Big BHP in the golf is not the answer. I have just sold my 2wd cossie running 24psi and with over 4k of engine( a low of 317bhp and 354lb ft) work for a MY99uk wagon and the wagon is the quicker car most of the time in the real and safe world.

Grip, traction, balance, and a feeling of safety are worth loads of bhp.

Still will make a great road terrorist though.

David_h,

Blown golfs can be reliable, especially if you're up for spending the kind of money you have...

Audi 1.8T transplant or G60 and swap the charger for a T3 Garrett and Saab APC... loads of potential

V.interesting comments people.
Re:- the guy with the stripped out Astra
So true, the more you strip out the car, stiffen suspension etc, less suitable it is for the road. On Sunday I was bouncing so much on some of the roads had to back off, meanwhile a bog standard 2litre Primera was just riding the bumps and getting the power down.
Re:- Big power in a golf not the way to go.
Agreed, that's why I'm not taking it any further than 240bhp to 260bhp, that's about the max the chassis will take, and it's also why I'm having a limited slip diff. 300bhp is ridiculous in a Sierra, but explains why all the Ford boys waste VW's on the drag strip.(I'll get shot for saying that as a clubgti member).
Re:- Forced induction can be reliable
Maybe, but I do confess to liking noise. A 1.8T is not an interesting car to drive (it just goes woosh). Gary Handa has done all sorts to his Mk4 turbo and at GTI international last year it broke down. Spec is at least over 350bhp now. Also I thought if you uprated the turbo, it just gave you more power higher up the rev range, hardly useable no? BTW 1.8T conversion costs around £4-5k, that's just stock, then you need to spend another £2k uprating it to exceed 200bhp (chip wont' do that much).
Finally, Re:- Guy who mentioned the Astra with throttle bodies and 2L, 230bhp is probably about right. Have driven a 220bhp G60 Mk2 2wd, fastest car I've ever been in, ever!!! Scarily fast.

Pleased that everyone's so interested in this thread. Don't get me wrong I have ultimate respect for Scooby's on the road (they are dangerous, don't mess with them, is my view), it's just I needed something different to promote my website. In west London I get more stares than a Ferrari, believe me. (sounds bit arrogant sorry).

David-H, what power does your golf run at the moment? Has it been dyno'd? I was the in the GtiR at the meet.

Hi David.

I think i can comment on this one .I own a MY96 scooby(standard, not for long i can guarantee that& Stealth Racing turbocharged mk2 2.0l 16v Golf 225hp/240lb-ft so its pretty quick for old golf. You name it its been done & 5yrs & 15k later. One of the reasons i brought the scooby is better traction it simple as that you can have all that power if you can't put it down forget it.But got say i still love driving my golf It seems have a bit more ,dare i say morefactor.if you know what i mean but it has got leather recaros, lowered on Koni's/eibach & running on 17s & much more. But the scooby slowly growing on me.it just needs a few more mods

Jason.(not quite an ex gti driver yet

No car has not been dyno'd, only rr at 170bhp at flywheel.
Not v.fast at Evo meet cause engine still to be done.
Hadn't actually realised how big my brakes were compared to other performance cars (I didn't upgrade them so thought they were standard), they do work so well though. I'd recommend them.

Guy with turbo charged Mk2, couple of questions
1.)have you an LSD, am assured this can make big difference
2.) Throttle bodies far better than a turbo (just ask race invader off gti (mk1 in orange featured in max power, PVW, golf etc), he can waste almost anything in that machine, also prepared by Grant Motorsport as mine will be. WRX's are wasted by him.
3.) I know what you mean about grin factor with the golf, scooby's just seem to hang on no matter what you do in the corner.

Let the fight begin.....

I assume you will be putting in an ATB, not a plate type ? - I run a quaife and yes, it helps quite a bit in various situations - but don't expect miracles off the line - it won't turn it into a 4x4 beater, not by a long way.

I agree about a high power aspirated car being far 'quicker' than the equivalent tuned turbo - obviously depends on the chassis - but for FWD this is definitely the case.

great noise too

Cool

David

I never got around to fitting a LSD.It probably would have made a difference..But you'll never get the same level grip as 4x4.

I think you come on the wrong forum, your only genner get flamed about your turbo comment, most of us know forced induction means big power & torque you can only dream of on a normally aspirated 4 pot .BTW this ain't a dig at you everybody got there own opinions.. But you just can't beat the rush of a turbo

Goodluck with your new engine, hope it scares a few scooby(In straight line anyway).

Jason.
