Dave, what is the ride quality like with 18" wheels on (compared to the standard 17" ones). Do you need a new spine after a long trip, (I have to drive some pretty bumpy / potholed roads every day to work)?

Has any tried the products of MRT Rally... they seem to be the Australian 'Prodrive', though not official.

I have ordered small items before which have been excellent. Worth checking out their website at: www.mrtrally.com.au

About the reported twitchyness...... I had my suspension settings adjusted having had the car for ten days and the rear-end is not anywhere near as way ward, the settings on the car where a little out, the total rear toe in was over 3mm to start off.

There is one chap on the spike thread in drivetrain that says PE have cured the spiking with restrictors, the only one that I know of. He is running a different exhaust to all the others though...

MRT rally - seem to be pretty well thought of here, but you have a potential problem if any of the bits go wrong!

The 18's available so far from Prodrive are a recast version of the UK300/P1 10 spoke OZ giving greater spoke clearance. Same price as the old ones - £275 inc vat per wheel.

There is a market for the STi 17's, there are nearly always a set or two in the for sale forum, price varies but I would guess a set with good tyres would be worth around £600.

Mike does lurk, but I hope he's too busy to lurk at the mo developing the springs and PPP

The RE040's are not too bad, (they are OEM fit on the Evo7), better than their predecessors (RE011 and 010). The biggest drawback is that they have a wide flat tread with radial tread pattern and this exacerbates the torque steer effect of the front diff on the STi.

As for the S03 being superceded, I have used S02, S03, Toyos, P zero rossos and I think the S03 is much maligned, and unfairly so. It is VERY good in the wet - did a Brands track day on them in a monsoon.

I believe the rumours that they will be scrapped are wide of the mark - Bridgestone spend a HUGE amount on research and after all Michael Schumacher seems to be able to win on them. They do have different characteristics to the S02 having a radial tread pattern rather than a diagonal one but that doesn't make them bad, just different. Of the tyres I listed above I would rate them probably equal first with the S02 or marginally behind.

I can only speak for the ride on 18's on a MY01 WRX, but I did not notice any deterioration over 17's.

Changing the OEM tyres does allegedly get rid of some of the twitchyness. Interesting statement from my dealer - they do an alignment check on EVERY new Impreza as part of the PDI process.

Whhhoossshhhhh.....

Just been out in my friends P1... there is no doubt that the performance of his car is fantastic....quality overall just as crappy as my turbo, but the response is fantastic. I've decided that this is what I want (need) from my new Sti. Given its extra weight, even with its 6 speed, what do you think we need to get out of the engine.... will 300 bhp put it on level footing?

Dave T-S ... what are you getting from yours... excuse my lack of knowledge, but have you modified the engine, - i read some thing you where doing by way of decatting, but wasn't sure if you had since reversed this.

If a figure, say 300 bhp is around correct, whats the best way of getting there?

Hope you're working on the BHP figure required to emulate P1 pace..... + how you gonna get my Sti to 300 BHP (if that is indeed the figure)- I have decided to go along with your advice on this matter ==== Does anyone else trust Daves advice??????????????????????

Can't believe my brother is posting here!!

Anyhow I'd better chip in my three penneth worth...I think the standard STI fairly rocks as is but you just can't help having a bit of a tweak now can you!

Tru Tru 300bhp is going to be where its at - its just a case of how you get there.

May I make a suggestion - NOS - yes that old favourite Nitrous Oxide - mega boost on demand, looks real cool in a stainless steel cannister and the boost guage goes ape!

Has anyone tried this yet or is it too stupid? Has Dave T-S any views - would just a mild, kind of laughing gas level of NOS break the 300 barrier without mega stress on the engine or are major mods needed (i guess the warranty goes out the window).

TWITCHINESS. Anyone got a recommended set of settings for the standard STi UK setup please? I'm going to get my geometry checked.

Noticeable how variable responses are, especially on the fuel consumption... 27 mpg strikes me as out of this world - only ever once managed that with my '00 ordinary Turbo driving carefully for economy: yet others are managing mid to high Teens. I'm now into low 20s - exactly what I'd expect, seeing as I got a very consistent 25 with my previous.

Oh, and Insurance - B Good deal from Schofields.....

I had the prodrive settings set on mine as posted on the sidc FAQ.


I had spoken to Graham at TSL and he recommended slightly different settings but I had no place to write them down, and afraid of getting them wrong I stuck with the prodrive settings.

Haved covered now just under 6000mile in Uk STi7.
The cars fuel consumption does vary greatly with the type of fuel.
I have yet to see over 200 mile on a tank of Optimax but never have a problem getting 230-240 on super plus.
I appreciate there may be a difference but for normal driving around central London the performance is good enough.
And at PE using super plus got 315bhp and 280lbft so although Optimax may give better figures its good enough for me.
Car insurance is with Schofields very competitive.

