Starting again.... with a Hawkeye
235/45/17 AD08 are designed for an optimum rim width of 8", they can be used on a 7.5-9" rim, but wont work as designed as well as on the 8" optimal rim size. http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/de...van_neova_ad08
Stretching tyres is crossply technology, don't do it on a radial.

Shaun I have AD08's on standard Hawkeye 8 inch rims they are 235-45-17.
I haven't done a huge mileage yet but so far having been out in both wet and dry conditions bearing in mind my cars suspension setup is a bit different to the norm, they can only be described as awesome, I have yet to find the limits. Noise is good on a variety of surfaces and they have given the car a confident and positive feel. I haven't experienced any bad tram lining.
You need to take in context my setup when I say this though.

AD08's do not like standing water one bit. Doen 12000 miles on mine now although winter. Ive found their wet limits. Just need the summer to get here so I can find their hot sticky limit.
Choosing a good tyre when you have such a big weight/torque is not simple - but AD08 is the answer.
Agree with John I have been out in standing water conditions and mine is the same, as good as the 070's. But after 12k miles you will be a fair bit down now I suspect.
Mine still have virtually a full tread depth though. So as they wear I would expect them to suffer more.
Very heavy water is a no no I would agree.
My setup helps of course.
cheers

Thanks for the feedback gents.
Cliff,
I certainly wouldn't "expect" bold tyres after 12k miles road use. I've done 8.5k miles on the 070's I have now... they were already "cut" when I had the car and in reality have not worn that much. I suspect there is still 4+mm tread left.
Daz,
How much tread you got left?

A note for you on the wheels Shaun.
They look like the group N wheel fitted with steel inserts for the wheels nuts/studs.
You can't use the stock OEM wheel nuts with these wheels, as the hex on the nut digs into the taper part of the insert, preventing the nut from clamping properly.

March 2013
Nothing terribly exciting has been happening over the past few months with the car. Yet to fit the new wheels (and tyres) but that will happen once the weather picks up a bit. Main mods for this year will be to look at a breather kit, oil cooler and baffled sump. More on this once I get myself in to gear.
I've just come to the end of my inital 50ltrs of Methanol (think I bought this back in September 2012). Car has been 100% fine and I need to re-order again next week. Methanol use is certainly staying for the time being. I'm loving the 465lbft!
I thought I'd get the annual service out of the way sooner rather than later and also get the brake fluid changed..... it's been in for over 2.5yrs.
Currently mileage is around 16500 miles.... it's crazy to think I have only done around 8500 miles in 31 months.
I spoke to David @ APi a few weeks back about booking the car in and although busy he said we could fit me in for the service.... because I'm special!
Now obviously I'm not going to show you how you do an oil change, service and brake fluid change.
But.... I thought I would share a few images from this morning, as you can't beat a few "shots"!
Many thanks to David and the team at APi. It's a pleasure having APi work on my car as always..... they even washed it for me!
That's the annual service completed.
When David said they were "rammed with work" I didn't think he meant the Scoobs were stacked up... literally!

Somebodys knackered old JDM Hawkeye!

Subaru's as far as the eye can see!

They're even parked in the office!

APi are not just able to service and modify your Subaru..... they can even fill it up with the best fuel from their own petrol stations!

The APi "Godfather" taking the "Subaru thing" to it's extreme, sporting his fetching Subaru jacket and t-shirt.

That's enough frivolity.... the next update will (hopefully) be back to business!

Hello chaps,
Just read through the thread. Very interesting and useful. Thank you for taking the time to write up all of the info.
I'm considering a new turbo for my JDM sti 03. Shaun I can see what you would recommend (lm450) but I was wondering if you ever considered a chevron turbo as I believe John felstead is running? I think you have tried his set up and although I know it is different (2.1 etc) if you had any views. John, the other way round would be welcome. I'd happily take a pm as I'm not trying to provoke an argument, just find out a little more.
Road use with occasional track work (just fun not competitive)
Thanks
John

John,
Until I see some (at the very least, say Surrey Rolling Road) dyno data of that turbo on an OEM 2ltr I wouldn't like to comment.
JohnF's car "looks" impressive, but unless you do a back to back on the same car, or many more comparable cars that have the same conversion, it's dangerous to state any conclusive results as the overall expected outcome for any given turbo.
None of us have tried both turbos.

Thank you both, much appreciated. It is very easy to get absorbed with the numbers/graphs/figures, looking for that slight advantage. I wonder what I would notice day to day? Reliability is important (not so important that I will leave the poor car alone) but I'm going to use the car daily so it will need to keep going, it would be gutting to have to send bits back and forth and so on.
Thanks
Thanks
