Look Tony you seem to leap on any piece of press that shows Muslims or Pakistanis in a bad light and the real question is why is that?
So perhaps just for once you can answer that question in simple terms. We are all ears! Do not sidestep this one as to do so could well mean people draw their own conclusions if you see what I mean.

I think there is a case to be answered here, it just need separating from those out to show a given group in a bad light and those who shout racist if anyone mentions another group in a negative way.

You're argument is all straw, The Times simpily provided some statstics which show an over-representation and you attack an argument (the straw man) that all the people from one particular religion must be guilty...seemingly because of this 'agenda' which - you believe - the establisement supposedly has to demonise people of this particular religion.
You are showing signs of paranioa.
If you want you could refute the Times statistics with some research of prosecutions since 1997, but I guess - given that the Times' statistics are most likely correct - it is easier to play the victim and blame 'agendas'?

Not sure if he was insinuating it was as of these 'slutty' girls were asking for it, but it seemed that way.
I agree with AsifScoob with some of his points too an recognise there are a majority that are fine but the media needs to sort it self out and stop being scared - examples include:
Oldham riots - they were 99% Muslim but were labelled as Asians
Lozells riots - 85%> were again Muslim - labelled as Asians
As an Asian and being Sikh, ultimately we all get tarnished with the same brush so it is refreshing for a public figure like Jack Straw saying something.

Personally I think there are problems to be addressed in the Mirpuri community especially in areas such as Blackburn and Bradford. The older generation tend to stick their heads in the sand when it comes to what their sons are upto, and as long as their son is willing to marry his cousin from Pakistan they turn a blind eye.
It will be interesting to see what happens come election time, call me a cynic but I can see him trying to sweet talk the imaam or else he will be out on his ***.

Just listened to an interview on Radio 1 with two men who are members of the Pakistani community, and they basically said that they have seen it happen and know it happens and they are ashamed.
They also said something about Pakistani girls not dressing the way British girls do, abd that they wear short skirts and look 'slutty'.

Trooper, I cannot speak for every Islamic society, as I was born and brought up in the UK. In my experience, they do tend to be Patriarch based societies, but again that is open to debate. I know some very 'strong', patriarch figures who are completely run by their wives, but in the background.

Starting from the top.
I think that is one problem. Some, not all, are born and bred in the UK put don't appear to have an allegiance to the UK.A few years ago when the first Muslim girl joined the Army her parents where shown pictures of her training, at pray etc and where very happy. Until they where shown pictures of her solcialising in "normal" civilian clothes, they went absolutly nuts!
Where I work women are paid the same as men of the same grade. Times are changing here and not ruled by religion or ethnicity.

WHilst I see what you're saying, being asian myself(non-muslim) and living in an area with a fair size asian presence there is a precedent for Muslim men to have this mentality. Reason I know is that the youths are picking up this same habit and I get to hear about their stories and trust me - they are surprising!!

I take your point but what makes you think that I too would not feel 'tarnished' as you say? It's worse for me, for some of the idiots on here all Muslims are the same! For instance, I'm an Anti Semitic, Islamist, maniac, bent on World domination don't you know?
A riot in a predominantly Muslim area, about a race/religion based issue, will involve a majority of Muslims (unfortunately), common sense no?
Now, if everyone was as law abiding as you and I, there would not be any trouble at all would there, but that is not reality though is it?
I don't see why having a different skin colour makes your crime somehow different? Even a race related crime. If a white person carries out a racially motivated crime, it is surely no better or worse than if a non white person carries out the same crime? The punishment should be the same.
What the point of all this is I don't know. I was listening to Andrew Gilligan this morning, who has covered the Times's story on this matter for the Telegraph and he freely admits that of the overall prison population, the proportion of Asian/Muslim convicts for sex related crime is actually below the national average, so they are NOT saying that Muslim/Pakistani men have a higher propensity for sex crimes than white men, it is in fact LOWER.
Don't see too many people commenting about that though.
I think it's great to see you feel that you are representing Sikhs, who have a fine and noble tradition. However, on SN people don't care. When the Sikhs were protesting a couple of years ago and on the streets, you would not have liked all of the comments made on here at the time.

I have said something very similar in the past, explaining the reasons behind this and so on, but not as concisely as this.
Great post and good to see such knowledge around.
These are the sorts of things that should be said, but Jack Straw would cack his pants at the thought of this coming out.
