Managed to dig out the original SN thread, for anyone interested:
world trade centre hit
Myself, I was sitting in the office at work in north Kent, but saw a lot of the aftermath live on TV as the boss had recently bought a big flat-screen jobbie - it was a pretty small company, with a fairly informal atmosphere. If you'd asked me to point out WTC in a picture of the NY skyline on 10/09/2001, I probably wouldn't have been able to, but that took nothing away from the impression of complete shock it left. The scale of the damage just seemed surreal to begin with.

Just read some of that thread, brought back all sorts of memories. Post #16 "do you think this will start a war?", very prophetic!
I watched a number of programmes over the weekend about 9/11, and it never ceases to have exactly the same impact as it did on the day, seeing two planes hit those towers and then collapse. Still seems unreal.
What "worries" me is that Al Qaeda have been quite for a very long time now. That can mean one of two things, we have seriously reduced their ability to work effectively, or that anothe biggy is coming. I hope it's the former.
Geezer

I joined the army straight from school and was just starting my trade training when the planes hit. I had no idea how much this event was going to shape the next 4yrs of my life, i soon found myself in Iraq still with no real concept of what i was doing.
On a side note, i watched planes flying out to bomb Baghdad and it too felt very wrong

I was on holiday in Portugal with my family and sitting on the beach at the time. My dad went into the bar to get some drinks and saw on the news the coverage of the first plane hitting the tower. Came back to tell us something was happening and so we went back home, turned on the news and saw the second plane hit !
After that it was just hours of watching quite numb to see it all unfold.
The result was a few days later when we returned to the UK, the worst delay you could imagine at the airport and the most strenous security I have ever seen. Bit late but as you can imagine the airports were all on a high state of alert.

As history unfolds you will find this was the biggest stunt that American money men set up Al Qaeda name was used to point a finger at the growing Muslim population world wide. When you look at the facts by various people or lack off it is a frightning scenario,my Old man who was in the services allways said the danger to world peace will be American power ego of just a few men !!
I fully understand why Al Qaeda did it, I don't agree with what they did at all, despicable act, but I do understand. But, they did it, not the US.

I was sitting in my shed (in Oz) playing a game of Half-Life:CS - someone shouted out (online) that a plane had crashed into the wtc - a few questions were asked about whether it was a small/medium/large but basically the server emptied fairly quickly as people went offline to watch TV...
I went in and spent the rest of the night watching the news - I remember it vividly.

I was in the office, we had no Internet connection on our pc's at the time. One of the consultants was listening to the radio & told us, we were working with a load of yanks & they were very worried. Non of it seemed real at the time, I also thought it was a light aircraft that had crashed.

Other than making fatuous comments on SN I was just about to start a sales meeting with some telco but my office was on the Thames and looked directly at Canary Wharf. My eyes were constantly drawn to it and the sales patter was doing my head in (don't think their heart was in it either) so I sent them away and spent the rest of the day catching the news and staring out the window...

I was at work and on SN of course - I was Fosters then. I first got wind of it with the original SN thread and remember the BBC website, failing under the traffic, going from slow to text based.
iirc, i was moonligh... writing a gps vehicle tracking app for James/Puff at the time.

I was getting my MSc dissertation bound actually.
Heard someone mention it and initially though it was a joke - the idea did not sink in - until I saw what was going on through the internet.
Then I saw several cars full of Pakistanis cruising around honking their horns, fist pumping, generally celebrating.
Very surreal.

Was working on the trading floor in a tall building in the City of London where they have CNN on all the time. Was watching the aftermath of the first one when the second one flew into the other tower. There was complete silence...
Later we also heard the "missing dutch plane" rumour and were told that anyone could leave if they wanted to

I agree that the US is a danger to world peace, but to advocate that this was set up by the Americans themselves is ridiculous.
I fully understand why Al Qaeda did it, I don't agree with what they did at all, despicable act, but I do understand. But, they did it, not the US.

I was sat in an office in West London. When one of my team said that a plane had hit the world trade centre we thought that it was an awful accident. When someone said that a second plane had hit we thought WTF and as we were the IT dept we started scouring the web for news as pretty much all news sites had gone down.
We finally got a stable feed from one of the SA news sites (benefits of having half of the your team from SA) and watched the news with open mouths as the rest of the office stood behind us.
We've been in and out of this and the aftermath over the years. I know where I was, I hope I don't need to know where I am next time because I hope there is no next time.
