If it was sold at a profit it would be compared to cars that were somewhat a little more exotic.
It is undeniably a very fast car - but for all its virtues and its position (in red) right at the centre of my vision board it somehow does not cross the line between admiring and wanting.

Nissan are in profit again. I've heard the rumour (mainly from you) about the GTR making a loss, is it founded?
I think it doesn't suit you because it is heavy, turbocharged, four wheel drive, cheap, and not a Porsche?
Porsche are (or were when I last looked) the kings of making 5 figure profits on many of their cars. VW were making about 1% margin at one point I think?

Fair do - it is media gossip - but something that has come up on a number of occasions so it likely to have some truth in it. Industry people have been quoting a £110-130k as a gate price. At Porsche/Ferrari profit levels that would be £150-200k car!
I think VWs problem is that it costs them £5m for each Veyron they sell. Another heavy, turbocharged, four wheel drive, auto*, sold cheap car that is not a Porsche that I don't like either
* You missed auto

But we should thank the heavens that firms like Nissan can and do cross subsidise this car (and others) or normal people would never come close to affording these types of car.

Well I wouldn't have one for that much. In fact just £10k more on the GTR sticker and I'd probably have looked harder for an RS6 saloon, I seriously liked the Avant, but wanted a saloon and there weren't many around. That is proper heavy, turbo, autobox, AWD

I noticed some comments from Mizuno that he instructed the test driver that he was not allowed to beat the GT2 RS time as he didn't want customers to compare it with a special/limited model, and wanted customers to believe the time. The changes seem nice, but £70k is stretching things a bit. I won't pay est. £25k to change from an 8000 mile 15 month old example.

I remember when I test drove the GTR and the salesman said the new version was going to be £70k, I thought at the time he was b8lls1tting.
If they are going to charge £70k for it then they should take away some of those ridiculous parts/service costs
Anyway, this should be good for the used values of cars like yours shouldn't it John?

There was some story that Sport Auto were allowed to hook up their timing gear to the 2011 GTR, time was decent I think.
But I can see exactly why they don't want to beat the GT2 RS time as you would never believe it either

You didn't answer the question though John - has anyone else got close to the 'factory' time.
Of course it is controversial and has got a lot of attention. As far as I know no magazine and Porsche themselves can get a GT-R around the 'Ring in anything like the same time.
As I said above - if the Mizuno statement is correct it is very clever!

Chris Harris in the wet (?) couldn't get near the time, but is that surprising? How many laps of the Ring has he done and how skilled is he compared to Toshio Suzuki?
There is video evidence of the 7:26 from 2009 so does it matter who did it?
The recent 7:24 was slightly wet, wonder if it would challenge the GT2 RS time given that the rumours of a 7:20?
Sport Auto have telemetry of a 7:34 lap I believe. http://www.sportauto-online.de/testb...t-2822697.html
Personally I'd rather it did 7:50 or 8:00 and had better tyre wear and more front torque bias for security in the wet, but nevertheless, the times are impressive compared to limited production cars that cost far more that I will never buy.
So for me the GTR is a working man's taste of exotic performance, even more so that the latest quarter mile on a tuned one is now 9.1 with no loss of torque up to 3500 compared to stock.

John - the Harris lap wasn't that fast but was done back to back with the 911 Turbo as that was the point. He was faster in the 911. I thought that there had been a couple of attempts at back to back runs other than Harris.
The point I had heard was that the time is real but with trick tyres as that was the only way Porsche could get close on time.
The GT2 RS has done a 7m 18s but does have over 100bhp per tonne advantage - although less of a trick chassis.
If a GT-R stock car on road tyres can do better then it truly is an almighty car!!

People that are wedded to a particular point of view will selectively interpret the available information. I'm just happy to run a car that transcends previous class boundaries of price and power to weight ratio and also one that usefully gives me a job out of my hobby of ECU hacking.
