Andy, I really wouldn't recommned a bmw/jag for that sort of money.
I just sold my 2001 nissan almera for £1000 as it was only 3 door.
Brilliant little car. Didn't have to spend a penny on it in the 12 months that I owned it.
Had 100k on the clock too.
Also, if you can get a focus (what have just bought - 2004 1.6 zetec, 75k, £2200) these are also great cars to drive. I am sure you could pic a 2000 plate up for that sort of cash. The 1.6 is surprising brisk too!

You can get 5 door almeras. Great little cars.

No scoob I'm afraid.
Did the sums and I just can't justify the expense of a scoob right now, especially with fuel prices going the way they are right now.
Also, at this money, I wouldn't got for a diesel either, simply because of the cost of putting them right if any work needs doing to the diesel injection system.
Medium sized petrol hatch is the most logical choice for a young family.
And as I said, the focus is also a fantastic handling car.

So I need some ideas on a replacement and look to your guys for advice.

Criteria is as follows:

1. Budget is £1200 topps
2. Baby friendly (so 4-5 doors if poss)
3. I would like power steering but could live without it
4. Not too old, i.e. early 90s
5. Reliable, not to expensive to run, possibly fun? to drive
6. Insurance friendly

I know most requests like these usually have a bigger budget but this is all I would have

TIA

Andy
Some more sensible suggestions if you don't get the Merc
