Somone else asked why I used a dodgy road: Road should have been gritted but wasnt, (you would only know by driving on the roads leading up to it), other 'safer' local road ment using some known black ice routes. Un avoidable for me, but for approaching traffic, this route would not be used.
If you have been driving down a lot of of snowy / icey roads which had not been gritted, why would you carry on to road in the same condition up a steep hill?

I think you're being a little over sensitive. I wasnt taking the mick of RWD cars, I was just stating what I saw. The same (minus the fish tailing) could quite easily of occured with a Front WD car.

Had an e60 5 series for the last lot of snow and it was useless , had to throw some ballast in the boot to get better traction , not keen driving my cars in the snow doesn't take much to catch a kerb , love it in the van tho

My Impreza is useless and dangerous going down hill. Superb going up hill though, running on standard 17" Bridgstone Potenza 50s.
I might swap for the R Sport 16" alloys though as they are wrapped in 205s which, although are summer tyres as well are a little narrower than the WRX 17"s so should help...I hope.

Those big boxes are great for driving down a bridle path when there is a little rain but are far too heavy in the snow. Bang !!!

So, anyone else keeping there Yokohama Parada's on like me?
I'm going to let some psi out the tyres and away I go. I'm just going to take it easy.
It's more the case of the knobbers behind you or coming towards you you have to worry about.
I was following a M3 this year in the snow at the start of the year getting up peoples ***** etc and go too fast. He was putting the edges of the rears on the snow at the side of the rear to spin the wheels. How I laughed when he lost it going across one lane and ending up backwards into the central barrier. Never hear so many people beep the horns with joy and give him the ****** sign.
Some parts of the country I'll agree your need winter tyres. Other/some areas I am not so sure.

I'm hoping that sensible driving will keep me from ending up bent round a lamp post, 4wd is great for getting going, just doenst make a blind bit of difference when stopping.
Speaking of winter driving, got the back out in the work car park after moving off in first, not quickly but not at a snails pace either, had to check my pants. Probably looked like a right old ******.

Just been out in as a passenger in an Audi R8 with -5 deg on the clock and plenty of watery ice around. That doesnt have snow tires but lovely wide summer rubber. Didnt have any issues despite some rather spirited (oh dear Lord) driving.

my mate visited last xmas in an Evo 8,got to the end of my street and couldnt stop because of ice and no gritters, simple no spiked tyres,no Petter solbreg,no idea,no stop, hit car parked on junction, anyone who thinks snow is really good fun (cos i,ve got dccd is a ****)try driving a 44 ton wagon in snow, never mind a scooby,Asda car park may be ok,but real roads require real drivers, dccd versus wagon equals dead scooby driver, all sounds very clever, but look at all the links on here,i.e,my dccd scooby in the snow(ace,at asda-tesco-morrisons,at 10mph totally out of control),on an actual road, the title usually starts, local news Subaru driver dies, shocking but true.Must be my age,but i think you,ll find i,m right, and a Scoobynet cynic, anyone want to buy a really rare car for £2.Scoobynet,the home of expert drivers and car de-valuers in the uk.Ban me please,i cant stop myself coming on here for the total shi** thats spraffed.Looking forward to the replies.Obviousley this is all in my stupid opinion of 25 years of driving,12 in a scooby, wot do i know ?

I had my WRX-S for 1 week and it snowed up here in Pudsey theres a road called Half Mile lane near us, and i was driving down there, got to the last bit a long straight with a dip at the end, and i thought my this looks shiney so i tapped the brake to slow down DOH, 45 degrees slide then pedulum mode started as i was trying to compensate i eventually stopped but was shaking **** MESEN.
So since then uner carefull, What i did notice with this being my first 4wd car, is the backend seems to kick out more than i thought it would on a 4wd car, maybe thats because the ratios is 58% back 42 front dunno.
but wasnt great feeling

I have never had this issue with them. Last year I ordered then cancelled winter tyre order, no fuss, very quick return of tyres and money to me. This year I bought again and my Nokians are on the car. Again, no hassles. Try Canskill.co.uk they sell winter tyres as do other online places Matty. I do agree with MyTyres delivery though. I did wait nearly 2 weeks before they turned up but that did not bother me.

I used to like driving in the snow until I crashed my Audi last year. It was on summer tires.
I've got bridgestone potenza re070s on my spec d sti, but can't justify £600 - £800 on winter tyres for a few days where I may need them. So tomorrow I'm going to buy a ****ty old nissan micra for £400. The missus can use the micra too and I don't have to worry about parking dings when she takes it to work

Yeah got a set of snow chains off ebay for £20 at the same time I got the Nokians three winters ago before heading off to to the Alps. I've never had to fit them thanks to the tyres!
