Also, if you can get a focus (what have just bought - 2004 1.6 zetec, 75k, £2200) these are also great cars to drive. I am sure you could pic a 2000 plate up for that sort of cash. The 1.6 is surprising brisk too!

Did the sums and I just can't justify the expense of a scoob right now, especially with fuel prices going the way they are right now.
Also, at this money, I wouldn't got for a diesel either, simply because of the cost of putting them right if any work needs doing to the diesel injection system.
Medium sized petrol hatch is the most logical choice for a young family.
And as I said, the focus is also a fantastic handling car.

Criteria is as follows:

1. Budget is £1200 topps
2. Baby friendly (so 4-5 doors if poss)
3. I would like power steering but could live without it
4. Not too old, i.e. early 90s
5. Reliable, not to expensive to run, possibly fun? to drive
6. Insurance friendly

I know most requests like these usually have a bigger budget but this is all I would have
