In chronological order:

(1) Ford Escort XR3i
First car - I thought this was the business when I was 21 (I know, young and foolish). Despite horrendous plough-on understeer, I managed to keep it accident free, but that didn't help much as it generally rusted away and dropped to bits. Mechanically very reliable though.
(2) Astra GTE 16v
Kept this for 18months and made a 20% profit when it came to resale! Very quick (in its class), super engine. I even thought handling was okay at the time, cornered flat and quickly, could drift it around roundabouts, but I hadn't driven many other cars for comparison, so maybe it was as $hite as everyone told me!
(3) Porsche 944 2.7Lux
The prettiest and best built car I've ever owned. Not the quickest, but beautifully balanced, with great feel and weight to all the controls.
(4) MY99 Impreza Turbo, DBM 4-door
I waited 9 painful months for this car, and only kept it for 10 months before being seduced by a test drive of an Evo 6, which I waited for 5 months for (Ralliart) before cancelling in frustration.
(5) Nissan 200SX Touring
Interim car while I moved house. Great for cruising, oversteer on demand meant great fun when in the mood, but tail-happiness meant it was a bit tiring to drive when you needed to make good progress on twisty wet roads. (Could have been my "teflon" rear tyres as Don Palmer described them
(6) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo6 GSR
Easily the best car I have ever owned for the sheer adrenalin buzz of driving. Awesome acceleration and brakes. Steering is so sharp and direct it's almost unbelievable, no understeer at all (yet, maybe I just haven't driven it hard enough). Those people who talk about active "yawn" control just don't know what they're talking about: for sheer thrills nothing I've ever driven comes close!

Gary.

Cavalier 1.8 L

Cool

MK1 Escort Mexico - so rotten it fell apart. Looked cool though

MK2 XR2 - first colour coded one around. 15" RS alloys, Twin 40DCNFs, fast road head/cam & Janspeed. Those were the days......

Fiat Strada Abarth - twin 45s, head and cam done wwith exhaust. Hairy *****

Vauxhall Chevette HSR 2.6 - geared to do 100mph - VERY hairy *****

MK1 XR2 - koni suspension & Yoko A008Rs. That handled sweetly. In the summer you could hear the tyres sucking tarmac

MK3 Cav SRi 16V - cammed, chipped, Bilstein suspension, HKS induction, head done + exhaust of course. Then swapped engine for a turbo lump.

UK Impreza Turbo, 97 - SS back box and Prodrive 17s

STi V, 99 and a few mods

88 E Red Nissan Micra 1.0l
my first car, was my parents but they gave it to me and 'upgraded' themselves to a Kia Pride! - was written off when fiesta rammed me into back of truck.

92 K Rainbow Blue (<B>not</B> purple ) Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 merit E-drive
First car I purchased, was an ex-demo but in good nick. Had it for 2 years before some idiot pulled across two lanes of oncomming traffic and caused me to t-bone him, thus the corsa was written off.

96 P - Amazon Green Citroen Saxo VTS
1.6 16v, 120bhp, little monster! my first performance car, and I still miss it. Little cracker! had a few issues with it, but on the whole a great car, was a bit too small for me (I'm 6ft 4 and 15 stone) but I loved the seats, handling, just about everything about it. Did not get written off, which was unusual for a car of mine, used it as part exchange for...

98 S Pepper Red Ford Mondeo ST24 Saloon
Ok, so its a mondy, but 2.5l V6 was nice, it di <B>not</B> have the tacky body kit as it was a saloon, did have the 16 inch chrome effect alloys though, which were really nice. Great car, comfortable, fast(ish) lots of fun. Sold it back to Ford dealer around 7 months later, lost huge amount of money on it, and learnt a very, very, very hard lesson about buying cars, we all make some big mistakes and this was one of mine. Why did it go? well I reall wanted a scooby instead of the mondy but could not, at the time, afford one (but really I could have if I'd waited a little while), also, if I wanted a scooby SuzyQ would want a puppy, and a saloon aint going to fit a puppy in the boot, so a five door was needed, which lead to me buying....

94 L Black(beast) Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo Wagon
My current steed, and I must say it ties in first place with the VTS for the best cars i've had. It's modified and mean, and it's called the blackbeast. Love it to bits. OK, so I went from a 98 S to a 94 L and from luxury to plastic heaven, but it's worth it. convinced me that scoobies are the way to go. Even got SuzyQ hooked on scoobies, so much so that she says she'd love one as her car (cool, she has the blackbeast, i'll get a 22b )

So there you go, the not so brief history of my cars.

any questions?

Okay here goes!

