What's the more desirable classic?
out of the box UK car - you have to go for the Impreza P1 - you'll need around 10k for a decent one though. but you must get a loved one! the signs and paperwork will be there
if your budget is more modest then an RB5 which are around 6k
If you are still struggling on budget a MY99 UK Turbo 2000. One or two owners maximum with a folder of main dealer service stamps and paperwork to back it up. expect around 4.5-6k. If it is all original then more the better.
Unfortunately most seem to be green in colour though
Something like this

happy hunting - if your not 100% on the Impreza take someone who is with you to look at them. Look at lots and you'll soon sort the good 'uns which will be getting rare as the years pass.
Cheers

Thanks for the comments guy. Some backgroud to my question:
I'm an old Ford RS head, perhaps having an early mid-life crisis (just moved house!!). Rather than have a cheap runaround and an expensive project car locked up in the garage I considered merging both of those into what I most love to drive, something fast, handles great, noisy, slightly offensive. So the automatic choice for me was a cossie, however I now rely on using a car for work and having been involved with cossie's for some time I appreciate the potential unreliability of a 20+ year old Ford.
This lead me to look at Imprezas. I'd seen a lot of cheap cars, around the £2-3k figure, which was comparative to a cheap cossie. However, reading some of the comments in this thread it doesn't seem adviseable to go for a car of this value, and possibly don't spend less than twice that even on the base model. If this is the case then I probably won't be getting a scooby as I was only looking at them as an alternative to a cheap cossie (of course you can get expensive ones of those too!). It's to be my daily runabout and right now I don't want to spend more than that (again due to moving house, priorities).
I work 'in the trade', so to speak, so mechanic work and parts come cheap(er), so i'm wondering just how bad a £2k car could end up costing, excluding an engine or transmission rebuild? Are parts that insanely priced?
This isn't a case of me wanting to be told what I want to hear, so please don't, but if it truly is impossible to get a decent UK car for around the £3k mark then let me know. There is an original green UK 00 car (115k miles) in the for sale section but so far the seller has not replied to my enquiry.
Cheers

Hi Mate,
You sound like my position'ish, I have always had Rs Fords,
(I also work for them !) from mexico's to cosworths, loved them all and been a member of the RSOC for as long as I can remmember, but just before cristmas I decided to sell my racing puma and get something more grown up for everyday use that was stil a bit fun and like you started looking at classics for about the 3k mark,
unfortunately as is so often the case as I learned about the various models I decided I wanted an RB5 or a 555sti, blowing my original idea of a late 2000 turbo and my budget out of the water, so I decided to buy a cheap looked after wagon, went to see it and it was a bin, by chance after driving 140 miles I done an iphone search to see what was in the area and cam home with a prodrive bugeye !
Not what I was after at all ! But I'm chuffed with it, it's ugly but was in my original budget but it drives really well has been looked after is much nicer inside and in my other halfs eyes (v important verses aggro level) is newer so therfore less of a shed lol, and I went for a wagon in the end as I actually prefer the look on a bugeye and I'm always moving car bits about as I still own a mexico that I'm restoring and a house I'm restoring/ignoring
Minus it wont hold it's cash as well as a clean classic, it doesn’t look as good, it's not as raw (this being a plus or minus depending on my mood !)
Bottom line the point of my post being don’t ignore the bugs

Cheap, but about 180 miles away from me.
Can we just clear up a few things.....
The version 6 ra limited was built to an order of 2000 cars. It was the version 5 sti ra limited that was built to 1000.
Neither of them are "v" limiteds.
And the wrx Sa wagon was not available as an sti version.
Thanks.

I knew that about SA wagons...I have a thing for estates
surely, the 22b's are trying to be as good as the original version 1 sti's???? after all, they are the original of the breed and everyone knows you cant beat an original!!!!!
totally different animals, the early sti's were only 260 ps to start off with and don't have the nice additions such as dccd. the 22bs have a wider track not just for looks but to make it a more stable grippy ride and the 2.2l closed block gives that bit more tourque so its easier to drive and quicker.
the 22 b is the don of all classics shape full stop thats why you still need 25 grand for a 50000 miles one in good nick massive arches which look great 2 door 2.2 engine stonger gears and so on i would give my right arm for one of these
The "v" was dropped after the version 4 cars. So the version 4 sti ra is a "v-Limited"
The reason behind losing the "v" part of the title was to do with the roman decimal V (ie 5) and the "V-Limited".
It would have been a version "V V-limited" which doesnt work..

So the version 5/6 cars had just the "limited" in there title. Also known as wrc limited just to confuse.
Another thing that was changed between the version 5/6 wrc limited cars was the "555" on the plaque which dissapeared on the version 6 wrc limited and the build no from 1000 to 2000 for the version 6 cars.
The S201 however ugly would have been the quickest out of the box.
The 0-60/0-100 times for the 22b were not as quick as the type r/ra so i had been informed.
But the 22B is the "daddy".....
