Hmmm hard topic to embrace really, I said earlier that re-test's are the way forward.

However i had not thought this through and after reading some of the points here, then perhaps not...but the problems are still there. I like the idea of the NI card and ID card tie in (EBR!!).

There does need to be retests, especially for the older drivers. This much would at least focus the population on the problem, the M'way point also very valid it's a very different game and i feel that perhaps only people who have recently passed an advanced test (motorway test if you will, which will also have regular re-tests)should be allowed to use the M'ways.

People will abuse the system, and there out there no doing so now, however the harder you and I can make their lives, the better IMHO and we will of course have to move forward in painstackingly small steps so as to not rock the boat around election times and all .........

At least 7 dead today (m40 - M5 - M4), how many more until the gov. will seriously address the issue ?

I am 35. i have driven all over the world in cars ranging from the **** poor to scoobys/porkers etc.

All I would say is that people need to realise how easy it is to die or to kill someone else in a car. I came very close to being dead about 8 years ago. I took a photograph of my car at the time and keep it in my car. Sometimes I cane the f*ck out of my WRX down roads in Kent/Sussex but I realise I am only a second or two away from death if I do something wrong or something very very unexpected happened.

The roundabout rambling point I am making is that people need to be more aware of their own mortality and what cars can and can not do. Therefore the driving test needs to be broader. Pass your test. then be put in simulator to replicate a high speed car crash. be shown pictures of carnage. Post test driving on Mways and various traffic conditions - especialy defensive driving skills would be good. Surely a few more deaths would be averted.
Then again 17 year olds think they are invincible... I know I did and I was a right **** behind the wheel at that age. Perhaps I might have thought differently with a bit more education.

Best wishes
Steve

hmm - speed kills???

Question.

Would a speed camera have spotted my grandad (RIP) going down a motorway slip road the wrong way? - (caught, went to court, got away with it)

I'd say that's more dangerous than speeding any day of the week.

Question.

Would a speed camera have prevented my Grandad from going round a roundabout the wrong way with my sister in the car with me when I was about 8? (not caught)

I'd say that was more dangerous than speeding too.

Are speed cameras the answer to the epidemic of 'older generation drivers' on the road, SOME of which, don't have a clue what they are doing?

Suggestion - All people over a certain age should be made to drive automatics, so at least they don't have to think about gear changes. - it's a start anyway.

What about fitting those American style angled spikes to motorway slip-roads.These wouldn't harm vehicle tyres going in the correct direction, but would soon put a stop to the Mr Magoo's going the wrong way.
Result would be four shredded tyres and some explaining to the police.

These spikes would save more lives than speed cameras.