1980 J MKII Ford Cortina 1300 - this was the only car I sold for more than I paid for it.

1981 N MKIII Ford Cortina 1600XL

1982 T MKIV Ford Cortina 1600

1982 V OPEL MANTA 1.9SR Berlinetta

1984 T MKII ESCORT RS2000 (Group IV engine)

1984 V OPEL MANTA 1.9SR Berlinetta (No not the same one)

1985 X Ford Escort XR3

1986 L MKI Ford Capri (needs must!!)

1986 V MKII ESCORT RS2000

1987 - 1988 Back to college NO cars!!

1988 T Ford Granada 2.3Ghia (Heh! it was a car!)

Start of a low period of Vauxhalls now!!!

1990 C MKII Cavalier 1.6 (Yes it did burn oil - surprise! surprise!)

Company Car Period:

1991 E MKII Cavalier 1.6 Hatch
1991 G MKIII Cavalier 1.6 Hatch
1993 K Rover 220SLD
1995 M Rover 216
1996 N Rover 220
1996 N Mercedes C180
1998 R Subaru Impreza Turbo (Reddish Blue) - After endlessly mentioning it to my boss, he gave in after 18 months!!!
1999 T Subaru Impreza RB5
Would you believe I changed jobs & had to give back the RB5 after 5 months. Worst still I was going to a job with NO car never mind an Impreza Turbo!!!!!!!

Couple of months in a hire car then as was travelling while relocating bought a Peugeot 306 1.6 Meridian. Had it 11 months and put 21,000 miles on it - 14,000 of that was in four months!!! Just about as bad as when I was a service engineer!!

2000 R Impreza Catalunya & it's mine!!! Still standard however but I've got time to work on this. It was a one owner with only 18.5K miles on it!!

There you have it, Big Den's car history. Some interesting, some sad, some just hanging in there.

Cheers

Big Den

(edited cause I forgot to put the Reg's of the first two Suzies in!)

Being just a youngster:

&lt;98 At college so had to use other family members cars.
'98 R - Saxo VTR: Bought new, 2 years free insurance (worth £1500 to me) sort of swung it. Collected the car on my 21st birthday. Brilliant handling, fuel economy and cheap insurance Ended up needing more performance, as the car spent most of its time sitting at dubiously high speeds.
'00 W - MY00 Scooby, excellant all weather ability (as long as it is not dark) less feedback and attrocious petrol consumption.

Saxo VTR has more steering feel? In all seriousness, get your geometry checked ASAP!

The VTR that we (wife and I) test drove was distinctly unimpressive. The 106 GTI was a completely different car that had *me* wondering...

Good to see that Shoveits are well represented as first cars . Bet no-one else had a "Silouhette" special edition...

Question

chiark, I dont know whether I had a very good VTR, or you drove a bad one, but the performance up to 4,000 rpm was such that it could stay with a 106GTi through the gears if the 106 had a passenger and I did not, the VTR did have shockingly slow acceleration above 90mph, and braking from above 130mph made for a very light back end of the car (not done on UK roads I may add). But the steering although being as light as the Scoobs gave a better idea of what was happenning under tyre (for all 7000 miles that a front set lasted) and overall cornering speed was not that far below the Impreza, possibly because I could drive up to the limit better in it. Having done the WTB last month I mentioned to Don that I was waiting to put it in to the dealers to get a couple of problems sorted, and he said that there was nothing wrong with the car, which does imply that it is not dis-similar to what it should be. The car should make it in shortly to get the geometry set to prodrive settings, but the tyres have worn fairly evenly on both of the sets it has had up until now, so I can't see it being out by much.
But hey, the bbs would be boring if we all shared the same opinions

Hey guys thanks, loads of good info

Nice to see that most of you (like me) have been through your share of Fords, Vauxhalls, Fiats and Rovers (or similar).

Just a question for the people who have had more than their share of Mercs, Porsches etc... HOW DO YOU AFFORD THEM, rich parents, rob banks or just really good jobs at a young age ??

Lets all keep the memories flooding back.

Wanna know what's strange? My older brother owns a '97 NSX and though he has said that I can drive his car anytime, I find myself always coming back to my B4.

Not that the NSX is anything to cough at! Without doubt, his car benefits from the 3.2 liter NA V6 and can outrun my B4. Suspension is awesome and body rigidity is unparalleled; yet, I find that I'm more comfortable in my B4 and find it easier to drive...

Cheers.

P-Scooby Turbo(UK) nearly 2 months and still grinning, only frown when I have to fill her up.(petrol)...

I never crashed any of them except the Golf. An Escort decided to enter the round about befor I was clear and hit my rear arch and bumper (no real visable damage but the Escort was a mess)!!!
