Had this very problem fixed by the dealer on my 2002 WRX. Whilst it has sorted the fuel smell in all temps, I notice that ever since the work has been completed, I hear a 'hissing' like air leaking when I give it the berries. I reckon I'm down on boost too. Is this a problem anyone knows about? My guess is they've not put it back together right, but then I'm not certain what they had to strip off in order to get to the leaking part. Does anyone have any idea what is involved in the remedial works?

They actually remove the whole intake manifold to do this job - yes the intercooler will come off too, but it could be any boost hose under the bonnet thats causing the problem...

Yes I know the manifold has to come of, as I said i did mine last year, and if I remember rightly the only boost pipes that are jubilee clipped are from the ic/bov? I may be wrong as i have slept since . Could also be one of the manifold gaskets that has given up the ghost if they haven't been replaced with new ones.

Sorted this issue now. Quick plug for Subaru in Tunbridge Wells who had not bothered to tighten the jubilee clips between the intercooler and the inlet manifold. They were so loose the clips could be rotated with one finger! Would definitely not advocate the competency of their mechanics. Good job I didn't pay for this! The boost is back yay!

Hi guys just to confirm ive had my recall for the fuel smell which had developed on my 02 bugeye, fixed by subaru free of charge. I collected the car today and i too have noticed the slight hissing noise coming from under the bonnet, i previously hadnt had this so will have a look tomorrow to see if any clips are loose, thanks for the info where to look, i was very pleased with what subaru have done and the service i have recieved, however will be checking tomorrow for any loose clips!

Hope they do a good job and I hope there isnt any suprise charges when they have finished the job.
If they break anything while doing the job they have to replace the parts dont they ??

Just so readers of this thread are aware, not all bugeye models are affected by this issue, and if you've not experienced a smell of fuel on a cold morning (or otherwise) you shouldn't have anything to worry about!
That said scoobywrxwagon, if you've encountered the issue, hope they sort it for you. The had no problems with my car, but the engine bay is pretty tidy tbh

To be fair mate if they bust a load of your parts I'd have expected them to at least offer up part of the money to fix it, as there's not normally a need for a knowledgeable mechanic to get heavy handed!
Hopefully you're having this done because you've encountered the fuel smell issue; bit concerned that a lot of people may see this thread and assume they're entitled to have their fuel pipes replaced (incidentally, I was warned at the time that Subaru UK may also not agree to pay to replace the part if it's not faulty - this is essentially a goodwill gesture).

All done and dusted by K T Green, One of the pipes from the header tank needed replacing which they did and only changed for the part and they replaced a few nuts and bolts too while doing the job free of charge.
Overall the issue with the smell of fuel has gone and the service provided was top notch !!

I've not approached Subaru about it yet.
With the responses in this thread, it doesn't look like the bulletins are being communicated clearly to the dealerships - hence so many saying they'd not heard of the problem, or that they should be fixing it for free!
But i will be speaking to them at some point soon.

Well done Subaru UK My local dealer submitted a claim for the work done on my car about a year ago, Subaru agreed to refund - and i've now got my £300 back

Thats great news Steve PPP.
None of my dealers seem interested in helping nor believe that it should be covered under warranty. Best advice I've had is to pay for it myself 'love' and try to claim it back from Subaru.
I shall try Subaru UK and see if I get any better joy with them. The last couple of days its been 2degrees and the smell is giving me a headache again!

Got a refund within 3 weeks.
With mine, they sent the faulty part to Subaru. No problem.
