Lots of fun driving through semi flooded areas today in the 110. Not so much fun parking it just now in a tight car park!

John - Forester maybe?

Tows fine, even though its the SWB

Max towing weight is 2800kg

It's a 3.2DiD SWB Equippe (manual). Its not huge being a SWB. Converted to 2 seater to give lots of space for the dogs/kit/whatever. Possibly bigger than it looks (its on 18s in that pic).

Warriors have leather and auto as standard.

They also have a very good 4WD system.

Warrior and Equippe have same system other than manual vs auto trans (if you are suggesting a difference ?)

If not, just ignore me

Ive always liked the Nissan Patrol- proper hard-as-nails 4x4 with tonka toy looks and as seen all over the worlds trouble spots, driven by UN.
Makes a nice change from a Landy as well.

They look pretty serious!

Ours has Grabber TRs - brand new so loads of tread and "snow rated" too whatever that means.

The combination of a very "specalist" traction control system (biased for off road), low range AND proper a locking central difflock plus comedy wheel articulation should mean that it will be pretty much unstoppable off road.

I used to drive them (in Td5) form for an engineer job - we always had a JCB to pull us out if needed - so they got pushed as hard as possible in mad conditions. Lots of fun!

Not an comfy as a Mitsi though. And noisier. And less reliable. But cool - and that's all that counts

John - nice. What model?

Thought about a Mazda CX7, looks good and will get you to most places for the 2 weeks of bad weather we have in the UK.

Otherwise I like the Shogun SWB but not sure you'll need the low range and locking diffs etc

I had a Pajero with the super select 4w drive and its fantastic both on and off road. I used to greenlane mine round north Yorkshire and Derbyshire and you wouldn't believe some off the places these things could get and in reasonable comfort too.

Ive done these steps a few times

3.0R auto saloon. 53 plate, 35000 miles, with every service stamp from Subaru, new tyres. Silver, and about the cleanest 7 year old car I've seen, wheels excepted which are kerbed but not gouged, but the dealer will try to find some 16" to go in the boot so I can fit winter tyres. Much cheaper than the equivalent Audi and hopefully more reliable than those or an X-type, and I don't need more ground clearance, just something that is sure footed in winter and that I can park anywhere and not worry in the snow as much about idiots with no car control driving into me. The wood is grey rather than brown and there is a little rattle in the middle upper dash. The autobox can take its time to kickdown, but when it does it goes as expected from 240 BHP and 1500kg, economy is not good, but it will probably do less than 3000 miles a year. It is more comfortable and refined than the Golf GTI, but the steering and body control are not as good. It grips with full throttle in 1st gear on slimy roads where the GTR can only take half throttle in 3rd, but that is due to less torque and 50:50 torque distribution.

After all that, I bet we get no snow this year

Nice one John - a thoroughly decent motor! Stick some Winter tyres on it and it'll go anywhere you need it to!

There's a reason that farmers and the landed gentry drive Subarus

And there's also a reason wannabe farmers and social climbers try and copy them too! I do know two farmers with stacks of land (and cash) that drive them.

I like it as it is so much cheaper than the equivalent Audi and image free. But I like reliability, a nice drive and good engineering. If an unloved badge, quirky, thirsty and high road tax makes it this affordable I'm happy. If this example turns out to be as good as I think it is I may be keeping it for years as it will be a very useful car to have.

I've been seriously tempted by them as well - still hankering after a turbo version of the facelifted ~ 2006 style Legacy really

For cheap comfortable fun I was going to suggest a Series 2 Disco V8 - cheap as chips - and if you don't have to do too many miles the fuel cost isn't a major problem - total cost over last 3 years for mine was about £8500 all in. The ES version has heated leather, air suspension, awesome HK sound system - I know what I want to be driving when it's snowy or flooding

Anyway - just a little reminder of the snowy fun last year...

Drive safe...

Legacy has much cheapness and is quite impressively refined I thought. Not a Lexus, but to have refinement like a Mondeo of similar age is well beyond what I expected after Imprezas.

Got it today. What huge fun this car is LOL. It seems to have quite vague steering and body roll and a ponderous autobox, but when you push hard through the initial vagueness it suddenly comes alive. Because it doesn't pretend to be a performance car it is all the more hilarious for it.
