BMW M5

But much of that mechanical drag comes from weight - like rolling 4 fat tyres with 1.8tonnes on them.
I think we have concluded that it's just p1ss poor on fuel by modern standards but the owner should be able to afford it.
I suspect it's a lot better than say an 80's V12 5.2 Jag ever was!
Does it need super / 98Ron + to get the claimed figures?

This the car the M5 should have been

Skinters I would Imagine so make the claimed power figures it would need high octane fuel. The E36 M3 evo had a sticker on the fuel cap stating 98 ron only.

I was just making the point (a rather technical point) that at steady speeds it is the drag that makes a big difference not so much the actual weight
anyway shame the weather's so ****e, I hope it doesn't spoil your day out

My fuel bill last financial year was about £2700.

I have a caterham7 thingy so I know all about lightweight and superfluous driving aids so do agree with you 100%

I've had mine for about 3 years now, my average mpg is 11.
I don't think they are mega expensive to run as such. In three years I've spent about £1500 on servicing and about £1200 on tyres.
The biggest expense has been fuel. I went into it with eyes open but the fuel bills do still hurt. It is however a 500 BHP 2 tonne machine that will keep up with supercars so thirst is to be expected

yh it will keep up with most super cars let me tell you a story ,one, day my bro was racing a m6 from the lights my bro reved it to 5 and a half thousand revs drop the cluch brrrrrrr there my mums legacy went!! it was three car lenths ahead of the m6 after 4th gear the m6 started caching up but the next set of light came. the guy then parked up and sed "what the f*** is under the bonnet" my bros like stock 280 bhp twin turbo ,the legacys not even worth half the price of the m6 the m6 owner was well gutted.japanese cars rule.so think about what is out there before you go on pay loads of money on a m5

I am sure he was totally gutted.
However as I am sure you know - the M6 does not run in high power mode by default - you need to set it when you get in the car. And I am sure most drivers, a) don't bother and b) don't give a Donkey's nads.

Legacy Turbo - 0-60 - 5.1s
BMW M6 - 0-60 - 4.4s
Legacy Turbo - 0-100 - 14s
BMW M6 - 0-100 - 9.5s
Yep - the BMW was clearly really trying

Its a real shame the new M5 isn't out until sometime mid 2011. I'm gagging for a change of car but would want to buy it a year old which would mean waiting until mid 2012. Thats a long time away. I know my mind is telling me to buy a 7 or 5 series diesel but my heart is telling me the new M5 will be a stonker!
I know these are photo shopped images, but it could be stunning.

I've never driven, much less tried to launch, an M5 or M6. However, I'd be willing to bet that I would be looooooooong past a 280bhp Legacy before the Subaru was in 4th. I don't even need time to get familiar with it, just sit me in it on the line and tell me where the M button is and which paddle changes up. FWIW, I'd probably take the bet for the M5/6 to be past before 3rd gear....but unfamiliarity with the car would be a factor.
The only car I've driven that's in the M6's performance bracket is a 911 Turbo S. Frankly, there is zero comparison between the acceleration of such vehicles and Subaru's with less than 300hp. The 911 would have screamed past my old 310bhp STI-V like it was standing still.
Your brother is pulling your leg mate (or is just plain wrong that the guy was on it).

Video for 1000rwhp
Bottom line. No matter which Evo it is, it will be faster than a 280 leggy. An m3 is significantly slower than it's big brothers.

Double respek!
PS In your original post you said it was about how great the 280bhp Legacy was
PPS It is about the driver when they bother to try
