2.1 revving capabilites are better from what i understand. I think budget wise a 2.1 is also a bit more friendly.
Alan, the 2.1 short block, £2150, does it come with the RCM oil pump, a set of head gaskets and ARP heads studs or are they at extra cost and if so, how much more?

The 2.5 feels faster initially, but it isn't. On the road, it has an effortless quality for sure, but most turbos don't suit the engine that well, giving a big slug of power that tails off. If you go the whole hog with a GT35/42 and big valves/flowing/cams they will deliver the excitement, as in 700 bhp plus from one we built!
Most customers can't afford that, and we found that the delivery from the 2.1 is much better. Take a look at the graph in the first post and note how the power holds right up to the end of the rev range, with no sudden drop off. It's hard to get a graph like that from a 2.5 without spending large sums on one.
A guy local to us, serious about his drag racing, ditched his 2.5 and went for one of our 2.1's. He's now in the 10 second area! Answers it all really.

Blimey, you don't want much do you?

RCM pump £199.75 inc vat
Cosworth head gaskets £112.64 inc vat (pair)
ARP studs £199.75 inc vat.
Inevitably there's a bit of carriage as well, due to all that movement around the country...

Well, that's up to the turbo supplier and mapper! it's just better than it would be as a 2 litre. I think the graph at the start has the best we've had so far, if that's any indication.
As the owner of the car that made the graph at the start of the thread, I thought I'd throw in my 2p...
The best advice that I've heard so far this year is Alan saying, just as I was about to pull away from EngineTuner, 'Be sensible on the way home'. The amount of power, and how long it's available for, is incredible! I've never driven a 2.5, so I can't really comment on the difference, but all I can say is that I'm extremely happy with the result!
This is the second time that I've let Alan, Martyn, and the Enginetuner elves, poke around my car, and both times I've left with a big smile!

Plus a 2.1 stroker drive in drive out, and most of a Simtek ECU to map it with.
It all depends where you want to go with it after that.
If you chose to stick around 400 bhp, I'd buy the CDB off you as you don't need one at that level, for example. That would give you more cash to spend on other bits.
already have simtek fitted its being mapped on tuesday next week, following base map on friday last. got hybrid front mount, walbro fuel pump, rcm induction kit with 70mm trumpet and full 2.5 inch decat exhaust running standard td05 16g turbo and a load of chassis mods which are irrelevant i guess.

I didn't mean that to sound derogatory! There is definitely a case for using what you need and not much more. We see a lot of cars plastered in fancy bits they don't require, and of course the money could have been more wisely spent.
There is an expression about "more than a handful's a waste" although, thinking about it, I also harbour "large handful" tendencies!
Complicated world, isn't it?

wouldnt want to get rid of cdb for anything else to be honest as its just extra piece of mind for me to know its there, would i be able to upgrade turbo within the 5k and if so what would i get?? and what sort of power would the car be putting out once mapped to suit the 2.1 and whichever turbo you reccommend.
thanks
steve

Had my 2.1 mapped yesterday by JGM at Surrey RR and had fantastic results. It made 438.bhp and 410lbft at just 1.45bar on a MD321T and it makes 360bhp at just 1bar
Simon said (no pun intended
) that the engine made the power easily and that the turbo pulled strongly as well.
Goes like a b***ard on the road

Thanks again to Alan and the boys at EngineTuner

You don't have quite enough for a proper turbo as well, but you could always go for the 2.1, run it in nicely, and change the turbo at a later date.
Turbo Technics are working on a new one, which sounds like a winner in the up to 400 bhp range. Hopefully, it won't be too long!

OK, you can keep the CDB...

Just to add another few questions into the mix....
Cosworth inlet manifold... your thoughts?? Worth trying to factor into a 2.1 build with relevant turbo (looking for 450ish).
Hard to find any info or hard facts on the cosworth inlet, few bits i have seen, seem to suggest that they dont work that well until your making 600+ bhp. Tho i read that on a US forum, so they have lower octane fuel, talk ****, smell etc etc

Personal opinion, the Cosworth inlet manifold wouldn't make a fantastic difference at 450hp, certainly not worth the expense at that power band
