Keep at it matey, that's all I done, I've never had any form of teaching or it's never been a part of my job.
Many think I use photoshop, I've never even seen it let alone been on it. I use "Micrografix". It was a free software thingy on a cheap old scanner I bought about 10 years ago.
Best advice I can give you would be to buy photoshop or one of the Coral packages (Micrografix was the first of the Coral) and keep at it. Use Youtube Photoshop Tutorials to get you going.
For instance the last pic I posted (woman wrapped in blue ribbon), it's easy to think of an idea but if you just plonk a girlie in front of a Subaru badge then wrap her in ribbon it would look stupid. The ribbon needs to look like it's going around her rather than looking flat.
The lighting on the woman to make it look as if she is there, and not just in the picture.
Colour correction, Toning, Shading etc until it looks right.
Being slightly mad with a twisted imagination & the understanding of light helps !
