Same engine, slightly different piston design I think.... The Hawks have a domed piston and the hatches were released with a new flatter design (meant to be quieter with less chance of piston slap)

Is it just hatches with the generic factory maps that have went pop or has there been custom map hatches gone too?

The 2.5l engine has an inherant issues which is one of the reasons why Litcho has stopped with the type 25.
Sorry, I don't know where you're coming from, but the main issue is the weakness of the original pistons.
It's a combination of factors that led to the situation, but the actual engine failures are due to the actual pistons not putting up with it.

What's your personal experience of the Cosworth press car?

Just the generic mapped cars so far (bar one..but that was not the map that caused the failure)

Ive just taken my RB320 to the stealers with a white/blue smoke issue on start up, only 16k on the clock. While talking to the mechanic about all things scoob he mentioned the cossy was eating crankshafts. Make of that what you will

I've had comments from a Subaru approved garage ( not a dealer ) that the crankshafts on the hatch are the next thing to go after the pistons... I think i've only heard of 1 or 2 of the failures being due to crank / bearings?

Oil starvation.... As the land fractures it damages the bores so you end up with quite a rapid comsumption of oil to the point its nearly dry so picks up on a bottom end bearing.

Well my smoke seems to be just a bit of over fueling and i think i may have bought some dodgy v-power as it started after filling up. Engine is as solid as a rock

STI with about 7k worth of goodies.
I only posted here because i had an issue and it uses the 2.5L engine. Turns out mine was just dodgy v-power and engines fine.

No difference, same basic engine as the Hawk 2.5 STI which its based on, & the 2.5 Hatches.

I have just in the last month, forged built a RB320, 06 STI & a 08 STI, & they all share the same OE piston, & they all had at least one piston with ring land issues, although that is not the reason they were in for work, just a forged build to future proof them.
Plus they were in std unmodified form, & serviced as per recomendations.

What do you mean about Litchfield stopping the T 25.
As far as I know , he has plans off sorts for a new model , I am having my 2.5 Cosworth rebuilt , and very simular to his latest T25 spec engine.

If you google Type 25 I am sure that his new web site come up , which you can register on!

Paul.

I forgot to mention, in my last post that my engine is the Cosworth T25 Litcho, 2007 model.
Valve drop , siezed engine , with broken rings, and oval bores.
And the engine damage [ issues] occured while he was at the helm, Ouch!

Not a penny , Out of warrenty du eto mods that have been done over the 3 years, Just a case of bad luck .It was at Iains for a check up for loss of power when boost came on, So in some way lucky it happend when he was driving at a slow speed .

I could have been driving at a greater spead and hold the block? who knows , just bad.

What were the ring land issues, was it the same ring land and or the same piston in all these engines. Was it a compression ring or oil control ring??

This was from a 06 2.5 STI, & is a typical failure, cyl No2, but its random, could be any cyl.

That piston was from a std UK spec 2.5 STI, with 34,000 miles on the clock.

It would rattle and smoke, and yes, it would use oil!
It would likely start out subtle and get worse every day.
