Forgot about those pal. I was looking at them afew years ago. The Mk1! Sat in it but couldn't get comfy/good driving position. My Knees kept hitting the steering wheel. Even with it on full height. Am not that tall either.

After that one I gave up. Prob different in the Mk2. Cracking cars tho. I'm not bothered over the Badge. Says VW in my eyes

What about a Leon Cupra R? it's already got all the bits you would add to a VRS fitted & insurance is way lower than an Impreza & can get mid to high 30's mpg on a run.

Edit: meant to say my mates got a black one with a milltek & EVO remap, its putting out around 260bhp & its pretty nippy but still gets the decent economy.

Same guy who owned the Octavia also owned a 325hp Cupra (was his next car). He bought with an aftermarket performance kit added to the standard car, which wasn't just power related - suspention, break, and wheels / tyres. The thing stopped so quickly I thought my face was going to come off, and when he put his foot down (minimal boost setting), I thought it would slide off the other way. Made the octavia feel like a Mondeo.

If you're having a kid get a Mondeo TDCi (115 or 130), estate would be even better for chucking pushchairs, prams, car seats, toys, crap etc etc etc in. Loads of room, comfy, reliable, 50+ mpg, surprisingly nippy for a big car and cheap as chips.

Yes it does seem a bit shellfish but you're bound to feel like that with a baby musseling in. When the young Razorfish is born, you will feel it in the cockles of your heart.

My daughter has a TDCi 115 hatch with 130k miles and it looks and drives like new still. She has a two year old and she can get all the baby stuff in with ease.
Try and get a go in one, I think you would be shocked at how well they pull and you can pick up a decent one for £2500. Go for an 04 or later.

Yup, swapped mine with a knackerd engine for this.

Most reliable car i have ever had, which has been surprising, its decent on fuel for a 2.5 (26mpg round the doors and i did 33.1 on a motorway run)

You could buy two of them for 5k

Insurance last year cost me 340quid fully comp

I'll have a proper look If I have to swap. Fancy the ST version tho. Little more spec on these! Thanks pal.

Cracking chassis, could do with more power, build quality seams on par with my classic scooby to be honest, although the center console did squeek a bit so i pulled it out and used a bit of black sealant on all the parts that rub together, jobs a gooden and it feels solid now

Only thing that has went wrong in 2 years has been the cable tie on a cv boot snapped and 2 bulbs have blown

3: Mazda6 MPS 2.3ltr Turbo. High Miles Tho!
4: Lexus IS200 Sport 2.0ltr. Test drove one before I bought The Scoob.
5: BMW 530 Sport 3.0tlr.
6: Honda Accord Type R 2.2ltr. Again test one before I Bought the Scoob.
7: Corolla T-Sport 1.8 vvti 1.8ltr.
8: Audi A4-A6-A8. With my cash i'm looking at X-wing Fighter Mileage
I just bought a saloon for £5.2k, Legacy 3.0R auto. 35000 miles and mint, 53 plate. But my criteria was a decent AWD system for a winter car. It is refined, comfortable, does 25mpg average which is no problem for a low mileage car. It should be more reliable than the Ford, BMW, Audi, Mazda. It is fun to drive for what it is, even with the body roll, but with the autobox only just dips into the 7s for 0-60. There is a Spec B variant which gets 0-60 in the 6s with a 6 speed manual, has 18" wheels and sports suspension. Apart from the fuel costs they are good cars and at this age/price I'd be wary of the reliability of some of the other options.

A few thoughts on the ones you list, some of which I also considered:

3: Mazda6 MPS 2.3ltr Turbo. High Miles Tho!
This engine cokes up the intake valves with oil deposits. If you could get a low mileage one and fit a catch can, it might be a keeper. Otherwise strongly avoid IMHO. It is also quite heavy. Also if you tune them you have to be gentle with the conrods.

4: Lexus IS200 Sport 2.0ltr. Test drove one before I bought The Scoob.
Gutless. Brilliant in every other respect.

5: BMW 530 Sport 3.0tlr.
Wonderful engine, great handling, acceptable ride quality, worry about clocking, electrical faults, bushes, rust, reliability. Poor condition/age/miles at this budget.

8: Audi A4-A6-A8. With my cash i'm looking at X-wing Fighter Mileage
Unreliable, poor condition/age/miles at this budget. You might find a crazy V8 at a good price, but then you might have to take the engine out to fix something minor.

Thats interesting. I have always liked the Lexus IS with the build quality and reliability that they offer. To me The only thing that has put me off is that they are supposed to be incredibly dull to drive. Was this not the case?

I would imagine that the diesel would offer more "guts". Only 175 bhp but in a diesel producing 300 lb/ft!

I quite like cars that ride properly, are refined and reliable even if they don't excite. I don't like cars that don't that pretend to be sporty but actually just have a bad ride and are noisy, even worse if they are unreliable and have a supposedly premium badge.

Loving all the comments guys. Need as many as I can get Funny now we've told all our friends about the baby. First thing most of them say is... So when's the Impreza going.

Most of them aren't into cars and bought MPV's etc. Just with one Child

I loved the Lexus Is200. Just slow 0.60 and MPG wasn't great for a 2.0ltr

Cracking Spec & Interior. A mates mate has just bought an Is300. 210bhp with Autoshift Box but with Gear change on the Steering Wheel.
