Breaking news, Tesco roof collapses.
Tesco! Greedy *******!!!!
I remember when they opened one in Bangor North Wales, it was only open for about 8 months and they decided to knock it down and build an Tesco Extra!! While it was being built they erected a mahoosive marquee in the car park so they could carry on selling!!!! I used to carry Slate Waste from the quarry there for the foundations. £250,000 the foundation cost them alone!!!!!

Yes, but its still more productive to execute the architects
Looking at the Daily Mail photo the column nearest the camera has remained upright, the four behind have all bent at the base. So the head of the columns was subject to a horizontal load for which they were not designed. Snow would be expected to be carried vertically.
My guess is that the snow slid down the roof, then got stopped by something like the gutter or a small parapet or the signs in photo 3, putting a lateral load on the columns which then failed. That is going to take a lot to repair / rebuild.
The column nearest the camera has remained vertical and punched through the roof, so its like a separate failure due to snow load, probably aggravated by the unexpected motion in the structure.

Interesting...I wouldn't be suprised if one of the chs supports (Y) had buckled under the dead load of the snow resulting in the failure of several others.
Architects do like circular hollow sections as they are more pleasing on the eye....not in this case though

Chris.
re-opening to the public saturday morning. As to scaffolding, not been down, will ask around.
it being Tossco and North Lincs, (Martini*) council, there will be "no problem".
*Martini: build owt you like, any place any time.
Apparently open yesterday morning.
They have been alowed to clear their carpark of snow and dump it blocking public footpaths.
See what I mean about a Martini Council?

I was thinking that myself, when i first looked at the pic i thought where has the roof collapsed then
.I thought the curved or sloping feature was part of the design...

looks to me like the corner colum failed and pulled the rest of it down, but i can;t tell properly form the limited pics.
as far as failure, could be any number of reasons, from a physical failure of the structural members, to overloading byt he snow and ice.

The mail had a better pic. One of the pillars had concertinaed, and one had punched through the roof, the others had been pushed over at their bases.
Newer Tesco's have oval shaped pillars, maybe stronger?
And this isn't a single incident: there have been other Tesco roof collapses.

does sound like it became overloaded, weakest part failed and then rest went with.
could be a failure of the colmun due to age (unlikley), loading capacity (snow weight), condition (if water's got at the steel it will rust heavily and reduce its capacity in that rust area, may have been struck by a car and chipped the paint) etc etc.
without being on site to see its just speculation.
They don't build em like they used to, i surveyed a bridge circa 150 yers olda number of years back (anyone in nottingham will prob have driven or walked over this bridge) and the top 30mm of the main support beam top flange was rusted completely and just crumbled, with the flange being 130mm thick it was way over designed so not an issue. modern designs don;t have that level of tolerance.
