I downloaded MS Office for the kids the other day, £40, I paid for it, it downloaded and installed itself, doesn't seem that much difference, I wasn't tied in to one company and I didnt have to pay nearly a grand for an entry level spec Laptop, Windows 7 is brilliant, I use Ubuntu on my laptop and thats pretty good for nothing.


Now I am not an Apple hater, they do stuff very well and have an enviable brand and some truly groundbreaking products, but there are now many alternatives, the rest had to play catchup but I doubt they will ever get the jump on the market that the original Iphone had. My Ipod touch I love but it isnt big enough, the Ipad is too big so I am getting an Archos 70 Android tablet which is also very nice to use.

OpenOffice is free and is M$office compatible.

Oh, it also let's you download the new releases for free too.

So there you go, a full suite, free of charge, and always up to date. And it's been around for ages. On Windows.

I got aperture 3 from the app store for £44, a total bargain compared to the boxed version of £170 - total bargain!

This is exactly how digital downloads should be priced, quite the opposite to steam where downloads are often more expensive than the retail box

nice, about time they did this. Have been waiting for this revolution since Steam. If only they did rental as well, that would be sweet.

 

As I'm not a gamer I failed to credit Steam. Steam revolutionised gaming, Apple have taken that initiative and applied it to desktop applications, unfortunately for Steam, they'll be selling games by the bucket load.

 

Yep - this is the way forward. Apps are appearing in there at half their shelf price. I am sure this is for initial periods only - but this is smart and easy.

It does amaze me why so many people seem to hate Apple because they make things easy.

As for web apps - great if you always have a broadband connection to the web. It is just is not mobile enough.

 

Apple certainly have a way of taking stuff that's already been done and making people think it's a revelation. Granted they do make it better than anything else out there, apart from the s**t that is apple TV, but they seem to steal ideas and pass them off as their own.

 

That's the way of the world though Saint. I'm sure some unknown caveman invented the wheel, but it was the bloke who fixed it to a Go-Kart that got the credit and rightly so.

 

I think Apple TV is really a product for the US market - it doesn't seem to make sense in the UK market, yet...

 

They should get the credit for making a good idea useful, but not all the credit. No doubt they will make this new app store easy to use and people will copy so yes it will be good for everyone. I've tried a few Apple products now and I just don't like the "feel" of the user experience. I prefer to wait for Apples refined ideas to be copied and then use that. Not really bothered if they perfected it first.

Apple TV hopefully will get better, but at the min I thought it was a waste of time. Luckily I only borrowed it and didn't buy it.

 

Horses for courses, my friend here in Spain has the new Apple TV and it's been superb, we've watched a ton of movies and TV shows on the Apple TV, streamed from my Laptop, his iMac, his iPad even. I'm buying one once I've gotten over paying £2000 for this Laptop.

Well I was too busy yesterday to update my iMac at home but last night did it, logged onto the app store and within 5 minutes had a working £2.99 app. Lovely bit of seamless purchase, install and use. Nice

Obviously the big manufacturers have not come on-board yet but time will tell. Only problem is some of the big developers have the same thing in common. Huge installs, typically on DVD. Some weighing in at over 4GB !
How that will translate to the App store is anybody's guess but I doubt it will arrive in the near future.

 

£2000???? Who on earth would pay £2000 for a laptop in this day and age?

Times are good for me, I'm on the road for six months minimum a year and I like to buy the best available, £2000 bought me a stunning laptop that will no doubt last six years.

 

Did you go for a MacBook pro? Im about to replace my mac mini with a MacBook as I'd like to be more mobile, just wondering if the extra £400 for the base MacBook pro would be worth it over just an 'ordinary' macbook.

You were completely wrong about HTML5 and about Apple TV being anywhere near a decent solution.

 

I would say a Macbook Pro is far more mobile than a mac mini

 

Openoffice is pretty poor in my experience. £40 for the real thing is a relative bargain. Apparently even my mrs doing a Open Uni course qualifies for that deal.
