scratch that itch jacko

and i agree with benny - go with 3k in crisp 50's

the bodywork looks fantatsic (and is much more expensive to put right than mechanicals imo)

the big bumper golf GTi is such a classy looking car - classic

That is a lovely example!

Mine was an earlier small bumper GTi - they started to look cack so put big bumpers on which improved it no end - what I never managed to do was sort the wing mirrors - on the early mk2s they were so far back that they were almost in the boot - what were VW thinking when they designed them?!

Must be lots of fun having the mk2 "look" and the VR6 sound?!

Hmm, hit a snag, wife went along initially but is pulling a face, I drive her mad when I change cars and she drives me mad when she dictates and gets a face on, in reality it makes no difference to her, she doesnt drive it, she reckons its been "Messed about with" and therefore will be a money pit.

Last year she bought a Fiat 500, which she now regrets and wants rid off, despite spending a grand on it and me spending every evening and weekend for ages.

She says I have a perfectly good car and why would I want to change it, I dont bloody know, I just do. She is saying how will I pay for it if I havent sold mine, what if I buy it and mine doesnt sell, fair comment but I have always sold every previous car ok.

Its really doing my head in this, ok it isnt really rational, I just want to, I barely drive anywhere but basically she turns it into a "relationship issue" where I am the agressor, its changing a car ffs.

I have had the Saab 2.5 years so I want so kind of idea when I am "allowed" to change it and a list of acceptable alternatives, probably to include Mondeo's, Saabs, Volvos etc.

Single Lads, dont ffs get married, or if you do, get one that will put up with your endearing little car quirk.

did a bit of digging with some of my old vw mates one that has had his mk2 from new!! nutter, and they all say that if your looking for a mk2 to just jump in and drive once in a while then stay away from 20v t conversions most have issues but thats not saying all do! the recomendation was g60 if you ever have the urge to do a track day the power and fun factor are well and truly there and that slightly different sound gets you noticed on the road. vr6 is a truly mental sound coming from a small car good for just getting in and going for a nice sounding epic drive and by no means slow but they are very lafargic unless tunned, but not that great on the track unless you got some realy good suspension,

g60-good p, light well rounded engine good to get in and go for a weekend drive, stand its own on the track, great sound, and an origanal mk2 model.

g-60 bad- p showing there age, minters hard to find, charger servicing every 3000 miles can go more but to keep it tip top,

vr6 good-p mega sound good pull through out the rev range, parts widley avalible for the engine and car, good for windows down long drive just for the sake of a drive!

vr6 bad-p not great on fuel not great at going round the twisty bit unless the money has been spent on the drive train, but even so still a bit weighty at the front not the best track day car, not an origanal model,

thats about as much as i an a few mates can say the only real way to figure out what you want is to find all of em and take them for a good test drive and dont be scared to push them in and out of some bends,

surely the ultimate MK11 Golf -- had to be the Golf Rallye

a German Integrale, complete with AWD and flared arches

Interested why the 20VT would have issues and what they are, surely its just a modern engine in an older car, as long as it has adequate cooling and the electrics are well doen it shouldnt make any difference where it lives, unless they are dodgy in the original car, which isnt my understanding.

Hodgy - pretty damn slow though apart from a very small number that got just over 200bhp - even they aren't very quick.

I expect any 20VT or VR6 mk2 would utterly batter one to pieces.

its not all about speed Mattee, and as a diesel driver yourself I know you agree (but granted this thread is about big engines in small cars)

they just look sooo cool imo

mk2 golf rallye is the ultimate but for a minter your looking over 4500. alot of the people i have known that have had 20v in older cars keep poping coil packs.

Surely that would be common in the donor car as well, I know it was a problem on the TT, would have thought after 10/15 years of that unit being around in one form or another they would have sorted it, or is it because there may be cooling issues being in an engine bay not designed for it.

Missus thinks she has had the last word, determined to do it, but properly, sell mine, buy cheap banger and bide my time until the right one appears, the red one looks good but he may sell it before I am ready, women eh.

Its funny, in my memory my last 8 valve still stands out as being quite brisk, it had the usual bolt ons to provide a heady 116.5 BHP the Saab has 247, it is no way twice as fast, used to have a go at anything with that old Golf, 530d, TT's and a Diablo !

weird -- i have the same memories

my first Golf GTi 8v was sooo quick ---- maybe as you get older things just speed up so cars just seem, in comparison slower

at my age I prob need a GT2 to feel like I am going somewhere

I think its down to noise, power delivery, gearing and a lack of refinement, I suppose they did do 0-60 in 8 to 9 seconds so even by modern standards arent that slow, a Focus ST is two seconds quicker to sixty but is more refined, heavier, better insulated and the additional push in the seat is not that great.

Maybe in something slower but still nippy, if it feels and sounds nice you get chance to savour the experience rather than hanging on for grim death, airliners once rolling accelerate quickly but other than a gentle acceleration feeling it isnt a very engaging experience, like some mega powered barges and why electric cars may struggle to excite unless producing ridiculous G force.
