The back story claims that this was a Wetherspoons bar which seemed to have become focal point for EDL meets in various cities although since then Wetherspoons claimed to have quoshed this.

The funny thing is that all those guys yell that they want to preserve english culture which by the looks of it centres around drinking beer, shouting poorly thought out chants, smoking **** and perhaps having kebab

And I bet it is imported lager (not real English beer) and obviously the kebab/curry/chinese they throw up on the way home is not English either...
...or their trainers or sweatshirts or track suits or football shirts.
They certainly did not seem to be presenting a well thought out objection to Sharia law in the UK!

If they are just racist full stop, they are akin to some vegetarians that spout their love of animals and how they won't eat meat, yet wear clothes/shoes/bags etc. made of animal skin. Bit hypocritical.
Not that I agree with the attitude of these groups (as much as I know of), but if you are going to have 'principles' then at least live by them.

To answer your core question - they behave like out and out racists - but there again I am not sure that is all of them, or was the intention of the originators of the group.
PS I am a vegetarian and wear leather shoes (I don't like synthetics) however it would seem I am far happier with the reality of animal slaughter than most people I know who eat meat

Because I think it is healthier so I eat mostly a veggie diet with some fish and meat a few times a year. It is not for ethical grounds.
I wanted to bring up the point as context is everything which is pertinent to your metaphor.

The difference between you and some people I know, is you have a different reason for doing what you do. Friends of mine wouldn't eat meat as they loved the animals too much but were happy to wear animal products. Even more odd is a woman I know who will not eat meat at all, but will buy a sausage roll and pick out the sausage (and similar such weird things).
Yes you are right, context is everything, but I only brought up my odd metaphor in relation to your comment about the EDL which I quoted.
To my mind, while context is very important, so is whether people actually have principles, or they just hate what they want to hate, and like what they want to like. Sometimes you can pick and choose, but like you allude to, it really depends on your true views/reasons.
If you were a veggie because you didn't agree with killing animals for human 'enjoyment' but then wore their skin, I would say you were a hypocrite, as it stands that is not the case. Just the same as if a person is out and out racist, it is hypocritical to enjoy some aspects of other races, while claiming you hate everything about them.
I know what I mean even if nobody else does.

If I'd known you were visiting the area David, I would have put the kettle on and invited you round for a cuppa.
Next time.
