His actions will be recorded onto their surveilance 'tape' too, so they cant deny it to make trouble. This removes all of the potential for it to become a criminal matter; and he can return tomorrow or whenever.

They cant syphon the fuel or try to intimidate him in any way: if they do then call the police.

Well, he's home. I've spoken to Lincs Police and Humberside Police plus the garage, where a very unhelpful, and hard to undersrtand Asian bloke tried to understand me.

It took me nearly 20 minutes to get him to tell me the name and contact details of his manager, whose phone went straight to voice-mail, of course

Since been to the MAIN police station in town here. Guess what? It CLOSES at 2000hrs.

WHY do we pay such huge sums on our council tax for a service which is only available 12 hours out of 24?

Consider yourself lucky, our police station shuts at 1700 and I have not seen a copper around the place for several weeks!

Pathetic, isn't it. You and your Son tried every way possible to do things the right way and met every obstacle you could imagine.
Glad he's home and it's sorted

If you find anyone in, by association you will probably be in jug for the night having had your fingerprints taken as well as your DNA. All done under the Prevention of Terrorism act!

Work for ambulance service and we're always having trouble with BP garages when they reckon the cards don't work. Our crews are told to fill in 'an intention to pay' form and we have to get someone to go back sometime later and pay. BP seem to vary from one garage to the next as some will happily accept payment over the phone provided the crew remain there since they need to input a pin number we give them.
Best one is when a crew get caught up at the end of a long queue at a very slow cashier and get a call to a really urgent job and its more than the cashiers jobs worth to let the crew push in and pay. They leave without paying and it must take the cashier longer filling out paperwork, reporting matter etc even though they know someone will be back to pay.
Perhaps they'd show some common sense if it were their kid that had just been run down. . . .

Spoke to garage manager, who apologised for his young staff who "panicked".

As for the cops, he went this morning, but after waiting in a queue behind two full on muslims trying to speak to the receptionist in Urdu and seven others in the queue behind THEM, he walked out after half an hour and won't go back.

He will pay tomorrow on his way back over there to work again.

Time we got cheques back again, methinks?

Yorkshire Bank do offer the faster payments service as do RBS and HSBC - so funds could have been transferred within two hours, usually less.

Faster payments

Not being funny Jeff, but sometimes you don't really have a choice in whether you go back or not. Luckily in this instance he may not need to as the manager seemed to solve ths situation

^^^^^^^^

I can confirm that you can indeed send then. Yorkshire were in fact one of the first banks to sign up to the scheme and the ability to send has been active since day one (almost 2 years now).

Due to fraud prevention measures there is a limit on the amount you can send, go over this and the payment will go via BACS like in the good old days. If you go into the make a payment screen it and fill out the details it will take you to a confirm payment screen and will actually say what way the funds will be sent before you send them.

Not sure how much this would have helped to be honest as the cashier would have had to havebeen able to give you the firms bank account details and been able to log on and checks the funds had been recieved.

I'm not sure my branch sends funds fast. I sent some in May and they took 3 days

Branch is different. Faster Payment Scheme is internet and telephone based.

Oh and like Switch (maestro) or link they will check random payments even it is under the floor limit which makes it go the slower route, especially if you don't use the facilty often.

This is Bilking, and on the whole you have to have made no attempt for payment to be made for the police to get involved i.e. a "drive off". You did try and pay - so there is no major problem really.

If the AP agrees to make note of your contact details, then it becomes a civil matter to be settled at a later date - most often by you coming back with the money!

They can however decline to take your contact details, at which point if you leave there is an offence - however as you have made efforts to leave your contact details then the chances are the police will give you a chance to pay as you already made that decision at the time.

Ringing the police at the time wont help, because although they can ID you they cant speak for the owner of the garage, so if they refuse to take your ID then there is nothing the police can do. Its then up to the garage to report it.

You will find most plod will take a fairly dim view of the garage in a situation like this where the ID is genuine... 99% of people will just drive off without even attempting to make payment rather than come in and try a duff card!

HTH.

There must be loads of innocent peeps who nip out to get some fuel and when they go to pay realise that they have left their credit card in another jacket or somewhere at home. I have nearly done this several times......... dl

My bank said the other day that cheques are perfectly valid.

Sorry about the trouble your lad had with them anyway.
