Non-Scooby I know but my very good friend is in the initial stages of fitting a 600bhp Evo 6 engine into a Mark II VW Golf! It's gonna be mental, will take a couple of pics next time I'm at his garage and he has promised me a go

We did consider the Evo engine but love the sound of a scooby too much

Personally I agree

The Evo engine was offered at an unbelievable price to him being in the trade. He has stripped the Evo and had prepared the Golf beforehand. Thus far, he has the engine sitting in the Golf and has sussed the mountings etc but is now waiting for a custom roll cage before he can continue the build

Default Photo update time ;-)

Well, it took me ages tonight to sort out all of our piccies into some sort of resemblance of order!!
4 different large files from all different camera's/phones etc!
Finally got there though and have just started to up load them to imageshack!

I'm going to start from the beginning on this as I intend to have it on 2 sites

The MK1 Fiesta Ghia was transported to the workshop and stripped down to see what we had to play with

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

We got a new front panel for it and had a good look underneath

Because we wasn't sure which path we was going to take (in honesty, at this point in time we had know idea how we were going to do it!!) we ended up doing some very neat repairs on the floor on the only rot we could find!!

Because the damage was around the chassis number, we took care to make sure that wasn't disturbed. We also knew at this time that it would be an open floor with no carpet so it had to look good inside!!

During this time we were on the look out for a donner Imprezza

Good old E-bay came to the rescue! It was on as an auction but no-one bid on it. It had a front end smack that had been repaired but no one seemed interested. So, we made them an offer and they took it. Trouble was, it was all the way up in Scotland and that made for a long journey for collection!!!

We got it up on the ramps to give it a good looking over, only to get some nice surprises..

...Fully adjustable suspension all round and some nice braces for the suspension

So, being well happy with our purchase, we devised a plan! With some measurements taken, we worked out that we could transfer the Imprezza engine bay into the Fiesta!! So, we started to take more measurements and marking things out!

As we knew we would be cutting the engine bay out, we didn't want the strut towers to flex out of position, so we made up a bit of a strut brace

Hello all at Scoobynet.
I have just registered with the site as I am the better looking half of this project. I am known as Scooby, (ironically nothing to do with Subaru's). Interested in hearing your opinions on the build and picking your noses for technical advice from time to time.

Hello Dazzle FieSTi
During this time we were on the look out for a donner Imprezza
Is that like a "Doner Kebab" ??

Right, Saturday morning, so time to continue!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

So, it was time to put it up on the ramps to start dismantling it! Rear suspension/drive train removed first.

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

Then the Engine/gear box and front suspension out!!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

Quick check we've got it all

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

Then time to start looking at where we're going to cut??!!

So, we now had an idea how we were going to do it and this meant it was time to start buying things! We wanted a roll cage for it for 2 reasons. First, we knew we was going to use the car on the track so you can't be too careful! Secondly, we knew we was going to be ctting the Fiesta shell up quite a lot so we wanted to make sure it kept it's shape!!

We decided on a Roll centre cage that required a lot of cutting, moving, welding and hitting with big hammers!! I have to admit, I wasn't present for this exercise but Scooby says he wont be rushing to fit another one!!

So, with the main part of the cage in, it was time to look at the rear suspension

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-08

Do these look familiar?? They're from the back of the Imprezza! The thought process behind this project is for it to look like it was factory produced! So, if we can use part of the Imprezza, we will

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

A little bit of template use and drawing took place and then a trial fit. Bonus was we had a rear strut brace as well, so we could use that to make sure the tower tops were the correct distance apart!!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

Due to the contours of the Imprezza part and the contours of the rear of the Fiesta, we couldn't use the whole tower, so we ended up just using the tops!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

Then we tied in the rear strut towers to the main cage!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

We'll be connecting the 2 strut towers together with a strap bar but will do this after we have finished all our fabrication in the boot area

During this initial part of the build, our donner vehicle changed shape!! We were offered a P1 for silly money! The Engine had gone 'POP', throwing a rod through the side of the block. Also it was very tatty (not well looked after!) and the guy was in desperate need of some money so the deal was done.

Next it was onto the fitment of the Imprezza rear clip to the Fiesta. This required us getting to the underside easily. So, it was time to use my rollover jig I had for my MK2 Escort

Great build looking forward to watching this build, will be awesome.
Any ideas what you are going to do to the arches? Mk2 escort forest arches would look wiked on this fiesta i think!

So, with the main brace for the rear clip cut out of the Imprezza, it was time to fit it to the Fiesta! Believe it or not, during this project we have been outstanded by the way certain things have just fitted! When we came up with the idea and had the Fiesta at the Workshop, someone with an Imprezza came down to do something on it. When he put it up on the ramp, we were able to have a good look at it and take measurements. As you are starting to see, it's amazing how much matches up between the 2 different cars!!!!!

I'm pretty sure I put some piccies of the arches up earlier?
We are going to use proper Ford RS X-pack arches for the Fiesta to keep it looking Factory

With the rear clip in place we needed to look at the boot! We already knew we would have to fit the radiator in the boot as there was no room under the bonnet!!