I'll pick mine up at the end of April, and although I don't really need any more info after reading this thread, I do have one question, and it's related more to the new shape models generally than the STi.

Are the new headlights an improvement over the old dim candles? (Yes, I'm a sad b'stard!)

Yes, the STi lamps are a BIG improvement over the standard bugeyes. With Vision Plus bulbs in, I would stick my neck out and say probably as good as Morettes.

Right I'm off to pester Prodrive and try to get some details.

Will of course post any info back.....

I think that PPP is the answer I wanted to hear, as the reassurance of the warranty and I guess the presumption that they know what they are doing was always in the back of my mind.

All of this poses the question of course.....what would PPP and Nos Provide??? !!!

I'm gald to see that I am not the only one desperate to be on P1 level.

I've just spoken to Mike. PPP close to being signed off, but then Subaru UK have to do likewise, put it into production, get it to dealers etc so could still be 4-6 weeks or so minimum.

Nitrus + PPP LOL (hopefully wouldn't be Nitrous + PPP = BANG )

I have emailed Brett, the owner of MRT Rally in Ryde NSW 2112
Australia, (they seem to be the Oz Prodive equivilent) to see if they have any further suggestions / products for P1 crushing. I thought as they have had greater exposure to the Sti engine they may have overcome the spike problems etc. Anyway I have asked him to reply to this forum / thread... so hopefully we may get his view over the next few days or so.... I didn't mention that DAVE T-S was thinking of NOS

Just hypothetically, what would aviation fuel do for the Sccoby?

Went in Mike Wood's STI7 with PPP today.

Feels very quick.

He says a bit quicker than a P1, although in the real world there probably isn't much in it.

I am still very impressed by the handling on the NewAge cars. Driving my P1 and a UK300(decatted) today back to back. If you had asked me to choose which I prefer to drive quickly, it would have been the UK300. Handling feels so much neater.

800 miles to go before my STI is run in. Can't wait.

Sod it. Stayed out of this thread so far.

Seems we have a nice band of ex P1 owners and current P1 owners with STI 7's to verify some misinformation by old shape head in the sand merchants.

Before I got rid of my E46 M3 for the STI 7 I drove back to back with a well run in P1. Speed wise there really seemed to be nothing in it. Handling wise and chasis rigidity wise the STI 7 for me is ahead. My own car is a little twitchy, so I'll get the geometry checked. There also seems to be more lag in this car than any of my other Scoobies. Each mile that goes by I'm smiling more, and I'm sure when its got 18" wheels and the PPP it will be awesome. Still got a crap stereo.

Anyone that buys an STI 7 and thinks they really should of got a P1 can mail me for a good shrink . Russels isnt a P1 its a mutant P1 Shame they never came out of the box like that.

Yes, my P1 has had the bumpsteer mod and geometry and 18" wheels. Still preferred the Uk300 (has 18's too)

Have not driven a bog standard P1 for a long,long time. That would probably feel like three steps backwards.

As Russ said we drove P1's and Bug eyes back to back at Prodive and they are two different animals which is best ?????? STi7 bug eyes won on comfort, low in cab noise, handling in some track areas and with PPP speed IMHO but Looses on road presence and looks.

Which would win a fully tweaked P1 or a Fully tweaked STi7 ??

If you owned two cars -: one a deisel and a P1 because of looks and out and out fun
If you only owned one car -: go for Sti7 but with PPP my second car would be another STi7

From the drivers seat you don't see the bug eyes and yes they are much much better and easier to clean than Morettes

Speaking as one of Dave's "Acquaintance's with a P1", I'd have to say that the extra 150kgs and lack of approx 20bhp/torque is noticeable in an Sti7, unless of course you are used to wafting about in a BMW. I am happy to agree that if Mike W gets his 310-315bhp PPP signed off that the STi will then be a great car - probably at least an equivalent to the P1/old Sti's in performance terms and (already)way ahead in refinement terms.Until then aren't we heading down the old my car's better than your's route? I'm very happy with my decatted,big brakes, geometry done,P1, will probably keep it as I prefer the looks (even though the kitted Sti's look great and are growing on me) and further develop it into a more compromised track car.I may well buy an Sti in 1-2 years time once you lot have done all the beta testing for me( thanks for nothing DTS).

Well I'm not trying to open up a my scooby is better than yours, because truthfully I love em all + I remember when I could only afford my £1500 Peugeot 205 Gti all those years back.... Still my 2nd favourite car ever...

Anyway to continue the thread a little....

Can any STi 01/02 owner tell me whether Subaru have managed to sort out the clutch judder that affliced the Turbo models - I note that they have taken the 'clutch drive plate' out of warrenty on the new models. Anyway has anyone suffered from clutch judder... or is it too early to tell. I think I recall that it didn't affect my turbo until around 8000 miles
