I must admit whenever I'm out on my Madone, I ride around like a skittish squirrel - I'm terrified some jeans wearing hoodie lout's going to come flying past.
I would probably have to hunt him down, kill him and hide the body
Back to the OP - watch your cadence on a road bike, it's too easy to sit in a high gear and mash away. Try dropping a couple of cogs and spin for a bit, this will certainly help with your MTB fitness

The Madone's a great bike. I have a 2010 Trek 2.1. Just an aluminium frame, but it has the same geometry as the Madone - I love the handling! Have lightened it a bit by fitting Pro-lite Braccianos at 1482g for the pair. Now spins very well!
Anyway, I tend to mash the higher gears on the road bike. Any thoughts as to which is quicker up the hills - mashing or spinning? Have never been able to work out which is actually faster!

Suppose your fitness etc comes into it.
A few years ago I went to Provence with a mate to do Mont Ventoux. My lowest gear was 39x29 and my mate had 42 or 39x26.
I could move a bit quicker but sometimes he had to mash because of his gear. I would get lactic acid build up from pedalling too fast!!
Going up a gear was too hard as well!
I think if you condition yourself to spinning, it's better. Better for your knees!

This.
Really, it comes down to protecting your knees. If I drop a gear and spin along I really notice the difference when I get home - my knees thank me for it every time.

Well, I put my Shimano XT spds (M770) on and went for a decent sized ride (22 miles) today. I'm impressed, and after only a few tweaks for saddle its a good fit (although I may add a little bit of length onto the stem later). Managed the ride some 6 mins quicker than I've done on my other bike, and yet there were parts where I thought I was going a fair bit slower than normal. Only thing I'm less keen on is the stiffness of it, or should I say, the state of the roads and cycle paths around here !!!
Anyway, I'm very pleased with the bike, especially at the price I paid, but is it right that Ive been looking at fancy carbon bits for it already ???
