They are some lovely wheels you have there Ricky and at a bargin price. I have got some Rays forged recently and was amazed how light they are even compared to the standard Enkies.
Have you decided on tyres?
Im thinking that AP s are the way to go as its what you always come up with when looking at big brake kits. But they do not come up very often for cars with thr 114 pcd, when they do you have to be very quick.

I actually got them for £75 less than the already ridiculously low asking price on ebay!! ...with tyres!!

Still undecided on tyres, either Nankang, Federal or Dmacks? A lot will also be to do with whether I go 235 or 245 section?

Brakes will probably be a set of new 2013 D2 6pot kit. Though AP 6 pots are better but they are almost double the price new as compared to D2's. I dont really want to buy used AP's unless near mint condition, from a known member, at a good price......which aint gona happen!! lol

Old 17" Sti wheels with part used Re070's sold to Sonic. (Also sold off set of new Re070s last week)

Slight change of plan....lovely JDM forged Prodrive wheels, going on Scooby as road/show wheels with used Falken/Maxis tyres they came with. My bronze Rota Torques will have their nearly new Maxxis tyres taken off and put on wife's Honda Accord, which needs new tyres.

The Rota Torques will now be used on track instead of JDM Prodrives GC05. A few reasons, mainly as track wheels they will be abused, bumped, gravel rashed etc and a single Rota wheel can be replaced easily and cheaply. The Rotas are also 8.5 inch wide (Prodrives are 8"), which suits my idea to run 245 width tyres and they are relatively light too. The forged monoblock Gc05's would be a pain in the *** to try fix or find replacement wheel.

They come in 235/40/18 not 245/40/18, what I wanted. But funnily enough their 235 is wider than most other tyres & is almost 245. Pic below shows four 255/40/18 tyres stacked on top of one another on right & US Nitto tyres on left in same size.

About the tyres choices,I wouldn't use Dmack tyres,I think Damien@dbrad killed them in one session on MLR Sprint

AD08 think those are probably best and agree those are expensive tyres,but seems they're best for money

R888 we are run them previously and must admit great tyres like on track or on the road,although noisy

Few months back we are tried AD048 which has been best tyres what we are tried

About the RS-R not sure,friend running them and he prefer them,he said,if he can choose,he will choose Yokohama on daily basis,but for price of the Federal he said,they worth the money

Those RS3 Hankook I've tried to get last year,but for UK or EU they're not available,which is shame in my view

The only real semi slick tyre is R888s and AD048s . Their classed as track work and road legal tyre opposite to nankangs these Feds , re070s , ad08' classed as fast road/ occasional track work tyre... Regardless how good they can feel against the top ones mentioned, the real comparison can be only judged by comparing the lap times IMO.

Mantaz, your right but they are usually compared to R888's & AD048's in testing reviews etc & are a cheaper alternative. Obviously not quite as good but I will have to stick em on & see.

I know what you saying , and my next choice will be nakangs i think as it's a bang for buck alternative... We're not chasing those milli seconds anyway ... But they are what they are....Normally racing tyre doesnt have those little "nipples" like a road tyre...

I did want to go 245 width, but at the expense it seems of losing 45 profile to 40 and not being able to use RE070's on track, which I really liked and got used to. The RE070's (especially at 45 profile) had some pliability and give in them as well as excellent grip. So you can take some liberties with them and also they didn't go off with heat for at least 7 or 8 laps at e.g Donington. The Federals on the other hand do seem to suffer from quicker heat issues on track, from what I have read, albeit with greater grip.

Saying all that I am a tart & do like blinging 18" wheels to ponce about on track!! lol

We compared them to existing 235 Maxis tyre on the car & these RSR are wider, almost a 245 profile, though they say 235.

Brief road driving update to follow.

A limited drive of approx 1hr on A roads, various sized roundabouts and basic average speed driving with tyres not properly scrubbed in yet. Opinion so far as compared to any other road tyres I have tried is.....................Foookin amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But lets get one thing straight first: They are not comfortable, very hard (excess steel reinforced sidewalls), transmit every bump in the road surface.........but in terms of sheer grip, control and feedback they are brilliant, I have not driven a better tyre yet.
On a straight line, no steering input, they feel much more planted, almost sucking the front wheels onto the tarmac. The steering feels heavier and more precise.
The same corners and rounabouts require less steering input to make the same turn, it feels as if the car is almost pulling you around the corner with little steering input. Almost go kart like handling. I am not exaggerating.