We also realised how important the rear clip is, so we wanted to really tie it in well to the chassis of the Fiesta! This also required us to cut out the boot area!

So, with the rear clip mount well and truly fitted in the car, it would be time to look at what we were now going to do with the boot!!

So, with a boot floor back in (though not sure if it will stay!) by turning it upside down again we can also finish of the lower part of the clip brace and tidy it all up.

As you may have seen, we made a cradle for the Fiesta so we could move it about but also for the next part of the job, fitting the engine bay and g/box tunnel!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

With a little bit more measuring, and some offering up, we cut some more of the ImpreZa engine bay!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

After lots of 'in & Outs' and 'Left a bit - Right a bit' and cutting bits of here there and everywhere, it slotted in! And to be honest, a lot easier then we expected and once again, fitted up as if it was supposed to be there

With it fitted in and some well placed welds, it was time to fit some front struts and wheels to make sure we had done our calculations properly!!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

Back in it's work slot, was time to trial fit our engine!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

Then trial fit the front panel and find out how little room we have!!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

Then we can't help but fit our new front arches

With the engine bay and tunnel fitted, we looked more at the floors. We wasn't happy with the fit of what was left so we decided to go for new floor pans.

Awesome pics, I often wish I'd gone down the mechanical rather than the electrical engineering route - can't wait to see it finished and on the road.

Strangely, I had a similar seat in my Mk1 festa, but mine was black

With the floor pans in we had to re establish the chassis. We decided this was a good time to make it a little bit more substantial and also to connect in with the ImpreZa points that came of the G/box tunnel.

My partner in crime decided to have a bit of a tidy up and do some of the welding that was required. I wasn't around so we couldn't get on with the next part so this was something he could do on his own!
So the engine bay needed to be fully welded into the car.

He then cleaned up the back end ready for fillets to fit in the corners

I used to be an electromechanical engineer prior to my degree, working ACUs, hydraulics and pneumatics as well as some computer programming (in base and machine code) thrown in for good measure. Did welding as a part of my degree and taught myself paint spraying, but for the last 10 years I've been working comms and IT so my skills have rusted somewhat

Our next job was to start looking at the fitment of the rear axle/diff unit and the brace bars for the nose of the diff. Once again, things fitted in well though we did have to cut the brace bars down a little, they were still in the same plane

Then we needed to look at the tie bars. Again, the Fiesta uses tie bars for it's rear suspension and with a little adjustment we were able to make mounts in just about the same position!

These tie bars were something we quickly made up so we could put it on it's wheels and move it about! We will be looking at them again soon to come up with something different

So, with the rear end finished to a point where we could move it about, what do you do?? Maybe fit your engine?.......

And a quick fit of the front panel just to remind us of our future problems

Hmmm, we seem to have missed out on a few photo opportunities! But these couple are of the roof skin removed! Doesn't look like we have any of the new one being fitted?? It was changed as the ghia originally had a microwave door in it!

Well, unless the piccies turn up later, it doesn't look like we've got any of putting the roof on! Shame, as we did a good job!!

Once we had the roof on, it was time to look at the front wings. Because of the way we had fitted the engine bay, we had some space where the inner wing parts should be, so we had to remove the outer wings in a certain way to allow us to do some modifications to the front. We're having a removeable front panel so need to pick up on the right bits of the wing

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

These last 2 piccies are of the new wings fitted and the front panel all modified to be removable and give us clearance of the engine!!

Due to the change in our filler hole, we had to remove evidence of where it was before hand

While we're not always able to work on the car, we are doing research and asking questions. One of them was to do with the Cooling system. After talking with several companies, we came up with an idea and paid a large sum of money to one of them...

.......and this beauty came from mister postman

Pro Alloy came up with the goods for us and we have to say, what a beautiful piece of workmanship!! We'll definitely use them again

The arch kit we're using requires us to cut the fronts, which is easy enough but the rears need to be tubbed. So we started out by cutting the outer part first.

We decided to roll out the inner arch to mate up with the outer arch as we believe this will keep it nice and stiff! An arch roller was made which didn't work too bad! Well enough to do the job

Another thing that was going on during this time was the good old E-bay searching. One of the next purchases was some seats....

Another thing that was going on was the choice of wheels and brakes. We had a bit of a catch 22 situation as to get the brakes made, they needed to know the wheels we were going to use! And then when we went to buy the wheels, they asked what brakes we were going to fit!!

We didn't want to fit anything bigger than 15" rims, so most of the ImpreZa rims were out of the question. Also, we wanted to keep with the ImpreZa hubs, so this also limited us. We wanted to keep them looking a bit old skool.

So, we purchased our wheels. This then allowed us to send one of with a front strut/hub to get the brakes fitted/made!

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

By dazzles9r at 2010-10-09

As you can see the calipers were from a MGF and were a good deal from the Bay So, a company called BG racing in Birmingham took on the job of fitting them inside our wheels with the biggest discs they could!
