Put the car into 5th and have someone put their foot on the brakes while you use a long bar to crack the nut off. I went through to breaker bars getting mine off. If you search for my threads youll see my topic about my timing and the nightmare i found once i had the crank pulley off. Lets just hope you dont discover what i did! Let me know how it goes...

Theres a lot of debate about the right hand cams never lining up etc... But if it is 2 teeth out like you say, then yes i believe you will have a problem. You really need to get the middle cover off though, as there is another gear that needs to be lined up behind it.

Where are you from?

i will take some pictures of the pulleys as they are. yes since i have owned the car everytime you go up to about 3500 - 4000 revs it bogs down and the rev gauge goes and the car misfires. and ive changed all of the sensors pretty much and found out if the timing is out this can cause a similar problem and my timing is out so going to see if it makes a difference getting it inline again.

My timing was out due to a damaged keyway. My car ran and idled fine, hit boost ok but felt really flat like i was towing a caravan... I would deffo try and re-align the timing... Ive just noticed though, you say its a 1994 car but the pics show its on a V plate???

just tried re-aligning the engine and everytime i do its always a tooth out could this be because its not a genuine subaru belt or can it be half a tooth out because its not a genuine one? ive got 2 black subarus the 1994 one which i have problems with isnt insured but my other black one is so to road test it i fitted my other plates for a test drive because i didnt want to insure it just for a test drive so it is definatly an M reg 1994.

Cool. Aparently its common not being able to line up the passenger side cams exactly. As long as youve got it as close as you can and everything else is lined up then take it from there... If this doesnt fix it maybe try a compression test to rule out a damaged valve.

Before I took the pulleys off I took a pic of how far out it was do you want me to post it so you can see and couldn't continue to time it tonight as it got dark and plus I'm going to invest in some timing tools as it was tricky. Do you think I should get a new belt or stick with the dayco one?

Er, I wouldn't admit to that on a public forum

Hopefully getting to sort the issue now...

Post the pics up yeah. Also, if you dont know when the belt was last done i would get a new one. Gates is the best brand to get, and it will make things easier with the refit cause it will have the lines on it.

Yeah i struggled with my timing aswell, i used g-clamps to lock the pulleys and keep the belt on. Also ignore people when they say remove the bottom roller and put it on last, cause when i tried it with that it would pull the cams and pull the timing out. I removed the tensioner and fittted it last. Keep the bottom roller on.

WOW, that is out... at least 2. I assume when you took this pic the other side was spot on? Try and get it to one tooth out. You wont get it exactly, but im sure you can get it better than that. Is the tensioner ok, cause if its jumped a few teeth you need to find out why. The belt looks pretty new as i can still see the timing marks...

yeah when i took the pic the other side and crank were spot on the tensioner looks fine i think the previous owner fitted the belt and just didnt fit it properly i dont think its jumped any teeth as the belt was really tight. im hoping this is where the missfire is

I hope it is mate. Lets just hope it hasnt damaged any valves, cause anymore than 2-3 teeth can cause some damage. Let us know how you get on tommorrow!

As said in a previous post fella, some previous owners can do more harm than good without realising it if they don't have the marbles to do mechanical work.

Hopefully your issues will be down to timing and not shagged electricals

Been a good thread this for anyone with similar issues.

little tip put a breaker bar on the crank bolt then flick the starter motor just a flick not a full crank remember that the crank will go clock wise so make sure breaker bar is in a safe place where it cant spin. crank bolt will crack off easy after that
