Sorry it's pronounced barth where I come from.Just one of the many anomalies of the English language. Anyone who says BATH (baff) obviously hasn't got one!

Obviously it depends where you live, it's barth, and parth here in the s wales valleys, (although there is some weird splits within different towns in the valleys.) Aberdare for example say 'twinty' whilst 3 miles further south it's 'twenty'. A lot of people also severely mispronounce welsh names and for example call hirwaun 'irwin' instead of heer-wine. I can deal with all sorts of mispronounciations and spellings, apart for 'brought' for 'bought', it has to be a special kind of feckwit who deliberately does that.

I'm sure they do it deliberately, like it's 'gangsta' or something. It's not like you can include an 'R' in there next to the 'O', they're nowhere near each other.

Have noticed many black people say "arkst" instead of "asked". Why is that?

In everyday use, not everyone remembers the grammar/spelling/useage etc from school, so a wide range is to be expected, but I believe strongly that the media should try to maintain standards of correct English grammar, especially news programmes and as much as possible in programmes with a large kid audience.
Incorrect use of less/fewer is another irritant.
Broadcast standards have plummeted.
Trouble is that the education levels of those presenting/reading has fallen and it seems they do not know or care that they are making mistakes.

I still believe that kids are led by example, so its worth trying to maintain standards for their benefit, even if we can still understand the poor spelling/grammar etc we meet in everyday life. If standards keep dropping, it will make communication less precise and lead to confusion/ misunderstandings.

A northern girl i met at a festival last year had a lot to say about this

The english language is an interesting one.

Not quite the same issue, but the words 'so' and 'do'. They are pronounced so differently from one another, yet there is real reason apart from common knowledge to make the accents differ.

merely an observation, Aitch and haitch when mentioning the northern Irish and Irish, roots from education and religion, there are always exceptionsoro the rules but as bigsinky said, it's a pretty good way to gauge religious persuasion here, examples
haitch: catholic or else southen Irish
aitch: Protestant
aytch: they ain't from about these parts

while we are on knocking pronunciation, when will the English realise words containing th letter R arnt pronounced ah or ai or worse, silent, examples:
he's an ahsole innit?
Aiton senna
moychael schumakah
adopt a good wholesome n. Irish accent and do it right!
the world would be a better place if everyone had Roy walkers twang.
Imagine how much more bearable it would be speaking to your offshore banking call centre, taxi drivers would be a pleasure to chat to and listen while they retell how they ended up driving taxis for a living after a cruel twist of fate denied them their chance to be a test pilot for the eurofighter project etc where before it just sounded like a whiney lahndan geezer.

Do you mean gaol rather than jail? Or are you a yank?

Don't you mean "gaol", not gail (she's the one on Coronation St)

PS: what's wrong with those people who intentionally get "lend" and "borrow" mixed-up? What's clever about getting something like that wrong on purpose?

Its easier to say instead of pronouncing it the exact French way, and it avoids being an americanism.

But to an american, a 50oz steak is broken without a large number of chips, fatty sauces to "compliment" flavours, and donuts.

I'm always amazed by how many people call a "chimney" a "chimley"!

Well, I guess it depends where people are from as to how they'll pronounce that.

I'd say 'aitch' for what it's worth.

That reminds me of the bad old days in N.Ireland
Depending on where you were and depending on how you pronounced 'aitch' depended on whether you got a kicking or not.
