP is useless, and as likely mentioned earlier, here's a recap:

1. drain back valve: not needed on a Impreza

2. He makes zero observation of the thickness or sealing of the filter media (the paper pleated bit)...these can tear or split if too thin. Don't ask me on what is too thin; I've seen torn filters on BMWs, but usually thats due to the way the filter cover has been installed (twisting and ripping the filter).

3. He totally disregards the by-pass valve (not knowing what it is). Thats the bit that opens when the filter media becomes too restrictive to flow enough oil.

4. Finally he's American/Canadian. The genuine Subaru filters over there may be made by a different manufacturer to the genuine Subaru filters supplied to the UK (or the EU).

Because its blue doesn't means its made by the same company. Or indeed if its the same inside as the one in the video as manufacturers change designs all the time.

Fact: Use that filter whilst the car is under warranty will pose no problem; However, use someone else's filter and you may find yourself up the creek with no paddle if the engine did go wrong.