This is after morning driving on the Maxxis Maz1 & evening on the Falken 452's. The Maxxis were actually not bad, much preferred them to the Falken 452's which I thought were rubbish. (Though theyr new 453's look like excellent wet weather tyres?)
The Maxxis are not bad for an all weather tyre on a budget, (been using them for over a year) & the Bridgestone RE070s are definitely a good tyre (been using them for several years), not comparable to the Federal RSR's on initial impressions. But time will tell as I use them on track & dry roads.

Going forward, I was so astounded by the levels of grips such track tyres (almost semi slick etc) offer that I will find it hard to go back to normal road tyres, definitely not for spring/summer anyway.

On a side note: The increased track IMO makes a big impact on handling & grip.
The Ver9 widetrack increases the wheel track by 15mm over the Ver8 blob model.

Adding to this I have: gone from an 8" wide Sti rim to an 8.5" Rota rim
Decreased offset (wider) from 53mm to 42mm
Increased tyre width from 225 to 235

All this adds up to a further approx 17mm increase in track width from the already 15mm wider Ver9 widetrack cars. Though these may seem like small numbers, but in reality makes quite a difference to how a car behaves.

Also interestingly the 8" wide Forged monoblock rims combined the lighter road tyres weighed approx 20kg per corner & the 8.5" Rota wheel with heavy Federal 595 RSR track tyre was approx 24kg! I wasnt excepting a 4 kg difference! (The wheel itself is approx 3kg heavier & tyre 1kg.) Would have prefered it if the Prodrive Monoblock wheel was 8.5" wide so I could have maybe stuck the track tyres on that instead.

Horses for courses I guess.
For me, the comparison is what will stand up to track day bashing and is OK on the road and what will fall apart on the track and is OK on the road.
If it is lap times you are after you might as well just buy a set of slicks.

A good way of looking at it, as for me running slicks is not an option on trackdays due to UK's ever changing weather & many trackdays don't allow slicks.

Agree , thought i was referring on the way they were described just as good as a real semi slick tyre. Everyone's aim on track is different and chucking slicks on is just not as simple unless you ready for your engine build.. Semi slicks and smtn fast road tyre , wont generate so much lateral G force , ot even near to the slicks , and that can cause the oil starvation , engine goes waloop on after that one. I was looking at my oil pressure gauge on track day with different tyres, it all was ok on tight and twisty track , but i think it wouldnt be on longer sweeping faster corners.... Baffled sump or even sump plate is a must if you doing track days.... I had the idea of slicks long time ago , as their quite cheap 2nd hand with enough of meat for 2-3 track days , but some knowledgeable people said to stay away...

Forgot to add , it's not only oil , but fuel starvation will be a problem without a swirl pot with the slicks , it's a one slippery slope this one...

Full review of brakes to come as Im still bedding in & not had a chance to drive the car much. Though first impressions are.......stupid mental neck snapping braking power!!!! lol Never experienced anything like it!!

In preparation for track day I still need to the get alignment done next week & Rich also discovered the Apex Hardrace extended ball joints are fooked. Not sure why this has happened so soon after fitting but once they are off we can get a better look. Also one side track rod end is an aftermarket poor quality jobbie that was meant to be a genuine Subaru one, so this will have to go also. Therefore ordered the Super Pro Roll Centre kit which has both items I need:



Today managed to finish off some odd jobs on car:

-Remove my scoop under tray mod that I wasn't happy with
-Remove rear speakers, junk and a bit of weight saving!
-Clean up old Brembo setup ready to put on sale

-Sort out the horrible cut out I made in the engine bay a while back. This was done in order to fit the APS cold air induction kit without the extra bend that normally is how it is fitted. So a bit of Perspex, my trustee angle grinder, etc etc and a neat little fix. Still need a couple of better bolts & might spray it black or grey?
