Oh dear, I hope this isn't going to develop into another 'Stab the Mapper' thread.
I have never used Thwaites so I don't owe them any particular alleigance, but if you've had a problem with services provided by one of the more respected mappers, I would assume you have sorted it out with him before posting on here mate.
If you have got it sorted then it's over.
If you haven't then it's not a great idea to post empty pot shots on a public forum without the other party having a chance to respond.

Not having a pop at you Jimmy, but comments like that usually develop into a lynch mob, and usually unfairly.

NOT at all mate....
I took my car in for the RR,he told me it was running lean and needed re-mapping,so he booked me in to have a Simtec fitted at just over a grand....I showed another mapper the print out,he told be the RR test was done totally wrong and only had one go on the RR when it says you get 3,also the reason could of been a fuel pump issue, this wasn't even checked ! Plus the fact I had been running cheap fuel in it was another, this question was never asked ! I know diddley squat about **** like this, but as I say another mapper looked at the chart and said he was just offering the most expensive ECU plus didn't even look into the issue of my car running lean !!
But the best of all is "I need a aftermarket ECU fiited"....Ermmm,why?
Because this year car be mapped,ok....BUT...I HAVE ONE FITTED !!!!
Surely he should of known that !! ??
Rant over,I would rarther spend a hundread quid in petrol taking it elsewhere, these are my views and my views only.

Doesn't sound like Mark. I dealt with him quite a few times and he always knows what he's doing.

I'm inclined to say that there was something amiss with your car Jimmy.

I agree chap...
He seemed to know what he was on about...
But the way and others have looked at it is quite simply that instead of looking for the root of the problem he just wanted to bang a Simtec in at over a grand !! The questions were not asked about the fuel or if the fuel pump was 100%,this WOULD be a reason for the lean running of my motor!
Someone has just PM'd me to ask if I paid by card?..(Yes I did) if so request a chargeback (?? ) as it wasn't the service I was offered.

If the fuel pump was duff prior to the simtek being fitted, t would still have shown a problem. Changing the ECU won't fix an underlying pump issue.

A mixture of dyno and road mapping is really the key. In order to do all the part throttle load mapping and low boost area a dyno is key as well as optimising ignition and fuel on full boost.

I usually use my dyno to set the car up fully then road test/tweak to suite if needed. I have to say, 9 times out of 10 when it's pulled off the dyno and driven on the road it's perfect.

Simtek wise I've mapped a lot of the systems both with Simtek creator Steve Simpson and separately and think they are the best OEM style aftermarket ecu on the market. Once mapped, startup and idle should be like the original ECU and drive-ability is improved substantially.

I'm based at Silverstone Autosport near Chester so not too far away from you, but feel free to contact me to ask any questions with no obligation whatsoever.

Hope this helps,

Graham

The point I am making is that, assuming the pump hasn't been changed, you would still be requiring the services of a mapper to sort out the remaining lean fuelling issue as caused by the faulty pump.
It's hard to believe from the facts you have supplied that a mapper of Mark's standing would fit an ECU and leave a problem on the car, because as I say fitting a Simtek won't fix the pump. If he then found the pump to be a problem I would think he would make this quite obvious to you and then remove the Simtek as being unnecessary.
Have you spoken to Mark and told him you think the ECU is unnecessary? I'm sure he would give you a full explanation as to why he thought it necessary if you asked him.
As already said there has to be more to this than just wanting to sell an ECU.

I understand it's done in-house,but not 100% sure,will confirm all on Wednesday...
I would like to point out the following...
After being advised I went to....
A company in Warwick who in my eyes and others blantatly ripped me off.
Then I was told to go to Zen who didn't return my calls,I understand the guy only has just started there but customer service is ****,now I am going to Area 52,so fingers crossed he is ok,he certainly sounds like he does and I have heard good reports on him...But like ANYTHING in life you hear good/bad and indifferent...
