There is an update coming, but its not going to improve things on the 3GS, performance wise. I tried downgrading to 3.1.3 last night, no dice unfortunately & I wish I'd not bothered in the first place. My phone is as laggy as my old HTC running Win Mobile 6.1

trying to down grade to jon, i have factory restored the handset via itunes but it still comes up with having the version 4 software on it,
what i am doing wrong.
does anyone have the iphone 4 and other than the signal are you having any issues with it, as this has buggered my phone to the a point where i cant use it properly so if the new update is not going to fix the 3gs then its time to get a new handset
jon how do you know it will make no difference to the 3gs?

Try a hard reset. To reset, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Having used OS4 on my 3GS for a couple of weeks now I would say that the update isn't worth doing. I certainly think it trips the phone up a bit and the touch screen seems more hit and miss, pre update I could type pretty much faultlessly, now I'll hit the wrong key (or it'll 'guess' the key incorrectly).
Will a hard reset revert the OS to what it came with then? I presume all your contacts and stuff will go but if you then restore from iTunes won't it put OS4 back on?

You can't downgrade now because apple isn't signing 3.1.3 on it's validation servers. So if you are on ios 4, you are stuck with it, atleast until the jailbreak community come up with a fix to allow downgrade.
I've noticed the typing lag too, it's fecking annoying. I'm almost at the point of jumping ship to an htc desire or samsung galaxy s

My brother has a blackberry, and it's not great tbh. I'm seriously thinking of something like the htc or samsung next time around. Unfortunately, my contract doesn't expire till December so I'm stuck with this pile of poo till then Will never buy another Apple device after this fiasco. Don't care what they say at the press conference.

If you saved your SHSH files before upgrading to 4.0 then you can downgrade, otherwise you are presently, up **** creek without a decent operating system.
I'm deeply disspointed that Apple have fudged this up, as a software tester myself, they obviously skimped on performance & functional testing on the 3G/s & ipods.
I'd be happy to downgrade to 3.1.3 & stay with it till they sort iOS4 out, otherwise I will probably jump ship till they either fix & the iPhone 4

Why not visit an apple store genius bar and chat it through?

DevilDog, because the nearest one that I am aware of to me is nearly 60 miles away, and I simply don't have the time to get there when they are open.
Thanks Jack. I'd be interested to hear what they say. I know of at least 2 other people here at work who are having similar issues.

Yup, plenty of people coming in with slowdown issues on the 3G, all fixed with a hard reset - press and hold the power and home button. A few issues with 3GS, again hard reset and restore.
Tried the grip of death in the Apple store and the O2 store, no effect in the Apple store at all. In the O2 store one phone had less bars than another, I could make that one go down a bar. Don't believe the hype, try for yourself.

Our company releases products that are far more complicated than that which is contained within the iphone, we have a fraction of Apples budget, and yet we still manage to release bug-free software on a regular basis. It's called testing, (something which Apple does not seem to have heard of).
but I do have to pick on the above, no one can guarantee bug free software

Reset the phone via the menu, hard rest with power and home butting (more than once) reset the phone twice via iTunes and still next to noninternet acres amount other things. Finds a wifi connects and shows full signal but freezes and locks up.
Will try the update tomorrow if not the phone is useless to me so will bin it off,
Forget the blackberry by the sounds of it, not a fan of the htc desire so other than a normal handset (soto speak) might have to try the new iPhone 4 if they have fixed the original issues, loved all of my other iPhones the 3G and 3GS until I took the update so might have to try it atleast
On a 14 day return period

In theory true, but as our software runs a good proportion of the banking/financial and warehousing/logistic systems around the world, we have to be pretty damn close. That's why we test stuff (unlike Apple). If we released software in the same state as this update we'd be slaughtered by our support teams

I tested iOS4 for a week before release, it worked great. So does iOS4.1 and on the same hardware as yours, how can this be possible?
Hang on, didn't you break a dozen XBox 360's?

It's strange, I installed the GM of 4.0 on my 3GS a week before release & it worked great, once I installed the proper version, that was apparently the same, it all went bad. Just installed 4.0.1 - still the same laggy rhubarb

Jack are you using a iPhone 4 or a 3GS?
Just wondering how come you appear to be one of the only people on here saying it works fine and as it's the same download for everyone we should all be ok!!
Jon and myself plus many others are having major problems my 3GS shows a full signal on wifi but won't load a page for love nor money, and ends up locking up, timing out out crashing
Jon please don't say 4.1 has made no difference as j was counting on that in the morning, Jon what model have you got.'3GS if I remember right

3Gs working perfectly. I can assure that your symptoms are a massive minority.
How does the phone run before you restore your back up? If you haven't tried, hit the restore button in iTunes, let it do it's stuff then when asked don't apply your back up.

I did the upload of the 4 software on the 3GS,it did upset certain things, like I could not send mms for a while, voice recordings and pictures, all it took was new setting from o2,then all things where fine again.
With this new 4 now I have had no issues what so ever, the download of all my apps ect into the new phone went fine, have not done this new upgrade 4.01 yet, might leave it for a while.

Stevie> I've got a 32gb 3gs - I don't feel like 4.0.1 has made any difference to the performance issues I have been getting.
At the earliest opportunity I will be downgrading to 3.1.3
