Also, what exactly does the coach have to work with.the English competition is very good, but which players make that competition good.Out off the current England squad, most of the players fall into the "Meh, reasonable" category, some are awfull, and even less are spectacular players.
Even then the team has to click.

If it all was down to individual quality bar none ,Holland would have won every World Cup since 1970, but haven't won any,as they never are a team who want to go the extra bit to make up for another players deficits.Germany seems too be the opposite, they always get very far with very mediocre players and some good ones.

Some very surprising other matches (Mexico v France, Germany vs Serbia) are exactly the same.If you find a weak spot in the other side's tactics/team then exploit it, and hope for a win/draw.Easy to do when you are not the favorite,as pressure will work with you, and against the team that IS favorite.

I believe England will progress to the second round, but do not give them much chance after that.
Sorry.
This afternoon sees Holland vs Japan, and everybody says Holland will get an easy win, but If Japan can find a week spot (Note Japan: v Bronckhorst is SLOW)and can hold the back closed I can see an upset here as well.

You might be right Pete, but how can a so called good team produce the sort of performances that they have done on a world stage. The very fact that they are the England team should ginger them up let alone anything else.

There is more to being good than just producing the occasional sparkling performance.

We can only hope that you are right and that they wake their ideas up next time.

You obviously didn't understand what i meant about rugby union players, upbringing and education as well as where you're from plays a part in how you speak. 'you know' and 'know what a mean' is how they speak where they are from.

It does indeed make me laugh but that is how they speak, are you saying they should have elocution lessons to make it better for people to watch after match interviews? If you want to listen to what they say then accept how they speak, you do have a choice. This is even worse than the spelling and grammar police
These players represent England on the world stage, both on and OFF the pitch. They will be asked to give interviews to media from other countries. Therefore I think it should be a prerequisite to have a good standard of literacy and an acceptable standard of spoken English. After all we wouldn't want the world to think we're a nation of illiterate idiots as well as being crap at football.

Nope, I disagree. Those expressions are at best colloquialisms and nothing to do with where you're from.

colloquialisms are a lot to do with where you're from, and dialect is a lot to do woth social class and IMO is what you're getting at. It upsets you that they're either not educated enough to speak as you think they ought to or they're lazy and speaking slang, which again is more often than not down to social class which is my point about rugby union. While there are all types of class of people in both sports both favour heavily in opposite directions.

And if you think that there are some Algerians sat at home right now thinking England are illiterate because of their poor english (or any other country) then you're not as intelligent as you want us to believe. It's a personal gripe of yours and you're entitled to that, but you're coming across as more and more of a pillock and we don't live in an ideal world if you hadn't noticed.

I doubt very much that the Algerians are concerned with British illiteracy.

*We all know already about his £90,000 per week from Manchester United. Now add: £760,000 twice a year for image rights. £1m a year from Nike for advertising. £118,689 every six months from computer game makers EA Sports. £3.55m for twelve books (yes: that's books. Twelve of them). And a piddling £600,000 from Coca Cola for a four year deal. Source
I could not have said it better myself.

There is no passion or pride left in this nations team, it is has been replaced with self-glorification and personal advancement. Any member of the '66 squad would tell you what won them the cup was the love of the game and the opportunity to play at the highest level representing this great nation.

This lot just want to get home as quickly as possible so they can continue counting their fortunes and reading Heat magazine to see how much their leeches (I mean 'WAG's) have been blowing in the high street shops.

All IMO of course.

Ok, I missed the game but going by all your comments it didn't go too well?
Anyway, how did the Charlton brothers do - did they play well?
And that Kevin Keegan fella - does he still play at No 7?

Thing is, they now need 11 players to have the same good day to progress in the competition by winning the next match. I have enjoyed Australia's games more, even though they fail to keep 11 players on the pitch for the 90 minutes.

If England fail to qualify from this group though, I think they should fire the whole sorry bunch of them and recruit some fired up youngsters from the championship who will do justice to the jersey.

(This being written by a welshman!).

Are you serious?

THE WORLD is only interested in winners !
How you speak , where you were educated , what school you went to etc etc is irrelevant in the world of sport .
How many examples do you want ?
Martin Johnson - Need I say more
Bobby Moore - Hardly an Etonian accent , but what a player and we loved him -RIP
Geoff Boycott and Freddie Trueman - Legends from your part of the world.
Ian Botham
David Beckham
Henry Cooper - you won't find many boxing champions with a good standard of literacy and an acceptable standard of spoken English as you say .

All were sports legends that were working class and did'nt need a posh accent to be the best.

I am not sure that anyone expects them to have a posh accent, the ability to string an sentence together would be a bonus and one often sadly lacking.

These guys get media training and plenty of it and yet some still sound like 15 y/o kids speaking out from the stage during school assembly.

These guys are also role models for a lot of kids who do not have male father figures in their lives and public speaking/medai interviews are all part of the very well paid package i am afraid.

They represent the country at all times, not just on the pitch

I think a part of the problem is that some of them are just a little bit thick - and as you point out - you can't polish a turd.
Mind you - you can dress one up in a suit and tie

Aaargh! I'm not saying we need posh accents. Paul (Habgood) has put it quite succintly. Boyks and Trueman were not only talented and entertaining when they were playing but also when they were speaking.

In the final ...... well, I cannot quite see that far yet.
