Priceless
I think your teacher would mark that one sentence as a D- or FAIL
But we already know you're a fail anyway don't we.

Well here goes
Heres my 2ps worth
bought a 52plate bug bout 4 months ago (its my first scoob) well ive put on full 3" decat system / stage 1 clutch / Harvey tdo5-18g / 550's / andy carr map , pump etc.. 340bhp.
Does it go ??? yep like stink
Does it stop???? NO!
Handling ??? Body roll is a joke
Well the point im trying to make is given what i know now I would of bought an STI as I now need coilovers , arb , drop links and Brembos on top of mods already done £££££££££££
Not to mention the lack of forged pistons keeping me awake at night.
My opinion STI a much better base to start from.

i don't like 6 speed i want 5 for my driving and for the roads where i live
if you get a STI you will still need to remap
coil overs, 18'' wheels exhaust ect
and uprate the brakes (standards brembo's not that good)
so to make a good road car you will still need to spend
the point is we mod because we want something different, and we enjoy doing the work
it makes no difference if its a STI or a WRX so long as you like and enjoy it

Well, I've got an 03 WRX and I've been running a mix of E85 + petrol on it (391bhp (arguably on Simon's road dyno, but gives an indication)) and on Monday I had it remapped for straight petrol again and it made mid 370s on the same "road dyno". It's been at or around that level for the past 4 years and has done 20000 miles in that time and has still to miss a beat (touch wood).
Brakewise, you'll find that even the STI needs uprated brakes when on track, and handling-wise I think most STI's that go on track do not have standard suspension either. If you're worried about body roll, fit a rear ARB and see how you get on.
For better brakes, try different pads as they make a massive difference to how the car feels when braking. Having said that, I don't get the "standard wrx brakes are rubbish" brigade, because I used to have standard brakes back when my car was 350 bhp and never had a problem with them. They managed to lock the tyres up from speed - what difference could a "bigger/better" brake kit have done in that scenario?
I'll agree about the gearbox, however! I do wish I had a stronger gearbox, but then again (touch wood again), my WRX box has been fine at the power levels above and I've been up the strip five times and done one track session so far.

Tricky issue this one. I suspect there are very few WRX drivers who haven't looked enviously at a STI on occasions and I know I have. If you're after as much power as you can get or want to track your car, I think it makes little sense to start with a WRX and spend lots of money upgrading it. However, that doesn't mean the WRX doesn't have its place. I had the PPP done at a big discount through my SIDC membership and very rarely wish it had more go, particularly given the constraints of the traffic we must contend with these days. This also means I pay road tax based on the original CO2 figure, which is below the top bands.
In terms of handling, I was never that impressed with the standard car. It had bags of grip, but rolled around in the corners. However, the relatively inexpensive stage 1 pack from Powerstation (arbs, anti-lift and geo) transformed the car and it corners with venom and much less roll now. The difference in how much confidence it instills is incredible!
In terms of braking, decent ferrodo pads and braided hoses give me all the performance I need. I always try to be gentle on the brakes and have never understood the logic of needing bigger brakes when upping power. Sure the next guy may have 500 bhp, but is he really going to be breaking from 170 mph (if that's possible!). Perhaps on track, but on the road this logic seems flawed. I have heard that the 05 WRX has better brakes than earlier models though, so that may help.
In summary, I still think the WRX is a terrific car (esp with a few mods, as per the above) and while I would never argue that it was better than the STI, there's a lot to be said for enjoying what you have. Would I really enjoy driving an STI that much more? For me, I doubt it somehow. Now that I have the WRX, I would rather spend money on drivier training than an STI.

STI much better than WRX?
Im probably goin to go for something like the 04/05 WRX or STI
Bear in mind i have no plans whatsoever to modify.
Im just researching at the moment and trying gain as much info as possible about the various models.
Yes the STi is better in standard form than the WRX, and that's pretty much it. Everything else is is personal preference and semantics tbh. You can build a rocket ship from a metro if you had the bank roll but even second hand, buying off the peg the STi is better value for performance.
STi has to name but a few...
Bigger Turbo, Bigger Intercooler,Better I/C Piping, Bigger Brakes, Bigger Wheels, Bigger Tyres, Bigger ARBs, Better Droplinks, Better Suspension, Aero Package, Less Cats, Better Back Box, Better Steering Wheel, Better Seats
DCCD, Better GearBox, Better Clutch etc etc etc....
Personal preference aside the STi IS the better car

As mentioned in previous posts. i probably look at a 04/05 WRX (With PPP or add it myself at a later date), Although i havent completely ruled out a classic (bugeyes do nothin for me).
What are the more sought after models in the classic range?
Cheers

I would hazard a guess that the overall running costs are less also, insurance, fuel ,servicing.
WRX's are great mate certainly a good place to start but out the box they are no STi

Thanks for that. I think considering my circumstances, the wrx, dare i say the inferior impreza, is more suited as a daily driver and the occasional blast and play. I would hazard a guess that the overall running costs are less also, insurance, fuel ,servicing.

Looking thru an old evo magazine and found a review of the hawk WRX against the hawk STI. The reviewer said that when they had both cars out on a blast the WRX was practically nailed to the STI exhaust. When asked which one they prefered the winner was the WRX.

Sighs, this topic could go on for ever but I feel a bit of underlying snobery going down. Its a bit like STI uk driver look down on WRX drivers. jdm STI look down on uk STI. Spec C look down on jdm STIs and so on. So what we saying unless you have a S204 or Spec C RA-R everybody has bought the wrong car ? because they wish had standard 6pots like the RA-R etc. I bought my MY07 WRX for 1 reason PRICE £14,875 (motorpoint) brand new out the wrapper (bargin) and at the time the STI was £28,000 from the UK stealers and I wanted new in Urban grey no blue seats no big wing no gold wheels. The car is not perfect but I have enjoyed modding it to suit me as I have did with all my cars its done 31k now and never missed a beat. So have I bought the wrong car I dont think so. Enjoy what you do drive
