I got a bonus from the Tax Credit people TWICE. Rang up and said I was working part-time so less pay and they took husband off the system and paid me as single parent. Lump sum of £900 plus £200 a week. Noticed bank balance was looking healthy, so rang them up and they'd made a mistake. Then said they wouldn't pay me anything until the debt was paid off. I was only really entitled to £10 a week, so would have taken foofing ages to pay back. I appealed and said it was their fault, so they then paid me what they should have paid me for over a year and a half.... I then wasn't entitled, so I said for them to stop sending me the reminders. Got on my nerves!
We won't be entitled to child benefit soon either, even though the higher rate tax payer in our house isn't my daughter's father!

Guys, the government do pay your mortgage should you become unemployed.

Up until 30 Sept 2010, the government were paying 6.1% even if the claimant was on an SVR much much lower than this. This meant that for the majority the government were not only paying the interest part of the mortgage but the repayment part too.
They changed this in October to 3.6% due to the budget cuts and with a typical SVR at the moment around 4.5%, many are experiencing a short fall unless they were lucky enough to have a tracker based mortgage under 3.6% where they will still be being overpaid to fund the repayment part
Personally, I think the government should apply a levy come next sale of the property.

You have to wait 13 weeks before you can claim and it will depend on your income as it relates to JSA, iirc if your partner is working full time you may as well not bother trying to get it as you both have to be sponging to get anything.

This is true. Me and my Mrs were told by a guy at the C.A.B. that the then government expected you to survive on £95 a week. This includes shelter, food, clothing, bills, everything. It was this that entitled me to naff all except jobseekers as my Mrs earned min wage in a factory.
BUT if we had kids, a drug and attitude problem, no job between us, a council house - then **** me, we'd have lived like royalty
That's the reason why I will never vote Labour as they let the welfare state happen to keep easy votes.
