Hi guys, I'm just wondering what the current situation is with all these unfortunate failures, etc. You see, I'm due to picking up an '08 STI PPP hatch (has around 49k on it) this week - how would I find out if it's possibly had a failure and been repaired/corrected, etc?

Scooby get the reg and ask the dealer if the dealer doesn't know, ring IM group with reg and ask. im sure this should be in the Log for the car, but they may not have entered it in.

In theory you should be ok, as long as its been done under warranty and your not planning on jumping 20 buses in it.

It should be cool, you can always ask the super talented Alan Jeffery to pop in some forged Pistons, That's my plan next year, and get her to 450 500.

Just be open with the dealer ask them, if they prove to be ***** shop around.

I've actually just got off the phone from the service department of the dealership that it has all the stamps from. They really quite helpful, well as much as they could be. According to their records it's been spot-on, as fair as 'they' are concerned. It's only ever been in to them for it's normally services, etc. Incidentally, I'd only be it's 3rd owner.

It's coming from a 'general' used car dealership in Chester le Street.

By my own logic (and crossed fingers and toes) ...it has hit 49k (it'll be getting it's 50k service before I collect it, and most of the poor soles on here went pop a good distance before that mileage (and it's PPP'd - not sure when the PPP was done though, be it at original time of sale or after, need to check this), so I'm thinking chances are if it was going to pop, you'd think it would popped by now, no? 50k, 4 years old, it's fairly 'run-in'...

Id PM Alan and ask he can quote you the most relevant prices, id prob say approx 800 to 1500,

I was quoted about 10k to have mine to 450 safely with Cosworth rods pistons etc, some others quoted me 20k.

I think once you start hitting 500, fuel becomes the issue. i wanted to try keep mine as is and the fuel consumption not taking a hit, unless i actually floor it.

I've just spend the best part of today looking over this thread and while I know that you only ever hear the scare stories and not the reliable ones, I find myself looking at opting for the 2.0L Bug versions. I love the look of the Hawkeyes though. I'm getting married in just under a year so I could be potentially looking at a 10 year old STI by the time I've the money together.

I seem to recall that the 2.0l only did 160 to 190 t a tank, which shocked me, and is prob where the scooby got its dire fuel status from.

The 2.5 if looked after like mine, can return 300 if your not heavy footed. something to bare in mind, as i bet you can pick up an 08 for 12k ish

I think the Hawks looks much classier (if an Impreza can be called that). I didnt think the 2.5l hawkeye engines had any problems

Wow, really?! Even on blobeyes? I hadn't realised that it was that much of a difference (assuming the tank sizes are the same on all gens of STI) in terms of range. My commute at present is only 14 miles round trip so in all honesty, MPG doesn't bother me too much but a difference of 110-140 miles might swing that back towards a Hawk and put the savings towards an potential pop in the future.

Didn't earlier classics / JDM cars some had a 10 gallon / 50l fuel tank, other 12 gallon / 60 litre tankj.

1994 wagon classic JDM had 60l tank, got around 240 a tank out of it, either at 220 bhp or 360 bhp!!

The 2.5l 330S now gets 220 - 240 a tank on normal drivingto / from work - dual carriage way and villages, maybe squeeze 27 mpg / 290 miles out of a tank on long motorway runs.... 60l tank.

Hi all - am new on here but read through most of this thread and thought i would post.
I bought a new Sti on an 08 plate - did 115k with no problems whatsoever (std car)
Changed it for a 2011 sti with the 320hp map that came with it and engine let go at 10k - smashed 2 pistons then turbo went and on several occasions its been back for work as it loses power. fingers x'd its been ok last couple of months...........didn't realise just how many had seen engine failures tbh.........cheers.

Could a turbo going cause the pistons to POP ?

Rich was it the normal piston issue you faced or was yours a special incident that caused the issue ?

Hi - All work done under warranty no prob - main issue is the 1litre Justy i get as a loan car! ha ha.
The sti must have spent over 6 weeks at the dealer since purchase.
To be fair i have had 3 prior from new to over 100k each with no problems but this one has been a 'Friday' car for sure............turbo should have been done with engine imo but wasn't so went about 3 weeks after new engine went in.

There was no special situation with the pistons - I just lost power bit by bit till it went in. No warning lights and no breakdown as such.

An interesting point about the Justy. If you buy a new car that spends the first 6 months of its life being fixed under warranty that is a shed load of depreciation while the car is in the hands of Subaru. What would the legal standings be on claiming compensation for that?

There are many people taking legal action with Subaru
Individual claims , remain individual .
In order to prosecute Subaru as a company it would have to be proven their is a design flaw : this as a reality we all know to be true / albeit thin liners , pistons , HG etc etc - this would take testing of donor cars & lots of money & years of court proceeding -

This really is such a shame. I loved my Hawk and really liked the idea of returning to a Hatch WRX but the issues with the STI have now tarnished the brand in my opinion. The hatch was a disappointment compared to previous designs and it appears that they have not only forgotten how to design but also build as well. What Subaru stood for no longer applies it seems.

The sad reality is with Euro 6 regs on the way, I could picture Subaru retiring from the european market. Even Mitsubishi talked about a diesel-hybrid Evo next. The sad fact of the matter is that this could be the last STI and it's going out with a whimper.

Why didnt they just use the SGT engine? A proper engine thats not going to blow up ***** nilly and sneaks under the 225g/km tax bracket as well.
