I would also make one point that why is it consistently the Asian community that is constantly in the news - is it just some media war on the Asians in general?

Is there really no smoke without fire (in reference to a number of issues rather than just this one)? It does seem there is quite alot of fuel to stoke said fire.

I had heard - heard from a friend of my mothers - that when in India somewhere a lady did not pay attention to the dress code and although not wearing anything too revealing she was treated very badly just by men walking past here.

Jack Straw has a history of putting his foot in his mouth. This is the man who shook hands with Mugabe! The animals caught perpetrating the crimes should be castrated and thrown in prison for a very long time. They are a disgrace to the human race never mind the Asian/Pakistani community. There is always fallout from cases such as this, there is an element of guilty by association and it saddens me to see my 'brothers' (I use this expression ironically) representing my race in such a disgraceful manner. Rest assured it is something I abhor and condemn in equal measure. They are an affront to society and an embarrasment to the Asian community. I think Straw is appealing to the patriarchs (within the Pakistani communities of young heritage men) to use their influence to stop the practices discussed. To be fair a number of leading figures within these communities have come out in acknowledging the problem and indeed condemning their 'sons'. By Straw highlighting the issues action will be taken, if not due to the amorality of raping underage (in the UK) infidels, then because of the adverse publicity and heat that it attracts.
